How often you you redecorate a room?

I'm decorating the living room, it definitely needed doing, but since it's only been 6 years since I last did it and that seems like no time at all.

How often do you refresh a rooms decor?

Those of you who buy new things each year what do you do with the old bits?

Probably send to landfill. I didn’t know fast furnishings was a thing

DappledThings · 11/08/2021 13:21

Moved 2018 and decorated everywhere over the next year. Wouldn't imagine doing so again for another 10 years or so bar the DC bedrooms as they will grow out of current colours.

I had no idea people redecorated very often at all

Skybluepinkgiraffe · 11/08/2021 13:33

My skirting boards were last glossed when we moved in in 1998. I keep looking at them and thinking I should do them again. All other rooms have been painted a couple of times I think. Last done 2013. Probably need to think about refreshing but I'll do it one room at a time.

We have lived in our house since 1994; the kitchen, 2 of three children's rooms ,hall and stairs have been done twiceeverywhere else has been decorated once. Stairs and landing need doing again but we are hanging on until we can arrange and afford some work on the bathroom as there are likely to be scuff marks.

Every 10 years?

HopeYourHighHorseBucks · 11/08/2021 15:06

Change style completely? I would say 5 years. Depends if I get it in my head that I want a complete change. Freshen up lick of paint sort of thing, once a year. DP and friends are in the trade so takes them no time.

If I had to get in a decorator or couldn't do it myself, i probably would go soft white and change furnishings every couple of years.

HopeYourHighHorseBucks · 11/08/2021 15:08

My bedroom hasn't been decorated for over 10 years. I'm still happy with it and dont feel the need to change the walls etc. I've replaced the curtains once and added a large mirror in the last 10 years and dont plan on changing it any time soon.

MrsPumpkinSeed · 11/08/2021 15:30

@MrsPumpkinSeed you buy new accessories every season?

No. I pick things up and look after them. Just change things like cushion covers etc. Have them for many years. Also for my birthday etc I would ask for homewares.

Alieninmybody · 11/08/2021 15:34

Do you mean just painting or a full overhaul?

I would paint high traffic rooms every 2 years and aim for every 3 for the rest.

Full overhaul, new curtains, rugs, flooring etc. Every 6/7 I think.

MrsFlinch · 11/08/2021 16:01

Depends if it needs doing or I just fancy a change but usually a minimum of 5 years but as long as I’m happy with it then will stay the way it is for as long as possible.
Bathroom got decorated for the first time last year since moving in (15 Years ago)
Living room was last done about 6 or 7 years ago, (apart from changing the curtains) still looks fresh and clean so no major hurry to do it although ceiling could do with a freshen up.

I know someone who changes their decor with every new trend. Sometimes after a few months It’s like she doesn’t know what her personal taste is so just follows the trend!

Couldn’t be doing with that!

Very doubtful. The amount of stuff being sold or given away in local Facebook pages would indicate otherwise.
MeanderingGently · 11/08/2021 22:37

Every 6 or 7 years, certainly by 7 years the whole place needs redecorating. Sometimes I have moved instead!

My mother would redecorate the downstairs every single year, it was part of spring cleaning. All the white walls, gloss etc. was repainted, along with rigorous cleaning of everything. Upstairs was every 2-3 years, I recall.

BrieAndChilli · 11/08/2021 22:38

Depends on the room.
We lived in the last house 12 years and it had magnolia walls everywhere
Lounge - repainted and Upcycle’s furniture/new assessories etc about 9 years ago
Kitchen - painted walls and painted wooden kitchen cabinets about 6 years ago
Study - never
Our bedroom - never
Kids rooms about once every 3 years as they grew/tastes changed

New house we have done loads to and properly redecorated every room, lots of new furniture etc so will be years before we think about re-decorating bar the odd bit of touch up paint.

Listener2021 · 11/08/2021 22:44

Been here 25 years. The living room has been repainted 3 times. Same with the hall and stairs. The curtains are 25 years too- they were a big cost at the time but they dry clean and come back like new. Kitchen and bathrooms maybe every 2 to 3 years, but they are mostly tiled.

Decorating is such an upheaval, even a couple of coats of emulsion. It's not like the adverts where they slap it on to music.
