I just watched the parachute death from Hollyoaks. I’ve never watched Hollyoaks, but oh my god, it was so haunting. I felt terrified.

I’m not sure I recommend anyone watching it! The only other times I’ve really been affected by tv was on This is England the tv series - the rape by the stepfather and then the crack orgy for the young girl with all the skanky men. Both made me feel really ill.

The only other tv that gets to me is Futurama at the end of Jurassic Bark - the dog WAITED 😭

Anything that you couldn’t watch again/haunted you?

Real, not fiction. The killings of two off-duty soldiers in Northern Ireland. The 'corporal killings' as it became known, were pretty much broadcast as they had just happened, minus the actual footage of their deaths of course.

@Marimaur I know exactly what scene and I turned away. That film was a chaotic head f*ck from start to finish!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 21/08/2021 23:02

Delacroix's execution in The Green Mile

Obviously I know it wasn't real, but it was awful ... AWFUL Shock

Mummyoflittledragon · 21/08/2021 23:02
  • This immediately made me think of the girl in the red coat in Schindler’s list.
  • A docufilm on the execution of George Stinney. He was a 14 yo black boy killed on the electric chair for killing 2 white girls in a fast and unfair trial and his conviction was only overturned recently.
  • The mass hangings in the Handmaids Tale

@LunaBunaTuna
I saw that Viking film with the pinned up hair a long time ago.

@oohmama

Sybil's death in downton abbey We've just re watched it all and omg I remember it was bad but since having kids it just hit me so hard...

And I'm not even sure what the film is called but it is about a volcano eruption, the family are in the boat and the water is acid and the grandma sacrifices herself and her legs burn off...
Watched that when I was younger and I still can't get over it...

I watched Dante peak as a small child (cheers mum) and that scene made me realize that one day I would also die. Come to think of it..Mum also let me walk in on her watching total recall when the guy gets his hands chopped off by the lift/ceiling -
Floogal · 21/08/2021 23:06

Many of the nspcc adverts. Some were too gratuitous

isitjustlockdown · 21/08/2021 23:06

Mine are all quite old.

Spooks, an early episode during which a woman was pushed head first into a deep fat fryer.

A show of which the name escapes me, but about a bullied boy who was tied to a chair and thrown in a swimming pool.

Threads, all of it, but particularly the woman hugging the dead baby.

Fiddliestofsticks · 21/08/2021 23:07

I dont know the name of the movie this is from, and I dont remember anything else about it.

I was just a kid and had a TV in my room for the first time and put it on in the middle of the night when I couldn't sleep. It was some movie at 2am on channel 5 or something and in one scene, the mother puts her ain to bed and he wants to take a toy into bed with him. It was a pull along little horse toy, so had a long string on it. He cuddles down and goes to sleep. In the morning when the mum goes to wake him, she finds him dead because the string on the toy strangled him.

I very quickly thend the TV off but it terrified me and I've never gotten over that.

Blackberrycream · 21/08/2021 23:07

@Audit
I remember being extremely disturbed by that as well.

SnazzyButtons · 21/08/2021 23:08

Yes. Jurassic Bark.

The mother character Precious is also something I think about still from time to time even thought I’ve seen that film once and years ago. Just horrible.

I think I’ve blocked out a lot of other things, but…

Dumbo, his mother cradling him in her trunk, I can’t think of it without welling up.

The Green Mile fucked me up for weeks. But I was only 12 or 13 at the time. But I still remember how madly affected I was by it.

Gorillas in the mist

labtest57 · 21/08/2021 23:10

Years ago I watched a two part miniseries called I Know my First Name is Steven. It was the true story of a seven year old boy abducted and held captive for 7 years. I was absolutely haunted by it, and over 30 years later still think about it.
Fiction wise, the death scene at the beginning of Cliffhanger, Damon's death in Brookside, the end scene in The Champ, and The Body episode of Buffy

Thelikelylass · 21/08/2021 23:10

Hereditary - horrible, horrible film for all the wrong reasons. So distasteful.
A recent film I stumbled upon - 'The Nightingale' - one particularly horrendous scene and I have a strong stomach.
'A.I.' - not a great film but my ex- broke his heart crying at one particular scene, he was inconsolable!
A 70's kids show called 'Kizzy' about a gypsy girl and her gran's caravan being burnt down. I was so traumatised!!!!

