Who does DIY at midnight? So selfish

The house attached to us was sold about 3 weeks ago. It was in pretty good condition but the new owners have decided to gut it completely and they have employed three “builders” ( I think they are friends) to work on the house since buying it. They haven’t moved on.

We have endured constant noisy DIY for three weeks. Think wood saws, grinders, electric sanders. Yesterday they spent all day drilling into the party wall.

It’s unbearable. But it gets worse. They do this all night. We have three young children and we work. Last night at 1 am we’d had enough & went round and asked them to stop.

We explained that none of our children, or even us, can sleep while they use electrical machinery at 1 in the morning. They seemed confused that we could hear the noise. It’s a terraced house!

They did stop but started up again at 7 this morning, no school holiday lie ins for us.

The new owners are rarely there but my DH did mention the noise to them when he saw them a few days ago. “Was it noisy” was there response?

It’s unbearable but having looked up online DIY and noise apparently there is no law to stop people doing domestic DIY in there own homes after a certain hour.

I am tired, depressed and miserable.

Look on your local council website, there should be a section for noise. Mine says under Building & Construction Sites: "As a general rule noisy work from construction sites should usually only disturb you Monday to Saturday 7am to 7pm. There are some exemptions to this and other restrictions which may apply."
