Please tell me about Costco large cakes

Hi,
I'm hoping someone may have had the large Costco cakes that can be personalised and can let me know how they are taste wise.

I haven't ever actually had any of these cakes but the pastries, sandwich platters, lemon cake and cookies have always gone down well that I have bought before.

I need to buy three large ones for a work colleagues retirement. As I need to feed approx 130 people.
The website says feeds 48 but I think these things can sometimes be conservative so I thought 3 cakes would work.

Any advice appreciated!

They're synthetic but nice. Not fresh cream and very light.

CovidPassQuestion · 06/08/2021 19:23

IMO they taste how they look! They are too sweet and OTT for my tastes (but I'd be happy with Victoria sponge tbh Smile
They are a good size, but you'd definitely need two for 130, probably 3 tbh.

I wouldn't get one for someone I really loved and cared for, but some people (my children!!) like v sweet cakes.

SnitchyBitch · 06/08/2021 19:24

They’re really nice.
DC begged me to buy one for DH’s birthday recently but he doesn’t like cake all that much, one DC won’t eat it at all and the others eat like sparrows.
And I’m gluten free so I can’t eat it either!
But it is lovely, I used to eat it before I wasn’t so intolerant to stuff.

I think they're actually quite nice for the price, and a lot nicer than some much more expensive shop-bought ones I've had.

ScottyandWestie · 06/08/2021 19:25

Oh I'm not into super sweet cakes. Maybe I need to take a look at Marks or Waitrose offerings. It's not for kids, it's a mixed bag of twenties to sixties.

The chocolate one is delicious

ScottyandWestie · 06/08/2021 19:26

I thought three would cater to everyone well, I could get a chocolate one and a vanilla.

Iv had a few. I like them but they are sweet.

hartof · 06/08/2021 19:29

I think they're a crowd pleaser at a party. Chocolate is the best, or if you do get vanilla get jam.

Notthisnotthat · 06/08/2021 19:30

I've a sweet tooth and love cake but don't enjoy eating the Costco cakes. They are too sweet and synthetic.

Prefer a simple sponge from Tesco that you can add your own decorations too.

tabulahrasa · 06/08/2021 19:31

They go down really well with most people tbh.

But, contrary to previous posts - I wouldn’t get chocolate again, it doesn’t actually taste of chocolate.

Vanilla with jam is best.

Soontobe60 · 06/08/2021 19:32

We’ve had the chocolate one - they’re lovely for what they are.

namechange87682938 · 06/08/2021 19:34

I love them. I get the white one with just jam as a filling.

SquirryTheSquirrel · 06/08/2021 19:34

The chocolate one always disappeared quickly at work in those long past pre-pandemic days

Preech · 06/08/2021 19:34

They're very sweet and the frosting is kind of whipped almost. I grew up with super sweet birthday cakes Betty Crocker style, so Costco is right up my street. But my Scottish DH could go the rest of his life without one: he's a Victoria sponge with jam filling and a dash of icing sugar kinda guy.

ScottyandWestie · 06/08/2021 19:40

I know there's a few very sweet toothed people so perhaps they will be ok.

They really are a crowd pleaser, I've never known them to not go down well.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 06/08/2021 19:46

They’re incredibly sweet but strangely addictive.

JustLoveYourselfALittle · 06/08/2021 19:47

For a large amount of people I'd say fine. No matter where you'd buy cake you'd never please everyone.

Miraloma · 06/08/2021 20:00

I got one for my 40th last year as I knew I'd be having guests over the space of a week with lockdown.

I loved it and it's delicious and super sweet, here's some photos for a better idea?

My husband and son demand one for their birthdays! I don't love them (prefer Patisserie Valerie) but they're actually really good for the price.

AMCoffeePMWine · 06/08/2021 20:25

I don’t like super sweet, so if they have it I get the carrot cake. It have sweet cream cheese filling (tastes like cheesecake) , not the synthetic cream stuff like the others.

ScottyandWestie · 06/08/2021 20:51

Thank you @Miraloma
I think I will get a jam and vanilla and a chocolate one, I need three so might do a plain vanilla as the third.

This ^

Nobody is going to be doing a blind taste test are they ?
You can (as you have said) get different flavours and therefore most people will like one of them.
It sounds a great option for that many people.

ShakespearesSisters · 06/08/2021 21:22

I got 3 for my 40th party. 2 would have probably been enough. The 3rd ended up at work. Everyone loved it. As long as you don't get a side piece, or a corner (best bit in my opinion) it isn't too sweet.
