Do you have a Mattress Topper?

GingerBrod · 11/08/2021 10:41

I have just returned from a glorious holiday where I've been sleeping on a super king-size bed which was the most comfortable thing I've ever laid on.

So last night when getting back into my double bed I was shocked by his close my DP was to me and also how uncomfortable the mattress was! I've woken up sore and irritated but determined to do something about this.

Buying a new bed is out of the question for now but I thought I'd pop into town on my lunch break and get a mattress topper.

I'm blown away by all the options, I've clearly been living under a rock! Feather, alpaca, cotton, memory foam?!

They look promising but expensive so I wanted to ask whether you had a mattress topper, what kind it was, where it was from and whether you'd recommend it?

TIA

I have a feather mattress topper on my mattress. I bought it from Dunelm years ago.
I absolutely love it. I just give it a good shake when I change my bedding.
In nice sunny weather, I hang it outside to ' air ' the same as I do with duvets and pillows.

Enko · 11/08/2021 10:52

We do yes and after we got ours i bought all the kids one.

Only buy memory foam if you aee comfortable being hot sleeping (been hard as I am going through menopause) dh however loves it and you do sleep a lot better.

ikea has good ones.

M and S memory foam with a cooling fabric. Wasn’t cheap but really nice.

Elouera · 11/08/2021 11:23

MIL has a memory foam one about 4cm deep and its utterly useless, because the mattress is just so soft and terrible. Unfortunately, it will do little if your current mattress is already old and saggy. We have a thicker one on a new, spare room mattress which is better than the MIL's one.

From my experience, the thicker it is, the more comfortable it 'might' be depending on what its made from though. Also, with the added bulk, you might need to also buy sheets which are deeper, so they will fit.

@GingerBrod This is the current debate in our home, OH wants a mattress topper whereas I think we need a new mattress altogether. We have a king size bed (I know you said it’s not possible to change beds but definitely do in the future if you can as it’s more spacious for two adults compared to a double - you aren’t glued together). Like you, when I had a quick google I was baffled at the options, I don’t quite know where to start if we go with a topper, not sure what I’m looking for?

Parentingdilemmas · 11/08/2021 11:49

@Elouera - See I also think we need a new mattress and a topper would just be trying to put a plaster on the issue but won’t be the solution.

canigooutyet · 11/08/2021 12:00

I have a memory foam topper. Best investment I have ever made. I have joint issues and was constantly waking up in the middle of the night in
excruciating pain and very stiff and would often be an hour or so before I could move properly. This rarely happens now. It's also got a cooling thing and I no longer wake up dripping in sweat.

Bought it last year from Amazon in their Black Friday deal and it was a bargain. My dc's often sleep in my bed when I'm in hospital and will be hitting the sales this year for one.

NotRainingToday · 11/08/2021 12:05

I've got a fab one from John Lewis. Absolutely not memory foam (too hot) and it was super expensive, about £400 I think, but so so comfy.

Panickingpavlova · 11/08/2021 12:08

Op I have a good firm to hard mattress which I like but... It needs softening I do have a jl topper of feathers and it's OK but not as good as the memory foam ones I've been on in hotels.

It's the depth factor that's put me off though, I got dc one and wasn't deep enough. In also put off by the heat factor.

SirenSays · 11/08/2021 12:16

I have a memory foam one, it's a good few inches thick so it weighs an absolute ton but it's well worth it, it's so comfy.

Megan2018 · 11/08/2021 12:19

I have a very expensive feather and down from Soak and Sleep (superking). It is delightful. Bought pre DC when we had money for such things.
I took it off for co-sleeping and was so happy to have it back. The cat and I are very comfy.

DH has his own bedroom 👍

revampneeded · 11/08/2021 12:30

I also have the Soak & Sleep down and feather one. It's absolute luxury.

Datsandcogs · 11/08/2021 15:32

I inherited a zip and link bed in a cool, and expensive to heat, house. I needed a topper to cover the zip and link between the mattresses. I bought a down topper to try and improve the warmth in bed, now I can’t sleep without it!

HelenHywater · 11/08/2021 15:36

Yes I have a feather one too. I tried memory foam but it was just too hot. I was in a sea of sweat every night. I have recently invested in a gorgeous expensive mattress too, having had cheap ones my whole life. So comfortable. I love my bed.

Elouera · 11/08/2021 16:19

If you are planning a new mattress in the future, and as a short term fix, buy a feather duvet and use that on top of the mattress, with a sheet over the top. It might be enough to be more comfortable, without the expense of a topper.

Okay, now I feel really stupid because your comment has reminded me that I have a 13.5 tog duvet packed away in the loft!! I'm going to get that out and try it before buying any toppers! It's synthetic, but I'm hoping will have an impact regardless.

@GingerBrod- Let us know how the duvet trick goes. I hope it makes a different to you tonight.

SummerTimeIsLovely · 11/08/2021 17:13

Thank you! I’ve just ordered a hypoallergenic one for our king size bed. On sale from Soak & Sleep. Hope it’s good!

cannaethink · 11/08/2021 17:27

I’ve got a memory foam one on top of a firm (non memory) foam mattress. It’s amazing.
I only find it sweaty if I use a synthetic or feather duvet. I bought a wool duvet and haven’t been too hot since.

tomorrowalready · 11/08/2021 19:17

Like cannaethink, I got a foam tooper last year after being sure I would hate it due to hating the feel of foam rubber. But it has a cotton cover and has proved very supportive. I now sleep comfortably on my back after always being a side sleeper and don't move around. It is warm but I am a cold sleeper in a cold room so helps me relax. Too much really as I am always reluctant to get out of my bed now. I had already tried an old duvet and a feather topper and a thin Slumberland topper which helped but did not give the same support.

GingerBrod · 13/08/2021 13:42

Elouera

It was very soft and cozy!

We slept on it (almost) two nights and gave up.

First night was fine, I think we were tired. DP complained of neck pain in the morning.

Last night it was just too hot. It's a synthetic fiber duvet, as is our top one, so maybe that was the issue. Either way, I ended up yanking it out at 2:30am then went to sleep on the sofa.

I feel disappointed but also considering getting a firm mattress when we upgrade to a king size bed and adding a natural topper, and getting new pillows to boot.

@GingerBrod- thanks for the update. What a shame it was too hot though.

MoreRainThanAnyYet · 13/08/2021 13:47

I tried a synthetic one from Dunelm. It was comfortable, but oh goodness, the heat! Gave up after a few sweltering days and ordered the Soak and Sleep wool one instead. DS can take the other one to university when he goes.

Komandoo · 13/08/2021 14:57

I have this panda momory foam one which is really confirtable and does not get hot at all
