Why is Facebook so shit?!

Wtf is wrong with Facebook? First world problem I know but when I go to look at my feed on the iPhone app (and update the feed) it's showing me posts made by casual acquaintances weeks ago. And repeatedly! This is not new, it's been happening for months

  • a woman who once lived in my childhood street's, daughters, 18th birthday on 1st August. Always in the first two posts served to me. No new comments since I last saw it so it's not that.
  • woman I went To school with is selling her bike (3rd august) I've seen that fucking bike so many sodding times
Meanwhile close friends posts I never see, some pitch up in my feed several days later. Groups I follow (sales ones especially where you have to be quick) I barely see any posts and then I get several in quick succession weeks later.

How the hell do I just make it 'chronological order' and not 'the same post and pictures of Mary and her boyfriend on holiday in Crete three weeks ago'?

Click on "most recent" in the menu

ssd · 17/08/2021 21:20

Aww to be fair, its always been shite

Planesandflying · 17/08/2021 21:22

Does my head in, there'll be one crumb of interest in amongst all the drivel

FlorenceNightshade · 17/08/2021 21:22

The most recent tab needs to be reselected often and at random ime! Also all the best people are on mumsnet instead Grin

CakeandGo · 17/08/2021 21:25

Click on "most recent" in the menu
I have to do this every time I log in or else it’ll keep showing me stuff I looked at weeks ago at the top of my feed.
GintyMcGinty · 17/08/2021 21:25

My Facebook is nice.

I'm only friends with real life friends and family. So what I see is nice stuff shared by nice people.

If you accept 500 'friend' requests from all and sundry then don't be surprised if you see a lot of garbage.

GoWalkabout · 17/08/2021 21:33

My bugbear is 'pages you might like'. Unlike friend suggestions you can't remove them. For several months now it has been showing me a page of someone from my town pulling a really stupid face (she's perfectly nice I am sure). I probably should follow and then unfollow or block but I am worried it will never go then.

fallfallfall · 17/08/2021 21:34

i'm with @GintyMcGinty on this.
small number of close friends and family. good privacy settings and certainly don't "follow" anyone.

GoWalkabout · 17/08/2021 21:35

Also, I follow local businesses because I am interested in them and want to regularly see their updates/jobs/ events but unless I constantly interact with them Facebook never shows them to me again, and if I do interact it swamps me with them.

Inextremis · 17/08/2021 21:35

It's driving me mad at the moment as it keeps showing me sentimental posts about pet loss (you know, the Rainbow Bridge stuff and similar) under 'suggested for you'. Doesn't matter how much I try to change my preferences and click 'never show this ad again' - still the buggers keep coming, and I find it really upsetting, as I have elderly pets. I sort of wince every time I scroll down my feed and have ended up in tears more than once. It's just one of my soft spots, and I don't want to see it all the blinkin' time! I use FB to keep in touch with friends back in the UK, so I can't just stop using it - though I really wish I could at the moment :(

I agree with the OP that it's pretty shit at the moment and shows posts from ages ago whilst failing to show more recent ones. Bloody annoying,.

BrilloPaddy · 17/08/2021 21:40

It was very liberating to have a cull of random acquaintances, and I've now got less than 50 friends...... most of whom are family.

You get far less shit to follow, and I happily belong to several spaniel groups so get to see dogs all day.

FlorenceNightshade · 17/08/2021 21:43

Oh I love the “people you may know” list! Yes I know them and I dislike them thanks Facebook for reminding me

I have a paltry 120 friends, all of while I have met, and I keep the 'acquaintances' because I'm nosy. Nevertheless I don't want to see pics of their kids school trip everyday for 2 weeks.

Hitting most recent seems to resolve the issue there and then but then reverts back to 'here's that fucking photo of Sandra and Dave in Crete again'.

Why does Facebook seem to think this is a good algorithm?!

Okay where is this is the iPhone app??
OP posts:
GiantKitten · 18/08/2021 03:44

@Malin52 I can’t find it on the app either, but if you open FB in safari it’s there.
Doesn’t transfer across to the app but you can at least catch up on what you’ve missed Hmm

Why is Facebook so shit?!
garlictwist · 18/08/2021 06:32

I find that Facebook is really user unfriendly - it's cluttered, makes no sense and all the functions are hard to find. I have to run the business page for work and just hate it. It seems so outdated nowadays.

Malin52 · 18/08/2021 06:41

Okay I found it on the app!
Menu- scroll down a bit and click see all
Then a tab pops up 'recent and favourites'
I clicked that and now I have tab options on my news feed to see favorites or recent now! Recent shows chronological posts!

Fucking life changing

Sorry Sandra and Dave. I've had enough of your gurning on the beach.

I use Reddit to pass the time instead now

Silvercatowner · 18/08/2021 06:53

I love my Facebook. It's full of news from the gardening, crochet and cats groups I follow. I've unfollowed all my friends.

Honeydukesmum · 18/08/2021 07:06

you have made my day. I’ve missed so much recently because of this . Thank you xxx

KarenofSparta · 18/08/2021 07:10

DC say Facebook's for grandparents these days.

Their words not mine before you 🔥 me (!)

Paranoidandroidmarvin · 18/08/2021 07:10

@Silvercatowner I did this as well. Couldn’t cope with the nonsense that people posted. So now I only follow groups on there. Mostly book related and local groups.

Clarkey86 · 18/08/2021 07:20

Having to repeatedly click “Most recent” drives me mad too.

As do the random notifications for my groups that keep reappearing even when I get rid of them, and all of the random groups crap it shows in between my actual groups feed. I don’t want to know about mushroom foraging!

AbsolutelyPatsy · 18/08/2021 07:54

i only get group updates
never friend updates
