11month old no clapping or pointing

Hi All,
Just wondering if anyone else had a late clapper on their hands. My DS is nearly 11 months and showing no signs whatsoever of wanting to clap or point. He very occasionally waves although never on cue and never in response to 'hello' or 'bye bye'. I try showing him what to do and sometimes manually move his hands for him so he can get the gist of it but nothing.
I'm trying not to get to ahead of myself but I am a little worried about my boy having a cognitive delay. I have also read that children with ASD in some cases don't gesture... (I know I'm being paranoid).
Any advice would be great x

My little girl is one very very shortly and started waving properly yesterday. We have never had a clap. But she is doing other things. What about your little one? We panicked when she wasn't doing these things but noticed she was doing other things.

My daughter didn't clap until she was over 14 months but could unscrew lids at 10 months (loose ones! She was a way off helping with jam jars Grin). When I expressed concern to the paediatrician at her 1 year check that she hadn't clapped, he said she obviously didn't want to yet! I'm sure he's absolutely fine.

Don't worry.
Babies have their own ways of expressing themselves. My son didn't clap until 12 months and waving was on his terms.
According to nursery he's advanced but it's normal to have mom niggles.
Speak to your HV if you're worried.

It's lack of pointing that can be an indicator of ASD I believe, but even then it's not a concern unless they aren't doing it by 16/18 months.

I had my DS's 1 year check when he was 11 months and I remember he wasn't pointing or using any words apart from mama. The health visitor wasn't unduly worried as he was meeting other milestones. That very evening he pointed at one of his toy cars on the other side of the room, said CAR and crawled over to it! Grin

He didn't clap until about 16 months although he could hold a block in each hand and bang them together before that which "counts" as the same thing I think. He didn't wave until a bit after that. He's 20 months now and never stops pointing or waving, and has 30+ words, so I think he's doing OK.

Thank you for the reassurance. I will wait til our 12month visit to see if the GP has any concerns. It's so hard not to worry

Hi @Katewillows1 can you pmease give any update? TIA

Katewillows1 · 10/08/2022 23:01

@Mas05
Hi Mas, my son is now nearly 2 years old and I'm happy to report a big waver and clapper.
I was a bit pre-emptive with my worrying. I just continued to show him how to clap, wave, point etc and eventually he just picked it up. I would say he mastered these gestures by 13 months.
Pointing is the most important gesture as it indicates shared enjoyment when they point at something interesting and look back at you.
It's amazing to watch them master this x

Don't sweat it. I swear these milestones are absolute bollocks.

We have a bright 3 year old - at least two months behind every milestone. Now we have twins. Everyone told us the girl would be way ahead and she is. And then we have a lovely boy who on paper is the slowest of all and under checks accordingly.

I would bet my house he'll be the deep thinker - some babies just take time to get stuff right.

Thank you ladies for your response. @Katewillows1 I am happy about you baby boy and relieved after hearing positive response. Hope so my son will also soon show these gestures as he isnt waving and pointing at all. He is clapping but that is just random clapping. Not on command or copy.
