Daydreaming here... anyone bought a bolt-hole in Italy?

I am fantasising about the lovely holidays we have had in Italy... the weather, the food, the countryside....

How impossible is it to find a little place of my own out there? Wouldn’t it be lovely...

No idea but let me know how you do it and I might do the same too! What’s happened to our summer this year??

Debetswell · 11/08/2021 09:11

I wanted to but eventually bought in SW France as my minimal french was better than my non existent Italian.
Tuscany is the place but not cheap.
Emilia Romagna may be cheaper.

We used to fantasise about it, but have decided it's impractical. I am hoping we can winter in Italy when we retire, but we will rent somewhere.

KittenKong · 11/08/2021 09:45

I don’t know Italy beyond Tuscany all that well sadly - I’d probably end up in the equivalent of Royston Vasey!

I was literally having the same day dream this week... Puglia for me please! But also don’t speak Italian and decided it wouldn’t be practical (sob)

KittenKong · 11/08/2021 09:51

My Italian is rubbish - funnily enough my Latin is slightly better.

My parents have. It's a lovely little house attached to a castle in a rural village. It's approx an hour from the airport, the sea and the mountains for skiing. In non apocalypse times they go at least twice a year, once for heat and once for snow. They have loads of nice restaurants nearby and choose somewhere different for dinner every night. It's fab.

KittenKong · 11/08/2021 09:56

Ooooh lovely! What’s the history of their little paradise?

Unless you are EU citizens, you would only be able to spend up to 90days in the EU total per year. Bolthole time plus any other trips for work or leisure. We wanted a place in the EU country my DP is from but Brexit has made it impractical.

Serenissima21 · 11/08/2021 10:09

That second one looks like they built it themselves! I'm actually in Italy but dreaming of a bolt hole in the mountains. Trouble is, everywhere I fancy going is much too expensive.

@Berkeys isn't is 90 days in every 180 days? So essentially 6 months of the year. I'm an EU citizen but DH is not.

I dream of this too. I love Tuscany but would also love a place in France. My French is much better than my Italian! Unfortunately my DH has 'motorhome' dreams for our retirement (which is a long way off!) - I'm much less keen!

Ok - party at mine. You’re all invited:
