My son found a toddler

My 12 year old son went out with his friends around 4.30.

He came home at 6.10, carrying a toddler in just his nappy, already on the phone to the police!
He'd found him wandering around our estate by himself in just a nappy (it's windy and rainy here) He tried to ask him where his mummy or daddy were but the toddler has just grabbed him and clung to his leg, so he's pulled out his phone, dialled 999 then picked up said toddler and brought him home so that he had somewhere warm to wait for the police.

I got a blanket for the little one, and got him warmed up. He was very scared bless him, but receptive to having a cuddle and letting us help him have some water. (My youngest is 6, so no sippy cups)

Police turned up just now with social services and took him with them. Theyre going to try and find his parents and take care of him, have him checked over etc.

The police and the social worker massively praised my son and said he was immensely brave and sensible to do what he did.
He took the officer out and showed him exactly where he had found the toddler and gave as much info as he could about what happened when he found him.

I hope the little one is OK, and glad he's safe with social services now.

I am also immensely proud of my son. He's so amazing. I would have panicked at that age and knocked on the nearest door for help.
Hes just jumped into action straight away and decided to get him warm and safe.

What a wonderful testament to your parenting @HerRoyalRisesAgain

I don't know why people think this might be untrue. My friends first foster child came to them after being found wondering the streets in just a nappy. Obviously there was more to it than that but still

HerRoyalRisesAgain · 08/08/2021 19:37

@Billybagpuss no, they didn't. Hopefully he has some very worried parents rushing to his side as we speak.

Big well done to your son, what a sensible, caring lad!

HerRoyalRisesAgain · 08/08/2021 19:39

Thank you everyone. Hes definitely due a treat, he's amazing. He said he's glad the roads weren't busy and that he'd not wandered further down to the main road. Lucky he found him when he did.

This definitely happens, sadly. Weird comment.

What a sensible young man. I was hopelessly clueless at 12!

RoseGoldEagle · 08/08/2021 19:41

Your son sounds amazing OP. That poor little one, hope he’s ok. There are either some absolutely distraught parents somewhere who will be so grateful to your son (am hoping it’s this) or some pretty shit parents that are annoyed at the inconvenience of him getting lost.

Needapoodle · 08/08/2021 19:41

Well done to your son. You done good there op.

Pipsquiggle · 08/08/2021 19:41

well done to your son. I am guessing the social services won't keep you updated. Was the toddler found close to your house?

HerRoyalRisesAgain · 08/08/2021 19:41

There are either some absolutely distraught parents somewhere who will be so grateful to your son (am hoping it’s this) me too. I really hope he's got somewhere safe to go home to.

Well done your son.
I hope you get to find out what happens. I would need to know he was ok.

HerRoyalRisesAgain · 08/08/2021 19:42

Pipsquiggle just at the corner of our street, so not far at all. Poor little love must have been terrified.

Your son did amazing. Hope its just a case of the little one having managed to slip out the house and nothing more sinister.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 08/08/2021 19:44

What a lovely young man your Ds is. I don’t think I’d have known what to do a 12.

Unfortunately I know of places where babies do roam the estates in only a nappy. It’s very sad, but it happens.

Glad the police came quickly and SS have the LO in their care. They may well know who’s LO he is.

Emmelina · 08/08/2021 19:45

Well done kiddo!
This sort of happened to us a few years back, was walking my own kids home from school and a toddler was running around all over the road. He’d obviously been inside and slipped out of an unsecured door as had something from the kitchen in his arms! Managed to grab him, no easy feat as the kid was like lightning and the more I chased the faster he went! and tracked down his house with another member of the public. It would definitely have been a tragedy within minutes had we not seen him.

Byheckythump · 08/08/2021 19:45

Glad he was so good in a crisis. I would be proud, too x

Mazblue86 · 08/08/2021 19:48

What a star! Good effort.

HerRoyalRisesAgain · 08/08/2021 19:48

@Emmelina I'm glad it worked out well for that little one.

What a brilliant kid.

Sadly this happens and often the parents are unaware that the kid has escaped due to drink/drugs. As a social worker I've seen it quite a lot.
