Toasters. Why do they not have lids?

Just that really Grin

However clean your kitchen, there isn't really anything else I can think of that you just leave open and uncovered, never wash or clean (except for the occasional decrumbing) but still put food in.

You can buy covers. Like tea cosies for toasters Grin

TyneTeas · 14/08/2021 22:28

Even in the 70s when just about every household object got something knitted or crocheted on it, toasters remained uncovered

So true- literally thought that today 😂

TyneTeas · 14/08/2021 22:29

But I did not know that!

Was really wondering why they don't just come with them

Well now you've pointed this out I will absolutely need to find myself a toaster cosy crochet pattern Grin

KittenKong · 14/08/2021 22:30

I have a fabric place mat over mine.

GU24Mum · 14/08/2021 22:30

I remember my parents had a cover for theirs ...... and I've just had a look and you can still get them!

MrsPumpkinSeed · 14/08/2021 22:30

This reminds me of the difference between protestant and catholics with protestants keeping their toasters in the cupboards.
Very wise if you think about it Grin

Ha! My northern Irish mother in law was bursting with pride when I started keeping our toaster in a drawer when it wasn’t in use!

She couldn’t turn me into a church going baker, but she obviously knew she had made some impact with that one small thing…

AlecTrevelyan006 · 14/08/2021 22:35

why are toasters never big enough to toast a whole slice of bread, rather than 90% of it?

CrystalMaisie · 14/08/2021 22:43

My mil has a quilted fabric cover for her toaster. I keep mine in a cupboard, we don’t use it every day.

VenusTiger · 14/08/2021 22:46

Bit dangerous OP - imagine a thread falling into the toaster and then causing a fire.
You'd have to wait for the toaster to completely cool before putting the cosy back on too.
The toaster burns any dust or bits anyway so I don't really see the issue.

That's because the Protestants need the room for their traybakes...
VenusTiger · 14/08/2021 22:47

@Sparechange that's interesting - my NI MIL keeps hers on the worktop - I'm going to have to quiz my husband now 🤔

TyneTeas · 14/08/2021 22:49

I was thinking more of a wooden or metal lid with blocks underneath that fit into the slots to keep it on rather than fabric, in as much as I had thought about it when I first posted.

That they would be designed to have some kind of cover that they would come with.

The idea of a fabric visit was an afterthought

OP posts:
KihoBebiluPute · 14/08/2021 22:51

Any kind of cover would be a fire hazard surely? Of course you'd never deliberately intend to set the toaster off with the cover in place but accidents happen and sooner or later there would be a hot toaster plus flammable cover setting fire to the kitchen.

soupforbrains · 14/08/2021 22:51

@VenusTiger it is specifically Protestant NI people. Not Catholic. So that could be relevant.

But yes it made me think of that too.

TyneTeas · 14/08/2021 22:52

visit? How badly did I type cover for it to autocorrect to visit?!

OP posts:
VenusTiger · 14/08/2021 22:54

@TyneTeas a metal lid on an electric toaster Shock - noooooo! Wink def. an accident waiting to happen for me - I can be a clutz sometimes

roundtable · 14/08/2021 22:54

Mine lives in a cupboard when not in use. But I hate stuff on the sides. Kettle and coffee machine only.

VenusTiger · 14/08/2021 22:55

@soupforbrains they're not Catholic, that I know for sure

minniemoll · 14/08/2021 22:57

@AlecTrevelyan006

Put it in sideways, that way it all gets toasted.

Thank me later.

Maireas · 14/08/2021 22:57

When I stayed in Borneo we had to put a fabric cover over the toaster otherwise the little gekkos would fall in. Poor little things would get accidentally toasted!

mafted · 14/08/2021 22:58

Mine gets a vacuum after use and goes into a drawer.
