I've kept a skinny legged spider in my house to eat the big scary ones..... it didn't work!

Hate this time of year because of the big black spiders. Anyone else spotted one yet?

Don’t say it doesn’t work!
I’ve left every singly (terrifying) spindly one I’ve seen, they could be walking all over me in my sleep, not seen a fat black one as yet. I thought it was a bit early, they usually move in when it gets colder.

TheCanyon · 15/08/2021 20:15

We live beside some woods and get millions of the wee buggers, doesn't really bother me but dd10 is terrified of them. One year it was so bad we bought and set off a flea bomb, worked a treat.

sealedwithX · 15/08/2021 20:17

I was hoping we wouldn't get them for a month or so ( or not at all)

Well one spider can't eat all the big ones around! You need to leave all the spindly spiders!
Also next year book on the friendly spider programme. Changed my life.

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 15/08/2021 20:18

August is the start of spider season.

KittenKong · 15/08/2021 20:23

Great. I am the wee beastie catcher around here. Looking forward to chasing the critters around the place!

Spongeboob · 15/08/2021 20:23

Nooo, I've allowed several spindlys to live and named them, after giving them strict instructions! They'll have to go if they won't save me from the big buggers!

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 15/08/2021 20:26

Yeah we had a big black one in the house yesterday. I've been so nice to the daddy long legs ones, letting them live wherever they wanted in the house. I feel horribly let down.

KittenKong · 15/08/2021 20:26

Are we talking Jenny long legs? Or the grotty fat buggers with legs like black fingers? Even I don’t like those ones.

MyMabel · 15/08/2021 20:27

I haven’t seen a big house spider in maybe 2 years which is around about the same time I decided to stop killing the spindly ones!

It works!

Ozanj · 15/08/2021 20:28

Borrow a cat. I did that to get rid of mice once and she got rid of the hairy spiders too.

IncessantNameChanger · 15/08/2021 20:28

Oh, I find they work very well but I'm borderline infested. I never remove any of themand I only hover their weeds up if I'm sure the owner isnt going up the Hoover too!

I did take a good year to get to point of a fair in every room.

I dont mind them as they are quite slow and sedentary unlike the giant house spider or wolf spiders

Didiusfalco · 15/08/2021 20:29

Yep, saw one of the house spiders yesterday and I’ve kept loads of cellar spiders Sad. It was a big one too.

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 15/08/2021 20:32

I've left all the spindly legged ones... today I discovered there's one in the downstairs toilet that's eating the other spindles... hes got a collection of 3 sets of legs in his corner. I feel bad for my lack of protection.
On the other end of the scale I have no flys which I hate 😀

TheCaddieisaBaddie · 15/08/2021 20:33

I had one in the bedroom last night, fast bugger it was and I swear I count see the hairs on its legs.

BlueButterfliesAndPurpleStars · 15/08/2021 20:38

I wish I hadn't read this! It's bringing back horrible memories from a few days ago!

DD2 started screaming like she was actually being murdered. She was lying on the floor and one of the big black monsters had crawled on her face!! Then with all her moving and flapping ended up on her back!

Was a truly brave mum moment for me to calm
both her and her sister, find a plastic tub to scoop it up and place it outside.

It was pretty late at night and I stayed up an extra few hours as I genuinely was worried a neighbour might have called the police to report someone being murdered.

Found another one yesterday hiding in the dirty laundry. Wasn't quick enough with that one and saw it scoot under the sofa. Haven't told the DDs! And hoping the cats get it before it gets us.

LoveFall · 15/08/2021 20:46

One of the benefits of downsizing and moving out of a big drafty 100 year old house is losing the giant spiders.

I used to spend three months of the year warily scanning the floor for them. I swear they run toward you. One that raced across my arm and pillow, then down behind the bed permanently freaked me out about spiders in bed.

The dog was useless. Lying on the floor, open one eye and watch giant spider heading towards beloved mistress. Close eye and go back to sleep.

sealedwithX · 15/08/2021 20:51

What method do you all use to remove them? I rely heavily on my dp and would like to prove to my dc that I can take care of them myself.
The jar and card method seems good but what if they are on a bed or in clothing. That doesn't work too well.

No taruntulas big black jumpy fuckers as yet.

Lots of creepy spindlies shaking in their shoes if I disturb them.

Not sure which I hate more...

itcouldhave · 15/08/2021 21:30

A big house spider walked over my face one night and it woke me up. I found it next to me on the pillow when I switched the light on.

RoseAndGeranium · 15/08/2021 21:36

Yes, I’ve already seen two in our house. It’s old and a bit crumbly so this isn’t a huge surprise. I hate them and hoover them up if I get a chance. Otherwise I am throw (not very good but very heavy) books are them. I know a lot of people think this is terrible behaviour but most of those people are happy enough to seat mosquitoes just because they find their bites irritating. Well, I’d rather get bitten by a mosquito than crawled on by one of those hateful house spiders so I don’t really see the moral difference.
The spindly ones do help. I’ve seen them capture and destroy the big buggers. I have hordes of them all over the house.
To the poster who got crawled on in bed: oh god, that’s my nightmare. I once pulled back the duvet to find one sitting in the middle. Can’t get into bed between July and November without a close inspection now.

RoseAndGeranium · 15/08/2021 21:36

Wow a lot of typos in that post. Swat not seat. Books at them. Etc.

This is my worst nightmare.

I try to convince myself that my four cats eat them all and that there are none left.

CyberPixie · 15/08/2021 21:44

I live on the edge of the countryside. Every 6 months I spray indorex around everywhere. Barely seen one since and I used to get rid of at least 8 a day from my house.

If this works it may save my sanity and my marriage.
