Royal Mail left my parcel in the bin!

Realised today that DS’s birthday present was taking a while to arrive so checked the tracking info, to find this photo! Fortunately it had been delivered the day after the bin collection so I was able to retrieve it.
What has come over my postie? I am fine with the usual red card telling me to collect from the sorting office. There was no card through the door telling me it had been “delivered” to the bin.

The thing I had ordered was out of stock everywhere and the vendor only had one left, so if I hadn’t found it before bin day I’d never have got another one.

Does anybody have any idea why RM would train their staff to do this? It can’t be unofficial because the pic was posted on the RM website.

This happened to us once too, but that was a courier.

You can complain?

With Royal Mail we are registered as 'return to depot' I think as we have lots of neighbours who work shifts etc and once a parcel goes into their houses it can be days until you catch them!

HaveringWavering · 13/08/2021 11:43

I don’t really need to complain as, fortunately, I got it back. I’m completely bemused as to the thought process though.
It was in the recycling but as it was a cardboard box my husband had tipped a load of other recycling in top of it without realising it was an un-opened parcel.

I did complain as I don;t think it is an OK thing to do with my parcels.

PaperMonster · 13/08/2021 13:32

Ours does that - but in the recycling bin. He knows when bin day is! Am ok with it.

But do you get a card through the door telling you it is there @PaperMonster?

Also, our bin day sometimes changes without warning as we don’t need to put our bins out- the bin men take them from our front gardens. So the council can send the lorry on a different day without having to warn us.

Ours does this all the time, I'm grateful as I don't want to go to the sorting office to collect it. You get a card through the door.

Disneycharacter · 13/08/2021 14:59

Must have forgotten the red card. Ours leaves it in the bin but always with a note

Chihuahuacat · 13/08/2021 15:06

I’m fine with it - the postie isn’t stupid enough to put it in the bin if the bin has clearly been left out for collection, only it’s sat down the side of our house where the bin men wouldn’t collect it.

I’m fine with it, I hate going to the depot.

ny20005 · 13/08/2021 15:42

You do need to complain or they won't stop doing it

NameChange74567 · 13/08/2021 15:53

Ours does this, but they put it in the recycling bin. It was annoying at first but now I know that's where they put things, I check there regularly when expecting something.

PaperMonster · 13/08/2021 16:13

@HaveringWavering yes, he pops a card through. Yours obviously didn’t.

MoreAloneTime · 13/08/2021 16:15

Ours often pops a card saying it's been delivered to number 32. You go there, they don't have it so you go home and then it's in the recycling bin. Why not just do a card saying that?

NigellaSeed · 13/08/2021 16:24

When we moved and met our postie he offered to leave parcels in a recycling wheelie when we aren't in. I said no thanks. Gross.
