Any fellow BTS fans (who are old enough to be their mum) around?

At the grand old age of 41 I've become completely obsessed with a boyband.

I haven't felt this way since NKOTB days when 8 year old me used to actually cry because I was so utterly convinced that Joey McIntyre was singing Please Don't Go Girl directly to me via my pink double cassette player 😳.

I listen to them in the car on my way to and from work every day. Watch YouTube videos while I'm cooking dinner. 13 year old DD is mortified. 7 year old DS loves it and can tell his Jimin from his Jin on vocal alone 😆.

They're just so talented and wholesome.

Anyone else? Or am I alone in my mid-life crisis?

P.s. I know about the ethical issues in K-pop but this is a lighthearted Friday night thread and after a hellish week I don't need any extra piss on my chips 😃.

They are too sparkly and plasticky for me, I am not referring to the members alleged surgerys, but more their general style and look, how they present themselves including all the cutesy stuff like heart fingers, behavior at fan meets, wearing silly costumes and OTT stage-managed horseplay between members.

I've tried to listen or watch their music videos a few times but they are cringy to me, I can't do it.

If you enjoy it there's no harm.

LazyMareofEastown · 20/08/2021 22:14

I agree that their aesthetic is OTT. Don't like the coloured contacts etc. Wasn't aware of any surgery theories (hope not 😟).

I don't get any fakeness from them though. They seem like well rounded guys who share genuine camaraderie and friendships plus their personalities all seem to work together well within the band. I love how goofy and funny they are in behind the scenes videos. They come across as relaxed and happy in each others company. I cannot bear James Corden but their carpool karaoke is just pure serotonin for me.

Yes join the kdrama threads....it is a rabbit hole of pure joy. I LUFFS BTS so so so much. I am way too old (also 40s). I'm ashamed but also, meh, the heart wants what the heart wants. And my heart wants to watch 7 impossibly cute young men perform impeccable choreography and then dick around wearing stupid outfits as if they are puppies made into humans by mistake.

bruffin · 20/08/2021 22:32

@RampantIvy

DD adores them, but she is 21.
so does my DD 23 and so do a lot of her friends

I admire their dancing, and like a few songs.

Perfect description Larry 😂👏💜

My dd loves BTS & Got7 - was singing along to a Got7 song in the car the other day and she looked at me in humiliation and said ‘oh mum, you don’t like Got7, stop it.’

I suppose that makes me old! I do like the catchy tunes though, they’re so upbeat. I like BTS ‘run’ which dd listens to constantly out loud since mil got her a speaker for Christmas. I did suggest it might want to stay at granny’s house but apparently not.

LazyMareofEastown · 20/08/2021 22:43

Larry 😚

Thanks Rowdy - will venture over!

The dancing is amazing but it's the vocals that are transfixing me tbh. Individually and collectively, the blend of the vocal line with the rap line. I am just totally hooked! Their cover of Fix You by Coldplay and the I'll Be Missing You cover from their Live Lounge - just 🤌.

Scrap Corden, I meant to say the NPR Tiny Desk Concert. I defy you to watch that and not come away an ARMY 😆.

I am 50 and just discovered them. Saw a documentary on them and son who not really a fan sent me their music . It's my new walking music. Cheers me up and uplifts me. Dont find them attractive but like to watch odd videos

Bea · 20/08/2021 23:53

Oh god! Don't get me started! But Army over here! It's just pure unadulterated joy! It's sooo much fun and a whole treasure trove of goodies!
Wembley gigs were just joyful and amazing! I could go on and on!... Just enjoy! Life is too short! Sing and dance and laugh and cry to your hearts content! 💜

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 21/08/2021 00:56

I'm also 41 and have become completely obsessed over the last 2 years! I also hang out on the kdrama thread; it's lovely 😊
BTS have honestly cheered me up through some really rubbish times. They are so hard working and sweet.
Have you watched Run BTS yet OP??

MercyBooth · 21/08/2021 02:54

My 26 year old niece LOVES them.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 21/08/2021 06:27

Not BTS as I've never been into boy bands really. I like the girl group Blackpink. I am 31.

There's a lot of snobbery around Kpop that it's for kids and not "real" music. There is a lot of talent in it!

AbsolutelyPatsy · 21/08/2021 06:53

going to have to google bts

bettys · 21/08/2021 08:54

Another BTS fan here and I am waaaaaaaay over 40! 💜

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 21/08/2021 09:01

Loads of BTS on my exercise playlist - great, classic pop.
and from time to time I watch the videos to gawp at the sheer brilliance of their dancing. They are very beautiful young men, although not at all fanciable.

‘Not at all fanciable’ is a really interesting way to put it - dd was watching one of their videos the other day and I remember thinking it was almost as if they were engineered to be a ‘first crush’ if that makes any sense? Like they seemed totally safe for a young girl (preteen/early teen) to have a crush on.
homeappliances · 21/08/2021 11:15

Fell down the rabbit hole 2 years ago! They're my mid life crisis 💜

biwinoone · 14/09/2021 11:45

I started following what they did about 4/5 years ago and I am in my late 30's. Love some of their songs although the some of the new ones are meh. I didn't like On but my absolute favourites (in my opinion master pieces ) are bapsae, black swan, even if I die it's you, truth untold, airplane part 2, pied piper and I need you. I also watch their run episodes. they are just so full of joy and make me happy. They are so lovely and cute that I want to adopt them.

I also like twice. Have you heard their i want you to cry for me and can't stop me? Absolute bops.

biwinoone · 14/09/2021 11:52

Oh, also have you heard their 'so what' song and spring day?

JadeSeahorse · 14/09/2021 12:02

Absolutely love them and I'm definitely old enough to mother them. And more!🤣

They are so talented and such lovely young men. (Jungkook sings like an angel and is just gorgeous, Jimin is a very sexy little flirt with a beautiful voice and Suga just has something about him which is dangerously appealing but I love them all.)

I honestly don't think they have had any major surgeries as if you look at their pre debut videos of when they were kids, they have changed very little.

You are definitely not alone @LadyMareofEastown 😁.

JadeSeahorse · 14/09/2021 12:05

@biwinoone

Wow, they are two of my favourites too!

Great minds think alike eh? 😂

biwinoone · 14/09/2021 22:48

yup! There are some things I do not like such as pretending to be boyfriends to their fans, the over the top fan service (which is nauseating tbh) and the diet culture they perpetuate but if some one can look past that then they are very talented, hard working and nice guys who make great music.

Must be hard to be them, to not make a single mistake as you are in public eye and so much pressure to be a good representative of their country.

Do you like their newer english songs? They are okish as compared to their old songs.

mrswormwood1 · 14/09/2021 23:05

Ugh discovered then last winter and became an army over night! I totally agree with op, I hadn't had a boy band crush since I was a child and it was such an amazing feeling the joy they brought me haha felt like a teenager again!
I started off with the easy ones "boy with love" and "dynamite" but now I much prefer the more rap style songs!
Does anyone have a favourite? I love them all for different reasons and I think my favourite changes each week!
