How to label school socks

Twilightstarbright · 20/08/2021 15:59

DS starts school and we’ve been told everything must be labelled, including the grey school socks. I can use a name stamp or woven labels- stick on labels not allowed. Any ideas for how to sew on woven labels? I don’t think the name stamp ink will show up on black.

It’s a private school and they are strict.

Turn the sock inside out and sew it along the length of the sock near the top.

It's a bloody faff. I've done all my nametaping bar the socks as I can't quite face it...

Would iron on ones be allowed?

BigPyjamas · 20/08/2021 16:06

Personally I wouldn't bother with socks. We are also in a private school.

If they get lost, just buy some more. School has never noticed, and we've never yet lost any.

And if the school notice you can always see them on layer.

(When I did see some on I did a loop at the top, but the DC complained it was scratchy)

I would be tempted to use a Sharpie TBH.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 20/08/2021 16:09

Do they have a turned-over cuff at the top? If so you can stitch the woven label to the outside of the sock and it will be hidden by the turnover.

Thankfully our regulation socks have a band of white so I can stamp the reverse.

SunbathingDragon · 20/08/2021 16:12

Use a silver Sharpie pen for black socks and just write on them.

Twilightstarbright · 20/08/2021 16:13

@dorothygaleandtoto love it!

Thank you for the suggestions, I’m contemplating not doing it but equally don’t want to get off on the wrong foot (pardon the pun) with the school.

I do have a solution for this! It’s not cheap but ... schoolsox.

PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat · 20/08/2021 19:32

Can you embroider? You could work your surname in a simple back stitch.

namechange7865 · 20/08/2021 19:40

I'd rather pay to replace the odd lost sock than go to that effort. They're not going to fine you if you don't label them, honest!

MancMum2000 · 20/08/2021 19:44

I just wouldn’t bother. Why would they lose socks anyway? My kids never remove their socks at school.

TheAnswerIsCake · 20/08/2021 19:51

I used to sew name tapes on the toes but it was a faff. Now I use these www.easy2name.com/school/uniform/letter-transfers Still put them on the toes.

housecoat1968 · 20/08/2021 19:53

Either don't bother and replace as needed or use iron on labels but use hair straighteners instead of the iron as easier.

Theunamedcat · 20/08/2021 19:56

When will they realistically be taken off

Peanutsandchilli · 20/08/2021 20:05

I wouldn't bother. If they get changed for pe, tell him to put his socks in his shoes. If school complain they're not labelled, then ask them how you're supposed to do it. I can't imagine anything more irritating than a name tape in my sock! I can't imagine many kids lose their socks.

cloverleafy · 21/08/2021 07:22

Are they generic grey school socks or specific ones. If the former, M&S school socks all have a white space on the inside of the top band, designed to write on with a labelling pen. Along with the sizing, which is a godsend when pairing socks for 3 children all in various sized grey socks.

If school branded socks, I'd decide how likely to be lost and how much I cared. Name tapes on socks are a real faff and have to be done v carefully.

Twilightstarbright · 21/08/2021 07:37

Thanks all.

I work in a boarding school. Please don't use iron on labels, they are rubbish ☺️ all our underwear goes in netbags to be sent to the laundry so as long as the net bags are named, the individual items don't need to be. Is this something you could do?

HelloDulling · 21/08/2021 07:47

I use the iron on My Nametapes ones on the sole of the foot. They are brilliant.

Aethelthryth · 21/08/2021 07:53

Fold the name tape in two and fold in the raw ends. Sew just the folded edges to the sock. This is much quicker and more durable than sewing the full length. Whatever you do, he will lose half of his socks and acquire many socks belonging to others.

So, so glad to be past this stage
