Hire car excess insurance

I'm due to hire a car tomorrow for 9 days, I sorted it out via phone call and they will drop the car to me.
I forgot to ask what their excess was in the event of anything happening and they're shut now.
I've heard of excess insurance and wondered if anyone knew if this was worth doing?

We’ve taken out the excess cover insurance for hire cars, but fortunately never had to claim.

I take excess insurance when I hire abroad as the excess is usually about €1000. I’d rather pay the £20!

Yes it is worth it and almost certainly far cheaper to get from a specialist provider not the insurance company.

However, you will need to pay the excess when you take the car, so make sure you have a credit card or the money available.
