Queer means leather in French

After flicking through a school Facebook group this afternoon I remembered something vividly that’s actually shocked me the more I think about it.

Our French teacher was seemingly nice but in order to get the class to understand the word ‘Cuir’ for leather she said to ‘remember it sounds like queer, so queer means leather en Francais’ and did a camp hand gesture and little dance! There were a few closeted LGBT students in my class I can’t stop thinking how awful that must have been for them.

This was only the mid 90s. Surely such a thing wouldn’t be tolerated today?

The more I think about my school days there more I think how inappropriate some of the experiences were. So tell me, what was your strangest memory from school?

My friend in my year one class used to twirl and suck the ends of her pigtails. The teacher told her to stop multiple times but she didn't, it was clearly a absent minded habit. One day the teacher pulled her into her lap and grabbed a big pair of scissors and threatened to cut them off and leave her bald. My friend started to cry and beg her not to cut her hair. The teacher finally let her go with a smile and said that if she even saw her touch her pigtails she'd definitely cut them off next time.

In year 7 or 8, I had a very religious RE teacher, who became our sex ed teacher. She said that our virginity was like chewing gum and that nobody wants used chewing gum.
