The best vacuum cleaner in the world is...

TheWordsmithsApprentice · 23/08/2021 14:29

... not my 15 year old Dyson with bits breaking off of it and holes in the tube. With what, o wise Mumsnetters, should I replace it?

Are Dyson still any good?
Are battery ones now as effective as plug-in vacuums?
We have hard floors plus a couple of rugs/sofa. No pets, just 2 primary aged DC who like Lego.

I absolutely love my shark liftaway. I've had a Henry and a Dyson in the past and they are poor in comparison.

nocoolnamesleft · 24/08/2021 00:13

I've had my Miele for over 12 years. My grandma had it for several years before that.

Eorks · 24/08/2021 00:15

Dyson is shit. And that's before we get into their tax dodging conduct

Indeed. Two reasons why I will never buy a Dyson.
safariboot · 24/08/2021 03:07

I tried one of the Shark Liftaways at s holiday cottage. After I removed god knows how many people's hair from the comb it cleaned well, but the whole thing just felt cheap and plastickey. The lift away connection creaked and wobbled, not nice at all.

SwimmingUnderwater · 24/08/2021 04:27

SEBO

leafygarden42 · 24/08/2021 04:47

I've got a Miele bag one(corded) - cat and dog as we do indeed have a cat and dog... it has lasted for 5 years plus now and the suction is still strong.

This comment below made me laugh - a lot - note to self - try to get more sleep.

Suck, brush and fluff the carpet up 😂 I am aware that sounds a bit filthy!

Thoughtyouwerethecandyman · 24/08/2021 05:21

The Shark liftaway is the worst vacuum I ever owned, I don't understand the love it gets. Great suction but it's so low to the ground it doesn't pick up crumbs on the kitchen lino, it pushes them around like a broom. I have to cut the hair out of the combs every couple of times I use it. It's so heavy my arm hurts after cleaning a couple of rooms. Can't wait for the damn thing to break so I can justify getting a decent vacuum cleaner.

AmberRoseGold · 24/08/2021 05:54

Would not buy Miele cat & dog cordless again. Badly designed (tiny dust collection cylinder, easily blocked, hair gets tangled easily). Bosch athlet cordless much better and half the price. I thought the Miele was an upgrade but regret it.

ShellyShore · 24/08/2021 06:08

Sebo.
In the past I've had Dyson, Shark and Miele and I'd choose Sebo over all of them. It's a reliable heavy duty workhorse that doesn't cause me hassle.

Theoldwoman · 24/08/2021 06:16

I have a Miele Cat and Dog C3, hands down the best vacuum I have ever owned. I love the bags because they don't create dust when emptying. The suction is suberb.

Have had a Henry before and used Dysons. Nothing compares.

I also have a Miele dishwasher, washing machine and stick vac. All brilliant.

Historyfan · 24/08/2021 07:58

Henry all the way-I’ve had 4 (red Henry, hetty, blue Henry and the xtra)
We bought a Henry xtra and for an extra £30 we got an extra head and it’s shite
With the xtra head on its noisy and doesn’t pick up dog hair from our rugs (we don’t have a dog but we do have a few come round)
If you take that away,it’s a bloody good Hoover-it copes well with human hair (I’m a hairdresser) and short dog hair (with the standard head)
If I was going to buy another one,I’d buy a basic one-the xtra just isn’t worth the money

LimitIsUp · 24/08/2021 08:06

My corded Miele cat and dog is very good, but it's a bit heavy

GuyFawkesDay · 24/08/2021 08:12

I do think all cordless ones are a bit crap compared with corded. They don't seem to have enough oomph

Thethingswedoforlove · 24/08/2021 08:32

Sebo sebo sebo. Once you have a sebo you will never choose anything else

Howshouldibehave · 24/08/2021 08:50

Does anyone else struggle to pull their Henry through perfectly spacious doorways? Mine just can’t seem to do what its told and the git topples over rather than comes towards me!!

Bluebellsinparadise · 24/08/2021 08:56

Sebo, but get an upright one.

MissBridgetJones · 24/08/2021 09:20

@TheFairyCaravan

We’ve got a cordless Shark and a Shark Liftaway. They’re both amazing. Much, much better than a Dyson.
Same. Sharks for the win!
hootyowls · 24/08/2021 09:45

Anther vote for the Sebo upright.

Previously had a Dyson, which was useless.

Soozikinzi · 24/08/2021 09:57

Can I throw a honiture robot vacuum/ mop into the mix . We have a black Labrador so I love mine ! You can run it every day it's no trouble at all it returns to the charger by itself. It gets busy while I do other stuff! I didn't realise until I bought one how good they are for getting under everything. You have to make sure there's no trailing wires but that's no bad thing . You can Even set it to run using your phone which I haven't mastered yet !

AzPie · 24/08/2021 10:05

I haven't tried any of the other brands such as dyson/shark/henry etc but I love my upright vax. I've actually got a spare brand new one for when the current one breaks I love it that much. Things I love about it;

The long cord - I can plug it in downstairs in the kitchen and hoover the entire downstairs, the stairs/landing and get about 2 metres into the bedrooms before finally plugging it in upstairs.

The extension hose - The hose on the hoover itself stretches really far, with the additional extension hose I can reach all the way to the top of the stairs (and the landing), although I tend to just pick the whole hoover up and carry it as I do the stairs as it's light enough.

Suction - I've never had a loss of suction(had it for 3 years now), even when the collection cylinder has been full, although granted we have hard floors everywhere except the stairs and a few rugs(we also have 4 hairy animals). When I hoover the bit of carpet on the landing I have to slide the little air vent all the way open or the suction is so extreme I'm worried it's going to rip up the carpet (plus I can't actually push it as it's literally sucked into place).

Here it is on Amazon - Vax hoover

blobby10 · 24/08/2021 10:14

I have a Henry (because my company is connected to the production of those vacuums and it makes work for us if people buy them!) but have just been loaned/given a Miele Cat and Dog which is over 10 years old and has way more suction than my Henry (even on boost).

Had a Dyson 8 years ago (one of the big heavy things) and thought it was rubbish although ExH loved it but then he only vacuumed the bits of the room you could easily push it round rather than getting into the nooks and crannies and cornices and corners and stairs etc etc

TheWordsmithsApprentice · 24/08/2021 10:31

You have to make sure there's no trailing wires but that's no bad thing 🤣🤣 if only! I'm constantly tripping over the things and why we need to have a rug in the first place. That and the Lego

It seems my wrap in the cupboard Dyson is the strongest one they ever made, which would explain why it's so good! It does, however, take up a lot of space in my kitchen cupboard. We wouldn't have anywhere to store a traditional upright vacuum.

Cordless shark, absolutely love it. Have had 2 dysons but not a patch on my shark.

yikesanotherbooboo · 24/08/2021 11:57

We have a SEBO; it's excellent and about 8 years old, dogs and teenagers. Our previous SEBO must be about 16 years old now and is still going strong in our DC's flat. We have a holiday home and I love the Bosch cordless Athlet that we have there . It's about 5 years old and manages brilliantly in a small house with a mix of carpet and hard floors, rugs etc. It's battery is coming to the end of its life so I am in the market to the up to date equivalent. I feel as if I should be looking at a Shark cordless having read this thread.
