Toasters. Why do they not have lids?

Just that really Grin

However clean your kitchen, there isn't really anything else I can think of that you just leave open and uncovered, never wash or clean (except for the occasional decrumbing) but still put food in.

@mafted - what denomination does that make you?.

mafted · 14/08/2021 23:01

Posted that too soon. A family member got hurt after a lighter got knocked off a shelf and into a toaster, then exploded when the toaster was put on.

TyneTeas · 14/08/2021 23:01

I did not know that toasters could be a shibboleth.

And have never contemplated having to check for geckos before use!

@TyneTeas

Even in the 70s when just about every household object got something knitted or crocheted on it, toasters remained uncovered
I vividly remember toaster covers

There were everywhere

Toasters. Why do they not have lids?

Having seen a photo of dead mice 🤮inside a toaster, mine is covered with a tea towel overnight. Not that I have mice, but you can't be too careful.

imacuddler · 14/08/2021 23:09

How can you crazy people keep it in a cupboard. I can never get all the crumbs out of mine.
@AlecTrevelyan006 you are putting the bread in the wrong way. It goes sideways.

TyneTeas · 14/08/2021 23:10

Was around in the 70s and don't recall ever seeing one in anyone's house growing up. Maybe I just didn't realise they concealed a stealthily disguised toaster

If you need a cover you are clearly not eating enough toast.

Chasingsquirrels · 14/08/2021 23:13

I have NEVER seen one of those quilteds toaster covers.

I've had a gecko in the fridge, but not the toaster.

I just bang mine upside down occasionally to get the crumbs out.

My mind is boggling at putting them away in a drawer or cupboard, ours gets used more often than the kettle (apart from when DP is here) as the dcs and I don't drink hot drinks.

I buy cheap 4-slice toasters that take 2 x 2 slices side by side, but then just put 1 slice in each slot but on their sides so the whole of the slice gets toasted.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 14/08/2021 23:16

According to the MIL, that's because you clean it to death after every slice and then put it back in the cupboard before you can eat the now stone cold slightly dried bread with a scraping of the nastiest low fat spread on the market.

We had a gas cooker with an eyelevel grill and granddad had a range and open fire so it didn't even occur to me that was how some people made toast. Or that they could even think of calling it toast in the first place.

TyneTeas · 14/08/2021 23:19

Oooh buttering bread then toasting it under the cooker grill. Is like fried bread

AColdDuncanGoodhew · 14/08/2021 23:21

Plain bread never fits in a toaster without having the crusts cut off and they’re the best bit!

SomethingChief · 14/08/2021 23:25

Instead of having a lid maybe it would be better if toasters were designed to lie on their side, so you'd slip the bread in horizontally and then dust wouldn't go in the top. ?

TyneTeas · 14/08/2021 23:28

Geckos could still get in if they were on the side.

And you might have a hot side on the bench, depending on how cool wall your toaster is

They might also not toast as evenly, even with the grabby cage, the bottom may be closer to the element

Had missed the post about a lighter falling into a toaster last night

They definitely need lids!

Go low carb, saves all this toaster stress!

But 'toast'

Maireas · 15/08/2021 14:13

That toaster cover is brilliant, Fleetwood Raincoat! I'm tempted to get one, even though I'm no longer rescuing frazzled geckos.

Maireas · 15/08/2021 14:14

A low carb diet?? The very idea!

Hen2018 · 15/08/2021 14:18

Mine has no cover and lives on a shelf of my kitchen trolley thing so nothing should fall in it. Whether that’s displaying my devout atheism, I couldn’t say!

Ohshittt · 15/08/2021 14:18

@mafted Monica Geller...... is that you?

ChevreChase · 15/08/2021 14:20

I wondered about this too with the knife block - the gaps aren't big of course, but after a couple of decades, a fair bit of crap must have gathered down those slots.

LordOfTheThings · 15/08/2021 14:23

My mother in law keeps a place mat on top of her toaster, the teapot lives on top of that and she places teaspoons all round the teapot, it's completely bizarre. Like a kind of kitchen buckaroo.

Maireas · 15/08/2021 14:40

Maybe it's a shrine
