My best friend, I used to go to her house most nights and the fridge was full of M&S ready meals...curry's, lasagne etc. Must've cost a fortune but I'd never seen a ready meal before my mum always cooked from scratch, they had 3 kids, 2 adult sons and a daughter. Her mum used to go to the butchers and bakers every Saturday. Soup was always in a tin. Mental I think the amount they must've spent on food. My folks worked every hour they could but I always felt like the poor relation. Their dad was always looking for a pot hole to fall down !! Where there's blame there's a claim 😬

A motorbike, in the living room. Huge bright green Kawasaki just parked up between the dining table and sofa.

Coffeeonmytoffee · 14/08/2021 22:46

I went to a friend's house when I was 8 and it was utter chaos. My house was messy but this was a whole other level. We had to climb over layers of stuff to get to the sofa. No carpet was visible. The stairs were lined on both sides with things and you walked down the tiny strip in the middle really carefully. My abiding memory is of random things on top of the shoes, papers, boxes and in the hall there was a cello - just laying on top of this waste high piles of crap. Everyone behaved like this was all completely normal. I knew it wasn't normal but I thought it was quite cool.

Drunkenly went to a pub friend's flat. In her bathroom... so many butt plugs. There must have been about 30 in there. All shapes and sizes.

careerchangeperhaps · 14/08/2021 22:53

Growing up, I went to a friend's house for tea and you had to ask for the toilet roll before using the loo. It was rationed (one square for a wee, two for a poo). Really weird!

pheonixrebirth · 14/08/2021 22:53

Going for Sunday dinner at my friends house and her mum put a plate of sliced cucumbers in vinegar on the table along with the gravy boat. I've never seen or heard about cucumbers in vinegar before or since. Just weird???

annacondom · 14/08/2021 22:55

Not quite what you're asking but we went to look at a flat to buy and there were tenants there who obviously didn't want the flat to be sold. They were lounging about watching TV while the estate agent tried to show us round, and the place was filthy. But the worst bit was the bath - it was full to the absolute brim with black water. Heaven knows what was in it. Very odd.

Could someone please post the link to the Reddit page? I’m intrigued but can’t find it.

A large heavy looking ceramic luminous green pig as a focal point, staged below a hole in the ceiling which suggested it may have fallen through and landed there.

Phenixrebirth, you’ve just reminded me af my granny’s house! She always had sliced cucumber or onions in a bit of malt vinegar with sugar to put on the salad. The classic half a boiled egg, spring onion lettuce type of tea. With bread and butter, yum!
We had a stuffed alligator on the stairs which may have been a bit wierd. But he was nice to sit on.

IncludeWomenInThePrequel · 14/08/2021 23:02

Life size clowns. Two 'sitting' posed at the dining room table, and another two lying on the double bed holding hands.

Thought I was gonna be murdered in that house and sewn into a clown suit.

Peregrina · 14/08/2021 23:03

My dad always served up cucumbers sliced and in vinegar. He was from Preston if that is relevant.

DrFoxtrot · 14/08/2021 23:03

Rice pudding with jam (or sultanas) is a totally normal pudding Grin

VenusTiger · 14/08/2021 23:03

@ColdTattyWaitingForSummer

I know it’s not actually that odd, but going to a friend’s house for tea and it being served as soon as we got in after school. We always had ours at half past six, when my dad got home, I’d never met anyone who ate so early before.
I'd say you and I are the only ones in the (MN) world who ate at 6:30 (when our dad's got in from work) and ate together at the table - I thought I was the only one! My mom-friends will make 2 dinners - kids eat at 5 and in bed by 7/8 - no chance of that in my house - my son has always been a late sleeper like me.
DrFoxtrot · 14/08/2021 23:03

Sometimes I used to mix the jam into the rice pudding to turn it pink.

Kanaloa · 14/08/2021 23:06

I once went to a colleague’s house as was giving her a lift to a weekend course. Her husband had made six cups of tea and lined them all up on the worktop. I asked if he was having family over but no, he just made all his cuppas in the morning then when he wanted one he’d heat it up in the microwave. I questioned if they tasted the same and he said ‘yeah you need to give them a stir though before you microwave them, just to get rid of the skin.’

Lillipops · 14/08/2021 23:06

@careerchangeperhaps I think you win 🥇

GrandmasCat · 14/08/2021 23:07

I had a friend who ate all the cartilage in chicken legs as they all did in her house.

But the one that weirded me out was a girl I met in sixth form who said they had always watched porn films as a family. She didn’t see anything wrong with it Sad

TrueRefuge · 14/08/2021 23:09

@IncludeWomenInThePrequel WT actual F???? Are you serious???

Where did the clowns go when the parents went to bed? And did you eat dinner with the clowns, or were they moved?

Just, so many questions!

An obvious one being, do you now have nightmares about clowns?

Kanaloa · 14/08/2021 23:09

The coloured mash is quite cute and whimsical though. I might steal that to make the kids laugh.
