I went swimming yesterday and I think I've broken my watch

Sad It's a series 3 apple watch, you're supposed to be able to wear it for swimming, but afterwards, the screen went a bit funny (like non responsive when I was touching it) and then it went completely flat and won't charge Sad When I press the power button it shows up with a red lightening bolt and charging cable, but nothing happens when I put it on the charger! Is there anything I can do? I love my watch and I'll be devastated if it's knackered Sad

The same happened to me albeit with a fitbit, but still with a specific mode for tracking swimming. I complained to fitbit in their online chat function and after a few back back forth they agreed to send me a brand new one. Worth a message to apple?

Weatherwax · 23/08/2021 09:04

Also u popped it in the airing cupboard and it still worked aftwr a while, but the display was knackered so I could still wear it as a fitness tracker, and just view the stats on the app.

My complaint was based around the fact that it went wrong while doing something it was specifically designed to cope with.

Good luck!

I spoke to Apple and they weren't overly helpful, they just told me to go to a Genius Bar so I've booked to do that tomorrow. I think I'll cry if it's not fixable, it's only just over a year old Sad

I've always been a bit sceptical of the swim function on the Apple watches so have been too scared to wear mine.

Have you worn it swimming before? Or in the shower?

Hopefully they are able to help in store!

Me too! I've never worn it in the shower or anything because I've always been a bit wary of how well it works. I only kept it on yesterday because I realised I was still wearing it after DH locked the locker and walked off with the key Sad I just thought "Oh well I'll just keep it on, it's meant to be waterproof anyway!" How I regret that now Sad

My series 3 died in the same way… worked fine until one swim and then just didn’t. Apple weren’t too helpful.

My 5 went that way too, so I’m now wearing my husbands 4, and I haven’t been swimming since 🙈

I hope you have more luck!

Did you have the water lock on? Did that seem to turn off okay?

JanetandJohn500 · 23/08/2021 19:13

Did you put it in water mode before you got in?

Hellocatshome · 23/08/2021 19:17

Someone (who may have been talking rubbish) told me its not the submersion in water that kills them but the moist air in the swimming pool/changing rooms. Not that that helps at all.

SnitchyBitch · 23/08/2021 19:39

Was going to say the same as JanetandJohn, did you put it in lock mode and then expel the water afterwards?

Stuckforlong · 23/08/2021 19:46

I think it's only for shallow waters for short lengths of time

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 23/08/2021 22:46

Yes I used water lock, it did sound a little crackly when I turned it off though.

I wasn't really even doing swimming! I was mainly just playing with toddler DS in the little pool

I have an Apple Watch 2 that I have had a few years and regularly swim with it without problems. Your watch really should be able to cope with the water. Go in strong when you go to the Genius Bar.

Good luck!

igelkott2021 · 24/08/2021 11:14

Does the watch have a swimming mode? If so, then it should kind of be able to cope with being in water!

And don't take any nonsense from them about warranties - you have the protection of the Consumer Rights Act which says an item should conform with its description (eg ok to use for swimming/in water). Many traders seem to think it doesn't apply to them, or the guarantee outweighs it, but it doesn't, the protection of the Act comes before anything else and a watch of that price should last a few years.

TheChosenTwo · 24/08/2021 12:39

I’ve got the 4 and it works fine in and after swimming, I once forgot to do the crown turning to lock it in the hot tub but it was still okay.
Hope you get it sorted, I’d replace my watch in a heartbeat, it’s so convenient for me now.

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 24/08/2021 19:35

I've been to the Apple store, it's fucked Sad the guy I saw was baffled as to why it failed the way it did. He spent a while fiddling about with it trying to get it to charge. He agreed that it just wasn't responding to the charger at all and said that because it's less than 2 years old, Apple will replace it! Woohoo! He said the system wouldn't let him get it sent directly to my house but he'll talk to the admin team to get them to manually override it so it will hopefully come to my house. It's a 2 hour round trip to the Apple store for me so I'd rather not make that journey just to collect one thing.

Yay congrats! Glad to hear you managed to sort it.

Teenagers2grownups0 · 24/08/2021 23:59

Brilliant news! I got mine replaced when it was 7/8 months old. The screen became less responsive and then it kept randomly trying to dial my emergency numbers!!! There was no issue in getting it replaced though. The replacement is now 5 years old though and still working.
