My son found a toddler

My 12 year old son went out with his friends around 4.30.

He came home at 6.10, carrying a toddler in just his nappy, already on the phone to the police!
He'd found him wandering around our estate by himself in just a nappy (it's windy and rainy here) He tried to ask him where his mummy or daddy were but the toddler has just grabbed him and clung to his leg, so he's pulled out his phone, dialled 999 then picked up said toddler and brought him home so that he had somewhere warm to wait for the police.

I got a blanket for the little one, and got him warmed up. He was very scared bless him, but receptive to having a cuddle and letting us help him have some water. (My youngest is 6, so no sippy cups)

Police turned up just now with social services and took him with them. Theyre going to try and find his parents and take care of him, have him checked over etc.

The police and the social worker massively praised my son and said he was immensely brave and sensible to do what he did.
He took the officer out and showed him exactly where he had found the toddler and gave as much info as he could about what happened when he found him.

I hope the little one is OK, and glad he's safe with social services now.

I am also immensely proud of my son. He's so amazing. I would have panicked at that age and knocked on the nearest door for help.
Hes just jumped into action straight away and decided to get him warm and safe.

Well done to him, great presence of mind, and he did absolutely the right thing.

HerRoyalRisesAgain · 08/08/2021 21:21

@ActonSquirrel brave because he's only 12 and took decisive action to help a toddler on his own. I couldn't have done that at 12. I'd have panicked and not known what to do.

@ActonSquirrel what a contribution to the thread 🙄 what was the point in that bitchy comment?
OP you should be so proud of your son 👏

Well done your son.

Did the police come immediately, they did when my DP found a child, they were there very fast. Otherwise It would make me wonder what sort of home he has escaped from if no one had reported him missing by the time social services arrived Sad

Oh that poor baby. Sounds like he escaped from somewhere. my D.S is 18 months and can use the lift in our appartement block. If I left the front door open, he’d totally toddle out and take the lift downstairs.

Thank god your son found him before he toddled onto a road or into the arms of a predator.

My dad's little brother was hit by an ice cream van. My nana was washing up and could see outside. She noticed a commotion and went to see if she could help. Someone told her to go back in the house and a neighbour physically picked her up to take her back in. She was confused because she thought all her kids were in the house preparing school uniforms, bathing, in bed etc. They didn't want her to see her 6 year old son lying there dead. He was an identical twin and the priest at his funeral said in his sermon this was because God wanted 2 angels but decided to leave one on earth. My granddad told the priest to fuck his God. Its why my grandparents moved from Glasgow to Manchester. To escape the gossiping of the neighbours who put the blame on my grandparents and then judged my granddad for his outburst in church at his sons funeral.

Absolutely. Don't let Acton trying to be a contrarian for the sake of it distract from how great your DS was.

My 5 year old was an escapist. He managed to open the door and bolt out when I was in the kitchen luckily neighbour caught him so didn’t go far he was 2 at the time bolts were promptly put on door. Also when 2 he managed to escape from his childminders and run down the road the childminder had the audacity to say I need to talk to my 2 year old, I put her right and said no you need to be watching him she had helpers as well so lord knows how he managed that one! We moved him not long after trust had gone.

Well done to your son.

Did the police come immediately, they did when my DP found a child, they were there very fast. yeah, they were very quick about it, I dint suppose they can mess around when it's a little one.

I wandered off as a toddler once - my dad was supposed to be watching me and had had a few, fell asleep on the sofa and I opened the door and walked down a very busy road. Thankfully it was my own mother who found me (she was on her way home, noticed a tiny child walking at the side of the road, pulled over and realised it was her own daughter Confused. Well done to your son OP.

Divebar2021 · 08/08/2021 21:31

Why are people so snidey?

I was involved in a case with a child of about 2/3 found wandering around a common ( known for prostitution/ drug use) in the middle of the night in just a nappy. The parents didn’t miss him until well into the morning. Apparently the child came downstairs and got a chair to open the front door and let themselves out. Do I believe that ? Nope but not my call. If someone had called for an update I wouldn’t have told them much… your DS did a good job. Well done him.

MadKittenWoman · 08/08/2021 21:32

I once found a 1-year-old walking down a busy road. I stopped the car and took him by the hand, intending to call the police. I saw some builders on a nearby roof watching and asked if they knew where he lived and they pointed to the house. I took him there and the person who came to the door was mortified, and said that he belonged to her sister who was having problems and lived a few doors down. I still wish that I had got SS involved.

HerRoyalRisesAgain · 08/08/2021 21:33

@ShesAPeachSconeBob how awful. Sad

Your son is a star OP, I would probably not even have noticed at that age.
FWIW I have both lost a toddler and found a toddler. On separate occasions.
I lost mine when he realised how easy unlocking the door was. He let himself out, the breeze from the open door woke me up and I found him
three streets away with the dog. I was a quivering wreck. It was a pedestrianised estate so virtually no cars. Still I was lucky.
A few years later I found a tot wandering on the same estate. I picked him up and wandered around til I found a panicked parent. No mobiles back then.

Well done to your son. Ignore the troll hunters, clearly nothing better to do with their Sunday’s

PosyBoo · 08/08/2021 21:40

Your son sounds very mature for a 12 year old! Well done to him for being so grown up, kind and responsible. You must be very proud 😊
