My sister will be bereft. I don't think she's been outside for a fortnight

Me! The contrast between the low key closing ceremony and the joyous scenes from Paris was so poignant. Here's to better times ahead and thank you to Tokyo for such a brave performance as host city in the worst possible circumstances.

RedRosie · 08/08/2021 13:59

Yes ... Me too. I think it's the whole situation rather than the ceremony itself. I hope the Paralympics goes as well as possible too.

the80sweregreat · 08/08/2021 13:59

The Paris hand over was very well done.
I think they will throw the book at it and it'll be like London was

Velcrodog · 08/08/2021 14:00

Tokyo have done bloomin' well in hugely difficult circumstances. Hats off to them!

And that sequence from Paris was amazing!

TobyLicious · 08/08/2021 14:00

Yes me, only half watching but it suddenly dawned on me that this virus has actually affected the whole world, (obviously I knew this!) But just seeing no audience and a toned down ceremony it just hit me how nothing has gone untouched from Covid19

FelicityPike · 08/08/2021 14:02

I had a tear at the French โ€œred arrowsโ€ going past the Eiffel Tower.

Norugratsatall · 08/08/2021 14:12

No not just you OP! I've welled up a few times. I think it's been an incredible few weeks and a successful games despite the pandemic. Looking forward to Paris in 3 years when I'm hoping the worst of Covid will be behind us.

I loved the Japanese folk songs in particular.

Wonderful stuff!

Closing the fire down :(
So beautifully done.

Misssugarplum12764 · 08/08/2021 14:42

Not at all. Iโ€™ve loved these Olympics. Always do (even attended a fair few events in 2012!) but wasnโ€™t expecting to enjoy these as much but theyโ€™ve seemed extra special. Such lovely athletes I think, plus just seeing how much it means to them!

TheWindRises · 08/08/2021 14:51

โ€œWould it be ok if I came home to you?โ€

And now Iโ€™m gone!! ๐Ÿ˜ญ

I'm sad it's finished.

2012 I sobbed when they handed over to Rio. I was a bit hormonal though. I remember crying to DH "don't let them take it!" and him trying very hard not to laugh at me!

AnnieRich · 08/08/2021 16:22

I have spent most of the last two weeks welling up. We needed this so much. Congratulations to Tokyo and all the competitors.

Disneycharacter · 08/08/2021 16:42

Its been weird but great. So lovely to see the Paris piece.

Letsnotargue · 08/08/2021 16:58

Me! Iโ€™ve loved watching every bit of the Olympics Iโ€™ve seen. Itโ€™s been such a lovely distraction from the doom and gloom to see all these amazing people achieve what theyโ€™ve worked so hard for. The disappointments for Team GB have hit me hard though!

It was Max Whitlock at the very end showing his gold medal to his daughter in the airport that actually got the tears going.

Velcrodog · 08/08/2021 17:17

I felt sad when Clare Balding said that Tokyo had put all the effort in and yet very few inhabitants of the city were able to watch.

Contestants weren't allowed to go sight-seeing and hardly any sports fans from overseas were able to attend, so they didn't get the usual boost in tourist revenue either. At least they have some top class sports facilities now but it was rotten luck they had to put in so much effort - and endure all the stress of the delay - for very little reward. I imagine they have earned the gratitude of many young athletes though.
