The best vacuum cleaner in the world is...

TheWordsmithsApprentice · 23/08/2021 14:29

... not my 15 year old Dyson with bits breaking off of it and holes in the tube. With what, o wise Mumsnetters, should I replace it?

Are Dyson still any good?
Are battery ones now as effective as plug-in vacuums?
We have hard floors plus a couple of rugs/sofa. No pets, just 2 primary aged DC who like Lego.

I had a Dyson and loved it until it finally died. I now have a reconditioned Dyson, and Miele C3 Cat and Dog; neither are satisfactory. I still need to rub cat hair off the carpet before hoovering, and neither of them cope with my children's knee-length hair.

LadyofMisrule · 23/08/2021 20:04

...oh, and I hadn't factored in the cost of Miele bags.

CatchThatCat · 23/08/2021 20:06

I have a dyson cordless and can’t get over how light it is and how much cleaner our house is as I can whip it out with no bother at the slightest thing . It cleans better than our Henry which I find heavy now too and too bulky

For me, it has to be

lightweight
retracting cord
with a shortish hose, or one which can stretch like elastic.

I have not found such a cleaner.

I am stuck with James (Henry's surprisingly heavy little brother), which has a humungous hose I constantly trip over, a cord which has to be manually wound back and which keeps getting stuck around doorways and corners.

It's round. How can anything get stuck on a corner when it's round?

MountainAshley · 23/08/2021 20:20

Shark, Dyson and Henry are useless.

Miele, Gtech K9 and Roomba are great.

lachy · 23/08/2021 20:20

Sebo. I borrowed one when my old vac broke. I made DH go and buy one before I gave it back.

TheWordsmithsApprentice · 23/08/2021 20:27

CatchThatCat which Dyson do you have?

I actually have 2! I have the DC08 which is falling apart, but even with a hole in the tube seems to be more efficient than the DC35 handheld. I tend to use the handheld for every day spot cleaning and the other for a proper vacuum.

I like that it's bag less - easier for the DC to rescue their Lego!

I've heard good things about Miele washing machines, but don't know anyone with a vacuum cleaner.

I buy Miele bags off eBay. The only get changed once every couple of months so they're not a big expense. And I add a cotton pad soaked in lemon essential oil and the house smells lovely.

I do love the variable suction on it, how quiet the Miele is and the fact that on full whack it lifts the carpet clean off the gripper rods, it's that powerful.

chocolateorangeinhaler · 23/08/2021 21:10

I've had them all over the years and I've found the shark to be the best. I've gone from hoovering when I really need to, to hoovering every day. It's got great suction, it's quiet, it moves about easily and easy to clean.
Had a few Dysons. They all loose suction after a while and the price is crazy. I had a miele upright. It was heavy, noisy and blocked easily. The final straw was that the hose split. A new one was over £100 so almost 1/3 the cost of a new one. So was replaced.
I like the bag less ones as I have pets and the filters and the bin on a shark can be washed so they never smell of Hoover.

MadisonAvenue · 23/08/2021 22:02

I have a corded Shark, it’s a Liftaway with anti-hair wrap which works brilliantly. I was having to cut my hair out of my last Dyson on a weekly basis but in 18 months of owning the Shark I haven’t had to do it at all.

Over the course of 25 years I’d had three Dysons plus a crappy DC35 cordless (which we still have but now only use to vacuum the interiors when cleaning the cars) and I’d never go back to them after using a Shark.

ThatSunnyCorner · 23/08/2021 22:39

Sharks are fine if you don't mind a dirt canister the size of a small mug (which is constantly dirty), cleaning the filter (🤮) and lots of unblocking. Give me a bagged vacuum cleaner every time.

bdd2017 · 23/08/2021 22:43

Henry!

princesspeppax · 23/08/2021 22:45

Corded shark! We also have the cordless shark for quick cleans but its nowhere near as powerful as the corded one, i used miele for years but would never go past shark now

WorriedMillie · 23/08/2021 22:49

We’ve got a corded dyson and a cordless shark. The shark can be a bit of a twat, but that’s mostly down to my sucking up hay 🙈
I like that it lights up the floor, to shame me into picking up all the crumbs 😂

DramaAlpaca · 23/08/2021 22:51

Miele CT & Dog C3. Hands down the best one I've ever had.

PieceOfString · 23/08/2021 23:01

Baffled by the love for Henry. He can't suck for shit, I've resorted to a dust pan and brush to make up for his lack before now (despite good maintenance, empty bag etc). That while professional cleaners use him cos he's the best is horse shit in my opinion. I was a professional cleaner for various firms and he was used cos he was cheap. I love my early corded Dyson which is still going strong but came on here to check what people thought cos I will need a new one soon.

Mantlemoose · 23/08/2021 23:02

Miele (cat and dog) - am on my 2nd one, first one lasted 10 years. I had a shark between Mieles and it's awful!

bumbledeedum · 23/08/2021 23:03

Miele 1000%. Corded and bagged. No dicking around cleaning filters everything 3 minutes just to get the bloody things to suck (looking at you dyson). They're grossly unrecommended/known whenever anyone asks about hoovers but they're bloody fantastic.

Vbree · 23/08/2021 23:12

What's best for high pile carpet?

LavenderAskew · 23/08/2021 23:13

@TSSDNCOP

Henry is a cunt and his metal hose thing continuously disconnects, and his wire is a mess, and he weighs a tonne.
This is what I feel about Henry.

Stupid hose falling off could rip me over the edge!! Vacuuming-wise he is very good, not hair issues and does the job required.

I hate him, but the bastard is unbreakable so Im.goung to have to resort to sabotage in order to find an excuse to replace him (with a Miele)

Tulips15 · 23/08/2021 23:15

henry!
Ive had it 10years never let me down, compared to the shark lift away I bought as a treat....useless and in cupboard after less than 6 months!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/08/2021 23:53

Another one for Miele - with bags and corded. We buy the official Miele bags and filters (tried the rip-off ones from the market and they were just rubbish) - only need a new bag every 4-6 months or so, so not that expensive. On full power, it's like an angry Rottweiler with its favourite bone - could easily lift an entire decent-sized rug off the floor.

Whichever one you plump for, though, don't fail in Hoovering 101:

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/08/2021 23:56

Henry only has a face with those big puppy-dog eyes to make you feel too guilty to beat him to death, even when he repeatedly skates over the same bit of dirt without ever troubling himself to suck it up.

thisgardenlife · 23/08/2021 23:56

Shark corded Lift-Away. Brilliant, and we have a long-haired cat.

Darkchocolateandcoffee · 24/08/2021 00:00

I've had/have a Dyson cordless, G Tech, Miele Cat & Dog, and Henry.

Not one is great. I like the little Dyson the best but you can't do a whole house with one.

My cleaner told me to get the Henry as she loves them, but I don't think it's particularly amazing. My Miele was pretty shot - in fact I had three of those, one after the other, and really didn't rate them.

There's a gap in the market for a really good corded hoover that actually works!!
