Passport renewal

We all had our passports renewed in 2018. When will the kids need a new one? Have things changed because of Brexit?

What does it say the expiry date is on the passports?

There was another thread about this recently and we've just fallen foul of it. Don't look at expiry date but look at date of issue, plus 10 years and you need at least 6 months left when you go on holiday. It used to be that when you renewed early the extra time was added on the end but the rules changed on that after Brexit transition. My passport expires next August but is not going to be valid for a holiday next week

Kids ones last 5 years so look at the expiry date

So your passport expires before the expiry date? Is this a thing from other countries or a British thing?

With adult ones you need to add 10 years to the start date rather than look at the expiry date as some passports got extra time added and those extra months are no longer valid. You may then need to take away 3 or 6 months (depending on the country you are visiting) to know if you have enough time left to travel on it.

@Kinsters, in the past, extra months (up to 9) got added to some passports making them valid for more than 10 years. As part of brexit you cannot have a passport that is valid for more than 10 years so those extra months are now discounted. That's why you need to look at the issue date rather than the expiry date

Yes that's what the thread was about the other day. Someone's husband and children got waved through passport control and she was turned away. This would also have been us next week if I hadn't read that thread. The soonest appointment we could get for a Fast Track passport was 2nd Sept so our holiday is much reduced. I should have known better. I think it is a UK thing since Brexit.

This is crazy... why hasn't it been more widely publicised?? Or letters sent to those with 10yr+ passports. It's outrageous!

Right so I know I'm ok until at least 2022. That is scary to think that the expiry date isn't even the right date,
So I have another question 😃 if my Ds got his when he was 12 would he get an adult passport when he renews his even if he was 17.

Adult passports are from age 16, so yes.

He can still travel on a child passport at 7 though. DSs were using theirs until they turned 20 😂

Oh is it 16 for an adult passport, for some reason I thought it was 18. So will he have to get a new one because he's turning 16 even though his won't run out till he's 17? I didnt get my first passport until I turned 20 so don't know the procedure for kids etc ☺️

He can use his child's one until it runs out, even though he'll be over 16.
