Did anyone else struggle having pets for the first time, and did it get better?

I grew up with pets, but after I left home I didn't want any. I remembered my childhood home as quite chaotic and not that clean.
Then I had my own kids, and thought I should give them the opportunity to have pets. I thought that although I prefer a quiet, calm, clean house, everyone grows to love their pets and it would be worth it.
So we have had 2 kittens for about 6 weeks now and I am not enjoying it.
For me it is extra work, mess, smell. They came with fleas. I hate the smell of their catfood. I hate the litter tray. I don't like extra beings pestering me.
They are as good as gold and really affectionate. The kids love them. They have just been neutered and will be allowed out soon. I hope that changes things.
Will I grow to love them? Hope so.

I waited for 30 years to get a dog. Almost 3 years ago I got one, seemed like a hasty decision but had actually been simmering since I left teaching almost 7 years ago.

He changed our lives in ways I can't begin to explain. Like you said, mess, smells, behaviour, neediness.

It has taken all this time to adjust, he is currently testing my patience again, but I am far less bothered by it all now. It doesn't seem like a chore... and he is worth it 😊

Thank you. I am hoping they will be worth it in the long run.
