Being so stressed out by music that you can't remember your PIN is quite extreme. Have you always struggled to concentrate on basics/simple tasks if there is lots going on in the background, or is this a new thing?

EastWestWhosBest · 06/08/2021 21:40

I have supermarket shopped almost entirely online for the last 10 years as I can’t be doing with supermarkets.
That’s because I’m a lazy bastard though, not music.
I don’t think Waitrose has music.

EffOrf · 06/08/2021 21:46

I would go to Waitrose, it's very calming in there, I haven't noticed any music playing

cantgetmyheadroundit · 06/08/2021 21:50

Morrisons play the best music. And the Co-op, always good in there Grin

findingabra · 06/08/2021 21:52

Yes, it’s just you.

The music is at a normal volume and customers enjoy it. I love to hear music as I go into shops; it creates an atmosphere.

If it were silent it would be very depressing.

AuntieDolly · 06/08/2021 22:04

contactless?

enjoyingscience · 06/08/2021 22:10

Sorry you were upset, but it is unusual to be so affected by background noise. I can’t even remember if the last shop I was in had music or not, and I think most people would say the same.

Noise cancelling headphones sound like a good plan for you.

RavingAnnie · 06/08/2021 22:13

I am really noise sensitive and have never noticed the music in supermarkets I must say. I think noise cancelling headphones are the answer for you though.

Fucket · 06/08/2021 22:19

I’m not a big fan of large shops or malls. Too much bright light and so much noise in every direction. It’s hard to concentrate although I’ve never forgotten my PIN because of it.

You have my sympathies though, I don’t know what affliction I suffer from but sometimes the only way I can counter it is to play my own music through my earphones and because I am very familiar with the music/lyrics it allows me to concentrate on that song and nothing else.

Noise cancelling earphones are probably better but probably pricier.

Mrbob · 06/08/2021 22:25

Interesting. I live overseas and the supermarkets are quieter. I found British shops play music VERY loud when I was last back (obviously a couple of years now...) and hated it

moonbedazzled · 06/08/2021 22:30

I was in Morrisons today and they were playing fantastic music (although I'm old and I have poor taste!) I was dancing away in the bread aisle. Bought scones and iced buns which I shouldn't have. It must have been the music. Damn their eyes! OP, I'm coming over to your side!!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 06/08/2021 22:35

It's unbelievably loud recently and I've complained in store many times, I have not idea how the staff put up with it. It's beyond intrusive now not just background noise.

idontlikealdi · 06/08/2021 22:47

My local Tesco express has started playing really loud music, the regular big tesco doesn't. Wouldn't make me forget my pin though, and I have Apple Pay for back up anyway.

uktrippin · 06/08/2021 23:15

What was the song? 5,6,7,8...🤣

This is exactly why supermarkets play music. It’s been proven shoppers buy more in shops where music is playing.
As for forgetting your pin and music being too loud, I get it, but I’m autistic.

thelegohooverer · 07/08/2021 00:00

Check the websites of local stores and see if they have an autism friendly hour - in some stores they lower the lights and turn off the music for customers with sensitivities. You might find it more pleasant.

I don’t mind , or even notice music most of the time, but if my sinuses are infected I get very sensitive to music, particularly in big shopping centres where it bounces off hard surfaces and the acoustics are awful.

Yes, I was in a good mood. I was moving with the groove. I felt thinner. Carbs held no fear for me. The absolute b*@#&!%s. 🤬

KickAssAngel · 07/08/2021 00:07

I can't cope with getting petrol when the pump plays"entertainment" as you put your card in. I find too much noise really hard. But I don't love in the UK so Tesco won't care what I think.

ApolloandDaphne · 07/08/2021 07:19

I too love Morrisons music and I like that I can have a little sing to myself under my mask.

I forgot my pin after the last lockdown. I was in the hairdressers and I was putting in what I thought was the right number. My DH paid in the end and asked me what number I had been using. Turns out it was the TV PIN number I was inputting! I had been watching way more TV than I had been doing shopping!

It is actually one of the reasons why they play music Wink

If you're relaxed and enjoying yourself you're far more likely to spend money.

Woeismethischristmas · 07/08/2021 07:31

I’ve forgotten my pin. Online buying and normally just having to tap your card gave me a blank spot. The garage gave really nice about it and gave me a pink slip and I had to return and pay for petrol within three days.

RampantIvy · 07/08/2021 07:32

This crossed my mind about the OP.
I know that playing background music has been shown to increase customer spending. I doubt very much that the staff love it, especially at Christmas when all the songs are played on a constant loop. It would drive me round the bend.

Also, shop music is never loud IME.

EmergencyHydrangea · 07/08/2021 07:35

Do you have sensory processing issues? I do and I find it difficult to function in certain ways when there is a lot of noise around
