What's my job? (light hearted)

When you meet other holiday makers abroad, they generally ask what you job is.

I'm always tempted to pretend I do something much more interesting, ie brain surgeon (although after talking to me for a few minutes they would no doubt realise I'm fibbing).

Any other suggestions!

I used to work for the National Tissue Service. My job was to drive to mortified around the country and carry out cadaveric tissue retrieval. We'd take skin, bone and tendons. Now that's a conversations starter/stopper (depending on the person!) .

Ponkypig282 · 19/08/2021 19:27

*mortuaries

I have a job that can sound as dull or as glam as I like (no, not outing myself....).

I jazz up or down depending on the situation.

Ifixfastjets · 19/08/2021 19:31

I'm "just" a mechanic

I did meet a lady ages ago whose job is putting the messages on the gantry signs on the motorway

Twickerhun · 19/08/2021 19:34

If I told you about my job I’d have to kill you….. I know a couple of people in the e diplomatic service and they can’t talk much about anything. They are super charming and totally deflect attention from their jobs which always makes it all so much more interesting.

SENCO/ teacher. Just for reference, this does not mean I want to spend my sun lounger time giving advice on how to support your child’s reading/ maths. And I really don’t want to read your child’s EHCP/ professional’s report and suggest what your school should be doing. Yes, this has happened a few times.

PeskyRooks · 19/08/2021 19:55

When we registered dc birthday I tried to talk my Dh into saying we had more interesting occupations on the birth certificate. I thought we could go for Paranormal Investigator and Burlesque Dancer. I thought it would make it more interesting for future generations researching the family tree!

PeskyRooks · 19/08/2021 19:56

Birth not birthday

This ⬆️

I work with children. When on holiday I absolutely do not want to spend time with them. I dont want to sit near them or listen to them scream. I just about cope with my own. I just want to shut down, relax and recharge.

toopoliticallycorrect · 19/08/2021 20:21

A funeral director may be an "interesting" choice!

Just say you’re an author.

LostArcher · 19/08/2021 20:33

@QueenofLouisiana Me too and have exactly this from everyone not just on holiday. After they've said 'how lovely' and the ubiquitous'you're brave' when you say secondary and thankfully some comments about how crap Gav is!

Have to say, I was once at Champneys and there were loads of teachers. We had great fun trying to guess which subjects we taught.

thenewduchessofhastings · 19/08/2021 20:45

Not being asked on holiday but we had our garden landscaped last year;bored nosey neighbours trapped like us in lock down took to walking past my FIL's houses on their strolls;FIL can only be found tinkering in his front garden outside his garage on his motorbikes;several were very Cheeky and asked him how we were paying for the garden so my FIL started telling thèm my DH has taken up drug dealing. He has the ability to say these sort of things completely poker faced so the neighbours has no idea if it was true............

It made us all howl.

DukeOfEarlGrey · 19/08/2021 21:06

I used to have the kind of interesting job that everyone asks lots of questions about once they find out. It can be kind of exhausting when meeting strangers (I’m an introvert) so my friend and I once brainstormed the job titles that we thought would provoke the fewest questions at parties. We eventually decided that #1 was ‘Project Manager’... and if pushed for more specifics, ‘... in IT’. I still enjoy using my alter ego!

BarbaraofSeville · 19/08/2021 21:19

I still have the interesting and weird job that no-one's heard of Duke and I keep trying to think of something that people will be ambivalent about but I could busk it if needed.

I sometimes say I'm a civil servant, which is true, but it's absolutely nothing like what anyone would imagine.

But I did once get mine and DPs dinner paid for on a group holiday when I won a bet that the rest of the group wouldn't guess what I did in 20 questions Grin

Triphazards · 19/08/2021 21:20

Boilermaker's nut polisher.

And this here's my mate.

tinkywinkyshandbag · 19/08/2021 21:41

@DukeOfEarlGrey my DH IS a project manager in IT!! And it IS very boring

toopoliticallycorrect · 20/08/2021 00:25

We met a young guy on holiday who was a vet and he appeared to get asked lots of questions.

I think doctors get similar responses too!

allergyupset · 20/08/2021 00:32

You should hesitate for a couple of seconds, before telling them in a nervous manner that you're a teacher. They will then spend the rest of the holiday speculating that you really work for MI5.

keeping2chevronsapart · 20/08/2021 00:50

I'd tell them asking a stranger what job they do is very bad manners 😁

MeMumI · 20/08/2021 11:25

Just say you work for a large organisation in Cheltenham. They're not allowed to say what they do, so that's what they often say when they work for GCHQ. I'm always intrigued when I meet someone who works there, but have never managed to get more gossip than that!

Sunnysal · 20/08/2021 11:34

We like to cruise and have several alter egos. We like to imply we are titled or ex spies, now retired.
