Feral pigeons.

Does anybody know why these birds are prone to suddenly taking flight, flying round in circles for minutes at a time then all landing in the same spot ? It all seems rather pointless and achieves nothing from my human perspective. I have to admire their coordination, speed and sudden changes of direction made without colliding with one another but I don't know why they do it. My nearest flick are airborne on such a sortie just now.

Wood pigeons and collared doves also take off very quickly but then just fly directly from A to B with no fannying around, unlike their feral cousins.

To be fair to the local feral pigeons, they don't always return to their launch point after a few minutes of frantic flying round the houses. They sometimes land on another building about twenty yards away. One of them gets to choose and the others dutifully follow.
