6kg weight gain in 4 weeks?

Holweighthelp · 19/08/2021 22:18

Need some advice before I full on panic! I’ve had 4 weeks off - one week to get married and 3 weeks honeymoon. After 2 weeks, I gained 2.5kg which is normal for me as I often hold water and know i had eaten a bit more than normal and not worked out. At the end of these other two weeks I’m totalling a 6.8kg weight gain. I don’t think I’ve eaten much more than normal (a bit - maybe a pound gain expected) and I haven’t drunk much - maybe 2 drinks a day.

My starting weight was 60kg which is healthy for me and I’m now 66.8kg (granted I’ve weighed after a meal in the evening).

Is this normal? Please give tips!! I’m freaking out a bit as I’m very weight conscious. I can see the weight gain on my stomach, it’s sticking out like I’m pregnant - very bloated.

If it’s relevant, the country I’m holidaying in is 40+ degrees and humid

That's a huge weight gain in 4 weeks - nearly a stone - so I understand why you are worried. Any other symptoms? I'd eat healthily and exercise for a week and see if it starts coming off. Otherwise, check it out with a doctor.

SpaceshiptoMars · 19/08/2021 22:26

Are you pregnant?
Lots more salt in the holiday diet? (Water retention)
40 degrees plus - are you moving around at all? Is your food stuck in transit because you're lying by the pool all day?
Do you feel OK? In pain?

@DrDetriment I know, it is strange. I feel sluggish and sick after every meal. I get bad gas too. But this is normal for me, any meal and I bloat. The only time I didn’t was doing keto but that is unsustainable for me. Doctor just assumes IBS

@SpaceshiptoMars definitely not pregnant. It’s a mixture of walking and laying by the pool. Bowel is regular. Feel sick and sluggish most the time. Can noticeably see change in body. Feel scared and sad by it as I really struggle mentally with body image

You weighed yourself in the evening after eating… you can’t rely on that weight.

It’ll likely be less tomorrow; and it’s not uncommon to weigh more when you’re somewhere hot, I always do. Heat can make your digestive system even more sluggish than normal.

Forget about it until you can weigh yourself at the same time that you normally do.

bellsbuss · 19/08/2021 22:37

I hold on to a lot of fluid when I'm abroad but find once home it goes within days bar 2-3 pounds which is due to over eating.

TheLeadbetterLife · 19/08/2021 22:39

How / why are you weighing yourself on holiday?

It’s probably just dodgy scales. Forget about it and enjoy the break.

SpamIAm · 19/08/2021 22:45

I mean...I've put on a stone in a weeks holiday before so 6.8kg in three weeks I'd be happy with. It'll be less than that if you weigh yourself in the morning.

In my experience, holiday weight drops off quickly once you return to your normal habits.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 19/08/2021 22:48

I can gain 2kg in water from flying. Every single time!

I am usually a good 1-1.5kg heavier in the evening than I am in morning. So between water retention due to flying and evening weight…chances are you are looking at maybe an actual gain of 3-3.5 kg. Which is a kg a week. Not so bad.

SpaceshiptoMars · 19/08/2021 22:53

You should be drinking lots of water in those temperatures. A glass an hour at least. Don't think the alcohol is helping. What sort of food are you eating? Is it much different to your usual at home?

usernotfound0000 · 19/08/2021 22:54

I put on 5 pounds in 3 days on a long weekend last week so I can see it is definitely possible! But, weighing in the evening is definitely when you are at your heaviest. I find I bloat more after a lot of salt so I assume water retention. I would try and eat normally for a few days and see if it goes down, 2 days after my trip away I had already lost half of the 5 pounds just by eating regular food instead of my greedy portions!

amusedbush · 19/08/2021 23:02

DH and l eloped abroad and stayed a full week as our honeymoon. I’d gone from eating fairly low carb, healthy food to eating my way around New York - bagels, pizza, burgers, booze, desserts. Between the food, the heat and the flight water retention, I gained 12lbs in a week.

I went back to eating normally and the ‘gain’ was gone in another week.

Are you due on? I can put on half a stone at that horrible time of the month! Add a holiday and all the food and relaxation that comes with it, it's definitely possible. As previous posters have said, the extra weight will soon melt away once you are back home to your normal routine. Try not to be too hard on yourself x

stevalnamechanger · 19/08/2021 23:49

I flux by 2-3kg a during the day on my scales 🤣🤣

Weigh yourself tomorrow AM in the morning naked and report back .

A 2-3 week clean diet and lots of walking should help ease some off. If not see your GP.

Please don't panic yet

CommanderBurnham · 19/08/2021 23:53

I bloat a lot when I'm away. Try and drink loads of water and see if that helps with any water retention you might have.

Normally I have about 12 hours gap between dinner and breakfast. When on hols I eat dinner at 8pm, finishing at 10pm and have breakfast at 8am in the morning. If you are doing likewise, not having long enough of a fast is slowing metabolism and causing you to gain weight. If you are normally strict with your diet, even eating an ice cream a day and 2 glasses of wine can cause weight gain. Cut out alcohol and sugar after hols and it should come off easily. I always put on a half stone when on a week hols, drinking 2 glasses of wine a day and eating one ice cream a day.

Holweighthelp · 23/08/2021 00:25

Thanks everyone.

I wasn’t drinking that amount of water, no. I was probably very dehydrated. The scales were accurate as we monitored it by husbands weight. There were digi scales in the bathroom. They’re usually at every hotel I’ve stayed!!

The morning after I went to 65.7kg then 2 hours later 63.3kg.

I now sit firmly at 63.3kg at home too. So 3kg gain, normal I think. I am worried about how my stomach felt and how it makes me feel. I was eating normal foods, I tend to eat out a fair amount in England too. A lot of sushi, fish and meat.

I’m definitely bloated and hoping it drops off, will keep updated!
Thanks everyone
