If you're still up at this time, do go outside and look up at the night sky.
If you're lucky enough to have a clear sky, as I have here in Hampshire, you're almost guaranteed to see shooting stars tonight. They're coming at about one every 30 to 90 seconds where I am.
It's such a mild night, no breeze, no moon. Nigh on perfect conditions for sky viewing.

I've come indoors now after having spent about an hour lying on a sun lounger and gazing up at the Milky Way, with just the local owls for company. Beautiful and calming.

Envious! Clouds here :(

LavendulaAngustifolia · 13/08/2021 00:45

Oh of course it's the persieds isn't it. Shame is raining here in Wales. Hopefully it'll clear up by tomorrow.

FakeFruitShoot · 13/08/2021 00:46

DD and I have just got back from looking at them. We saw 4 in 25 minutes so not quite as good a "hit rate" as you OP but lovely all the same.

Pascha · 13/08/2021 00:51

I've just come. Inside from watching with ds1. He's a bit upset because he didn't see any. I saw 3 but he missed them all. I said we could try again tomorrow night if it's clear though I know it will be past the peak. Hopefully he will catch one or two this year.

Ah, sorry, I know how that feels! This is the first Perseids for years that we have had the right conditions here. Don't give up on them just yet, they'll be visible for a few more nights. Fingers crossed that the sky clears where you are.

I'm feeling very nostalgic and a bit sad. I used to sit up late with my Dad on the deck of Mum and Dad's lake property in the interior of BC. We would watch the Perseids and solve all the world's problems.

I really miss him.

Also sleeping on the beach with with our two young kids who are all well and truly grown up. Remembering "There's another one! Wow!".

Enjoy everyone.

CrochetyCrochet · 13/08/2021 01:21

Thank you, OP.
You reminded me.
Just spent a lovely few minutes looking up at the skies with D who got out of bed to join me. The best ones I've ever seen.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 13/08/2021 01:47

Aww lovely. I can see three stars, to be honest I think one of them might be a plane Star

Seeingadistance · 13/08/2021 01:47

Thanks for the reminder, OP. Bit too much cloud here, but I had a lovely walk next to the sea and up a wee hill. And I met an owl!

MargaretThursday · 13/08/2021 01:48

We were out for about 3 hours. It's a tradition for us, we take duvets out to the trampoline and lie there and watch the sky grow dark and then spot them (and all the planes that go over too).
Started with quite a lot but fairly faint, but by the end we saw some really bright ones. Not as frequent as some years, but definitely worth doing.

TheWindRises · 13/08/2021 01:52

Which direction? Are they still there? Smile

ShitShop · 13/08/2021 01:55

Thanks for that! I just went out in the hot tub and floated for 20 mins looking up at the sky. Quite a bit of light pollution here so not as easy to spot them as elsewhere, but I saw 3, one of which was a real belter!

ShitShop · 13/08/2021 01:56

I’ve only just come in and one of them was just as I came in, so I’m sure there are still some about TheWind

TheWindRises · 13/08/2021 02:00

Ok I’m putting my coat on! Is there a particular direction that’s best?

Shellfishblastard · 13/08/2021 02:00

Oh I did not know this - I am hopeless with things like this. Will it still be visible tomorrow evening or is it only tonight? (Excuse my ignorance)

We are glamping in Scotland and the sky was beautiful earlier, very clear. Wish I had paid more attention!

I’m sure there is. But I’m not sure which way that is or how it relates to my garden Grin. I just looked directly up and they caught my eye. Potentially to the east but I could be wildly wrong!

@shellfishblastard

Yes, they will still be visible for a few nights more. Last night was the peak, so there may not be so many, but if you get a clear night tonight then it's definitely worth staying up to take a look.

Me and Dh were in the hot tub marvelling at What a clear night it was and looking at the stars and I saw what I thought was a shooting star followed by about three more then I saw a huge one!! And realised it was a meteor shower I also saw a blue fireball it was amazing!! I've never seen anything like that before I knew nothing of perseids ( until I came in and googled ) I'd have stayed out there all night but it clouded over I hope tonight is clear I know we have passed the peak but hoping to spot some more!!

Shellfishblastard · 13/08/2021 23:52

Wow we’ve seen a few tonight - maybe 6 in half an hour! Fabulous thanks

Hen2018 · 14/08/2021 00:58

We’ve been watching them most nights for a fortnight. They’re as their peak now but will be around for sweeps days yet. Then you get the Geminids and the Leonids.

To be fair, you get shooting stars every night, if you sit out for long enough!
