Did you wear Dr Marten boots with Laura Ashley dresses in the late eighties?

This was a thing where I lived in the North-East in my late teens - long Laura Ashley dresses (the sailor dresses were the most coveted) with Dr Marten boots. We wore them to go clubbing at the smallest, dingiest night club in town, which played things like The Smiths, The Cure, jangly acoustic eighties music and anything considered worthy of the title 'alternative'. I've always wondered if this was just a local culture or whether it was more widely spread. My DH is bemused by it.

I did , in London. Actually I still wear tea dresses with big boots aged 40+ , though not dms anymore as I don't have the patience to lace them.

grassblade · 22/08/2021 10:39

@OverByYer

We used to wear men’s M&S cardigans over the top of our dresses too. No idea why
Yes, we did too! Cardigan or a v-neck men's m&s jumper.

Yep - we did that too (East Midlands)

We wore mens jackets with the sleeves pushed up and Alice bands
The shame...... Grin

MiniTheMinx · 22/08/2021 10:43

South East, yep here too. Never liked Laura Ashley long dresses much but I had a purple velvet dress and a green one from LA. Several ditsy floral dark tea dresses, sloppy grandad cardigans and DM boots. Today I'm wearing......a floral mini dress, thick tights and DMs, still listening to some of the same music.

Effybriest · 22/08/2021 10:54

North here. Mid 80s. Flowery shorts with tights and dms, also long skirts with tassels, 'hippy' tops with same kind of tassels. Slouchy suede ankle boots usually with tassels. Guess there's a theme here Grin

Lessstressedhemum · 22/08/2021 10:54

I was at uni in the mid eighties. The long skirts with mirrors sewn in were my standard clothing, with either floral docs or high heeled Victorian type boots and a man's black velvet dinner jacket! Either that or vintage 50s frocks from Flip.

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 22/08/2021 10:59

Cherry red dms and long floral pinafores with thick black tights.

workshyfop · 24/08/2021 22:39

@grassblade as soon as I read your OP Ku Club came into my head. It’s a long time since I thought about those days. Happy memories!

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 24/08/2021 22:43

Oh yes.

With an old tweed jacket I "borrowed" from my father on top.

Joolsin · 24/08/2021 22:43

Ireland here. My standard garb was DMs, black woolly tights, very short dresses/skirts and giant jumpers/cardies, topped off with a second-hand man's overcoat. Good times!!

Turkishangora · 24/08/2021 22:45

Yes, North Staffordshire at the time, Laura Ashley dresses, oversized men's cardigans, tassle skirts, thick tights and dms. Still like floral dresses and chunky boots to be honest.

ArabellaPilkington · 24/08/2021 22:47

I didn't mix them and was a bit earlier.

I went in the same year from full on Goth going to Bauhaus gigs wearing studs and thick black eyeliner to fresh faced Laura Ashley and pumps, no in between 🤣

Gilead · 24/08/2021 22:55

Hertfordshire, for uni. Dms and this was my favourite dress at the time.

Did you wear Dr Marten boots with Laura Ashley dresses in the late eighties?
Ozberry · 24/08/2021 23:10

Yep, that was my look in the early 90s. I’ve taken to it again of late.

elQuintoConyo · 24/08/2021 23:24

Lessstressedhemum are you me? I bought a men's maroon velvet jacket from a charity shop, so many pockets!

I had hippy skirts with tassels, mirrors, yinyangs, tie dies etc from either Peaches in Taunton, or Happy Hippy Hut in Lincoln. No money for Laura Ashley, but any charity shop finds were worn to death!

I wear DMs and dresses now, I'm 46 Grin

seasonalremarks · 24/08/2021 23:43

Yes was it to do with Molly Ringwald? I went through a faze of alternating between wearing a velvet jacket or an expensive wool tailored waistcoat with a silk back that I picked up at a charity shop with tight jeans covered in patchwork that I had sewn on with soft DM boots. I wish I had some photos that was a cool look!

I also borrowed my brothers jumpers and jackets for a while and pushed the sleeves up Miami Vice style too whilst my friend wore all the LA dresses - what a pair! Grin

RainbowMum11 · 24/08/2021 23:45

And I do now too!!

Blueleah · 24/08/2021 23:49

I think it was a nationwide trend for several years. I wore a flowery spaghetti strap dress with a tshirt underneath, black tights and a pair of black DMs. To be honest I would probably wear the same outfit now and feel ok in it!

I started high school in 1992 and I remember this was how all the sixth formers dressed. We used to think they were so cool and plan how we'd dress like them when we were that age.

Roll on 1998 when we started sixth form and it was all hipster jeans and little tops Grin.

OldScrappyAndHungry · 25/08/2021 07:10

I did! London uni. DMs and hippy skirts/dresses. Still wear DMs and dresses now - so comfy Grin.

PaperMonster · 25/08/2021 09:14

Yes, I did! I wear DMs still. I have a pair of shoes that are 20 years plus that I wear with dresses or skirts and a newer pair of boots that go well with them. I’d love a pair of fur lined Chelsea boot style docs!

schoolsoutforever · 25/08/2021 09:44

Early nineties for me, central Scotland. Not Laura Ashley but long flowery skirts and dresses, or hippy ones with mirrors etc. Victorian underskirts, velvet jackets, thick black MS tights. Big, wavy hair to my bottom (which I wasted every morning drying naturally for THREE hours before leaving the house!). Thought I looked the bees knees!

schoolsoutforever · 25/08/2021 09:45

Oh and ubiquitous DMs
