What do you use to record live TV?

We've just canceled our Sky subscription. It's overpriced and we hated Sky Q, plus we already have Netflix and Amazon Prime. However I'd like to still be able to record live TV and watch things back on the usual channels. I think there's probably some sort of box you can buy that does this? Bonus points if it could make use of the satellite connection that's already there!

You can get hard drive recorders for either Freeview or Freesat - Freesat would make use of the satellite connection, we use Freesat now.

I have a Freesat HD box. No monthly fee, just the initial purchase of the box and it connects to the dish. I can record one channel and watch another at the same time

Is there a reason why you can't just stream instead of recording?

CarolinaWeeper · 12/08/2021 18:09

@BarbaraofSeville no real reason other than I like seeing what's coming up on the TV guide and choosing things to record that way.

I use our DVD recorder box. Often record live TV to watch later. Can very easily set it record a whole series - v useful.

Bonus is scrolling through all the ads.

We only have FreeView, not Sky or anything else.

It’s called a PVR and I think you can get freesat or freeview versions. Available from Argos, Amazon, John Lewis etc etc. Common makes include Humax and Panasonic.
