So, I'm 36, I've been working 20 years and my new employer wants to see my GCSE certificates. So yes kids, they are important Grin

Admin/receptionist job.

Lost them years ago during a house move and its going to cost me several forms of I.D and £45.00 to get them from AQA.

Who else still has theirs 15+ years later?

Yes - had to produce my English one recently to prove i spoke the language for a citizenship thing abroad.

mid 40s

Abraxan · 20/08/2021 14:35

Yes I have mine.
Have always had to show GCSE English and maths for new jobs (schools) so know where they are.

OnceTheyDid · 20/08/2021 14:36

I don't have mine. Don't even remember my results and have never needed them. I did keep my post grad and degree certificates though.

I'm 47. Not looked at them since the day the envelope was opened. Not sure where they are.

2bazookas · 20/08/2021 14:44

I've still got mine 60 years later.

They're in the same file as my university degree certificates, my first professional registration, and an orange card with my earliest National Insurance stamps.

squishee · 20/08/2021 14:46

I do

MissyB1 · 20/08/2021 14:48

Nope! And boy has it caused me major hassle! I’m 53 and recently wanted to retrain in a new job, so was doing an apprenticeship. They wanted my old “O Level” certificates. Well those got lost in an acrimonious divorce years ago! They were from various different exam boards some of which apparently don’t exist anymore- so no getting any duplicates unfortunately. I was forced to then take Level 2 Maths, English and ICT. Angry bloody irritating!

user1497207191 · 20/08/2021 14:49

Yep, have them in the box with all the other important paperwork that "may" one day be needed.

I have needed them for a few jobs over the years, as well as my A level certificates and professional qualification certificate.

It does seem a lot of people "lie" on their job application forms, so some employers require sight of certificates as proof.

millymae · 20/08/2021 14:53

Me
and every one of my school reports. Mum gave them to me when I left home and I can’t bring myself to throw them away. I refused my university stuff, including my final year dissertation, but I know that it’s still sitting in her loft.

StarttoFinish · 20/08/2021 14:54

We ask for them to prove English and Maths regardless of other qualifications.

On the odd occasion that we've my boss waived the requirement due to sob stories, the staff have been nothing but trouble from the start.

WillowintheUK · 20/08/2021 14:56

I left school in 1966 and still have my O Level and Higher certificates (Scotland) as well as all the various FE Certificates I got. Not much use nowadays, of course, but nice to have.

SirenSays · 20/08/2021 14:59

My school closed down just after I left so I never even got mine.

juneybean · 20/08/2021 15:00

Yes also 36 years old and working 20 years and still have my GCSEs and Record of Achievement Grin

Errr… well my “sob story” was true, bloody ex destroyed everything I left in the house!!

And as an intelligent sensible (to the point of boring) 53 year old, I’m unlikely to be causing trouble!

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 20/08/2021 15:01

Im 52 and have my o level and a level certificates

Never been asked to show them as far as i can remember

Carandi · 20/08/2021 15:02

I can't remember ever having to show them but yes, I still have mind 40 years later. Mine are for O'Levels, CSEs, Pitmans and RSA typing and shorthand.

pheonixrebirth · 20/08/2021 15:02

I've got mine in a presentation folder that everyone got at the time-1996.

Knittingupastorm · 20/08/2021 15:02

I think maybe my parents have them somewhere.

BalloonSlayer · 20/08/2021 15:03

I have got mine and could lay my hands on them in less than 5 minutes.

I used to work somewhere where people often approached asking for proof of their qualifications, or I was asked to confirm qualifications. In my experience when people can't remember their grades, their grades were not very good ...

sashh · 20/08/2021 15:03

In teaching you need to show the originals for every job you apply for.

I did supply for years so it could be every few weeks I was asked for them, anything that wasn't just one day I had to show them.

Mine are O Levels from 1982-84 and in a folder. Anyone else remember sitting 1 or 2 early to 'get them out of the way'? Obviously this would mess with league tables so doesn't happen much these days.

Things were always getting damages, drink spilled on or smoked over at home, my brother's had tea stains on the day he got them so I put mine in a file.

The file/folder has changed over the years.

TheHumanSatsuma · 20/08/2021 15:04

Yes! My O Levels from 1973 and everything since.
I think the certificate for a width of the swimming baths in 1968 is still there with them!

dottydodah · 20/08/2021 15:05

I certainly dont have mine! Had to do a Maths and English test for a course I was going on a while back.(luckily I passed!) My DD lost her Birth Certificate .Cost £11.00 to get a new one online .Should imagine there would be a way of getting GCSE certificates in a similar way?

Councilworker · 20/08/2021 15:05

Like @DanglingMod I'm in local authority. Despite an A level and a degree in English Language I had to reorder my English Language GCSE cert.
After 11 years here I am no longer surprised by the absolute inflexibility of HR and document verification

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 20/08/2021 15:05

I do. I provided them not long ago, 20 years later, to prove I qualified for an apprenticeship. I expect to have to do so again soon for the master's degree apprenticeship I plan to do next.

You should always keep your qualification certificates. They don't exactly take up much space.