Elderflower14 · 21/08/2021 23:11

@Pebbledashery

This is a random one.. But Midsummer Murders, Badgers drift episode. Everything about that episode gives me the absolute creeps.
Yup this one and The House In The Woods with the garotted couple and also Talking To The Dead with the ghostly monks! The ends of The Bucket List and The Boy I T S Pyjamas made me howl. I went and saw the film Calvary in an art house type cinema in London with my sister.. There were about 12 other people in there too.. The end of the film was so unexpected and shockingly sad that we all walked out on shocked silence!
MyfanwyMontez · 21/08/2021 23:12

For the pp who said Eden Lake, that film disturbed for me days because I think parts of it could really happen. Oh and when they put the tyre around the neck of that boy and lit it , horrifying .

LobotomisedIceSkatingFan · 21/08/2021 23:12

@52andblue

On a similar theme I once saw most of a film on TV one afternoon about a child who was asked to keep a secret - the atmosphere was harrowing although almost nothing was shown. Plus I remember a film about a girl abuse victim who found her way to safety but didn't go there until she had handfuls of cash because she thought she had to buy her safety. it was a Uk drama - I wish I knew what it was called.

I wouldn't even attempt to watch most on this list.

I think that was the one mentioned upthread, with Brooke Kinsella. 'No Child Of Mine'. Might've had Sharon Small in, as well.
itsnotmeitsu · 21/08/2021 23:12

'Marley and Me'. Saw the film once and read the book, but can't face it now. The film often seems to be on television but I won't watch it again. I miss my various rescue boys too much, and my heart has broken with all of them.

Thelikelylass · 21/08/2021 23:13

Oh god another one how could i forget - I watched it again recently and it brought back all that terror of seeing it when I was young - 'Lost Hearts' - the League of Gentlemen guys MUST have been influenced by this.

Athenajm80 · 21/08/2021 23:13

@TheMamaYo

Not TV/film, but a book. Is that allowed? Saving Noah by Lucinda Berry. It was harrowing. I've read it years ago, and it still lingers.
That book was amazing but yes, harrowing. I read an article once about a teenager in a similar situation, only he hadn't done anything physical. He went to a psychologist for help and they got him to tell his mum. He then set up an online support group but only for those who didn't want to do anything iyswim. If anyone in the group acted at all like they wanted to take some kind of action, they got reported to the police. I think he did a radio interview about it. It must be hideous to be in that position, but it's understandably an emotive subject and difficult to discuss with anyone. I have recommended the book to a few people though.

I'm sure in the article I read, it said that various psychologists had tried to do research to try to get to the root of people like that, but no one will fund it as they are worried people will think it's supportive, but without this research we won't be able to effectively stop offenders

Elderflower14 · 21/08/2021 23:16

My son was somewhat traumatised watching What We Did On Our Holiday.... If id known it had such dark humour I would never have taken him and his best friend.
DS found his Dad dead when he was almost five..
The similar scene in the film really upset him. We got out after the film and he was almost crying... 😔 😔 😔

ILoveCake12 · 21/08/2021 23:16

Many but the film I cant get out of my head is Hereditary with Toni Collette. If you've watched it, you'll know what scene I'm talking about. Paranoid when I'm driving now on a hot day and the kids want to get some fresh air. Also Hannibal when he's eating Ray Liotta's brain when he's still conscious. Still makes me weak thinking about that.

Pebbledashery · 21/08/2021 23:17

I remember a film I watched as a kid. It was based on a book called Almost to late. The film was called Anything to survive.. Joey from friends is in it. There's a scene where they are shipwrecked and have no food and the older sister starts eating seaweed..but it's full of maggots 🤮.. Urgh still remember that like yesterday.

Itawapuddytat · 21/08/2021 23:17

Sophie's Choice
Schindler's List
La Vita e Bella

when Leia Organa becomes one with the Force (I've alwats loved Carrie Fisher so much Sad )

and the end of THAT episode of Buffy when she comes home and finds her mother dead

and the epilogue in Dr Who "Family of Blood" ( when the WW1 veteran sees The Doctor and Martha again) and the final minutes of David Tennant's last episode , his "I don't want to go"...

THAT episode of Outlander season 1 I will not watch again (even though I am a fan of the show and I enjoy re-watching it)

Xtraincome · 21/08/2021 23:18

Just remembered- TV film 'Little Boy Blue' when they go to see his body and a staff member in the hospital brought in Everton bedding so it looked like he was sleeping Sad. Broke my heart.
