The best vacuum cleaner in the world is...

... not my 15 year old Dyson with bits breaking off of it and holes in the tube. With what, o wise Mumsnetters, should I replace it?

Are Dyson still any good?
Are battery ones now as effective as plug-in vacuums?
We have hard floors plus a couple of rugs/sofa. No pets, just 2 primary aged DC who like Lego.

Don’t get a Dotson, had mine a year and going to send it back, keeps losing suction.

Just got a Shark today to replace a knackered Hoover Spirit which was shit. Can’t believe the dirt the Shark got out of the (clean looking) carpet - I got the purple one.

Izzy24 · 23/08/2021 16:41

Shark. Had to replace old one as completely forgot to clean the filter for several months (blaming it on long Covid brain fog) and the engine burned out. Suction even better on new one.

TheFairyCaravan · 23/08/2021 16:45

We’ve got a cordless Shark and a Shark Liftaway. They’re both amazing. Much, much better than a Dyson.

user1498572889 · 23/08/2021 17:20

Sebo. I’ve had mine 18 years. I’ve also had lots of different ones as well but always go back to my Sebo when the others breakdown.

Derrymum123 · 23/08/2021 17:22

Bosch athlet animal. Love it.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 23/08/2021 17:23

Sebo for quality and longevity. Others all crap.
@TheVolturi

When people say Hetty /Henry I am always quite surprised! Yes they're reliable but they don't actually clean carpet very well, just suck up bits effectively

What else do you want a hoover to do exactly??

I 💗 Henry. He's fabulous, the only gripe I have is I'd live him to be cordless, but his cord is long and so no real problem.
Suck, brush and fluff the carpet up 😂 I am aware that sounds a bit filthy!

safariboot · 23/08/2021 17:24

Anything without a beater bar, ie Henry, will be fine on hard floors but crap on carpet.

GuyFawkesDay · 23/08/2021 17:26

Corded, bagged Miele.
The Dyson is unused under the stairs

ohwhattodowithmylife · 23/08/2021 17:26

I got a hefty earlier this year and it just is rubbish.
Got a cordless shark a few weeks ago and love it. So impressed with it- wish I had got one ages ago but reviews were mixed

Muminabun · 23/08/2021 17:27

Henry. Long lead, unbreakable, on wheels, massive capacity. No silly hair thing to constantly have to be pampered with a pair of nail scissors.

Badabingbadabum · 23/08/2021 17:27

Miele. Even the cheapest ones are great.

flipflopslap · 23/08/2021 17:46

Henry. Unbelievably good. Just a bit heavy to lug around.

CloudPop · 23/08/2021 17:58

Another vote for Miele

HerRoyalNotness · 23/08/2021 18:03

I just bought a Dyson cordless outsize. Tbh it’s going to be a game changer for me. No sore back and much easier just to get it off the wall and whip around the house. I love the cordless aspect and it’s much more comfortable for me to use. I’ll be more inclined to use it

ItsRainingTacos · 23/08/2021 18:04

Sick to death of bagless vacuums cleaners.

I'm currently loving the 'Charlie' by Henry (it's the blue one and also has a carpet shampooing function 👍). Its got a powerful suction 1200w I think and the bag is huge so it doesn't need emptying at all too frequently. Downside is it's big and heavy but I can live with that.

RunAwayNow · 23/08/2021 18:06

Really disappointed with our Shark after 6 months so we're going for a Miele c3 Complete. The Shark hoovers well enough but the anti hair wrap bar thing is worse than useless and the vacuum can't cope with things like tiny bits of paper. We're constantly taking it to bits. Our cleaner has used lots of different vacuums - she hates Sharks and rates Vax and Miele.

Mine. Smile

Bit embarrassing 😳 and no, I don’t work for Which? Or Good Housekeeping!

I’ve a Miele (cord/bag less), Sebo (cord/bag), Dyson (cordless), Shark (bag less/cordless) and a G-tech K9 and the handheld one (both cordless/bag less).

Don’t rate Dyson -loses power very quickly- although when working it does pick up well.

Shark one is good, although its selling point was the ‘hair anti-wrap’ thing; my dog is obvs too hairy and I have to cut out the hair after every use.

Sebo is goodish -mine is a bit basic (‘inherited’ from in-laws in order to give to a child when they leave home).

Miele is excellent, although a little heavy and awkward, especially on the stairs.

G-tech K9 initially seemed very basic, but it’s amazing and picks up so much more than the others. I bought it in a deal where I got the handheld as well -you’d need that for the stairs.

All of the above are going strong and are used regularly, but I wouldn’t recommend Dyson at all.

Miele and G-Tech K9 would be top of my list.
(Cleaner also prefers the Miele and G-Tech K9.)

And yes, I’ve quite a large under the stairs cupboard 😆

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 23/08/2021 18:44

I have had top of the range miele, dyson and sebo, and keep going back to the sebo, by far the best.

Tlollj · 23/08/2021 18:47

I love my dyson. It’s getting on a bit now but still brings the pile up lovely.
When it finally conks out I’m getting a cordless one.

orangeloo · 23/08/2021 19:11

Shark! Hands down.
