Please tell me about Costco large cakes

Hi,
I'm hoping someone may have had the large Costco cakes that can be personalised and can let me know how they are taste wise.

I haven't ever actually had any of these cakes but the pastries, sandwich platters, lemon cake and cookies have always gone down well that I have bought before.

I need to buy three large ones for a work colleagues retirement. As I need to feed approx 130 people.
The website says feeds 48 but I think these things can sometimes be conservative so I thought 3 cakes would work.

Any advice appreciated!

We love them! Honestly get three. People like them and the ones who don’t probably dont want any sort of cake anyway.
But I’d get two sheet cakes and one of the big round ones. Red velvet or carrot.
Under £40 for all three.
Big Costco fan 😊

They are lovely especially for the price. The icing can be overwhelming but that’s easy enough to not eat! I’m not a big sweet tooth and I think they’re lovely!

purpledagger · 06/08/2021 21:28

I think they are great for the price and a decent option for 100+ people.

I'm a massive cake fan but these aren't really worth the calories. The carrot cake, chocolate fudge and victoria sponges on the other hand are to die for.

FawnFrenchieMum · 06/08/2021 21:32

Honestly, I think they are awful! I love cake and have a really sweet tooth but I can’t stand these. I don’t know what anyone sees (tastes?!) in them.

RunAwayNow · 06/08/2021 21:35

They are LOADED with sugar. My dd had one for her first birthday and I sent some of it in to nursery. None of the babies would nap after they'd had it for lunch Grin. Apparently it was quite the afternoon.

I love them though. They're a bit synthetic but really tasty.

TheDoctorDances · 06/08/2021 21:35

I’m sure you’ve thought of this already but have you made allowances in case anyone is gluten free? We have one or two in our office and they often get forgotten about.

Lanaa · 06/08/2021 21:50

These cakes are awful. They used to be nice around 12 years ago, but they changed the recipe to the current super sweet, synthetic abomination and now they're horrid. The round cakes from there are much better.

Willow4987 · 06/08/2021 21:55

I like them! They are sweet but so light and yummy

You can get a plain one and then just add your own decorations to it also

AdditionalCharacter · 06/08/2021 21:55

Why not get a large vanilla with the persons name on, a chocolate gateaux and a carrot cake? And maybe scones for those who would prefer those.

The only thing wrong with those large cakes, you have a slice and say you'll never eat it again, and half an hour later you're looking around for another sugar fix.

ElizaDoolots · 06/08/2021 22:12

We got one for DDs birthday and I saw a lot of people sneaking into the kitchen for a second helping. We had about 30-40 people and easily got through one, so get 3 for your numbers.

ElizaDoolots · 06/08/2021 22:14

The round red velvet ones are really good too if they still do those.

CarolinaWeeper · 06/08/2021 22:16

They're definitely good for the money. I do find them sickly sweet but then again for that many people each person would only get a small piece anyway so that doesn't matter too much. I'd say do it.

drpet49 · 06/08/2021 22:19

I've a sweet tooth and love cake but don't enjoy eating the Costco cakes. They are too sweet and synthetic.

^It isn’t really a proper cake at all.

Parentingdilemmas · 06/08/2021 22:22

They are VERY sweet. It depends on portion size, if you serve everyone a cube sized portion it should do the trick but anything larger and it’s hit and miss depending on individual taste. It can be sickening if you aren’t into your sweet stuff.

ScottyandWestie · 06/08/2021 22:24

Thank you for all the replies, particularly to the poster reminding me about gluten free people, we do have a couple so I shall find a free from type cake from Marks for them.
I am now thinking two sheet cakes and maybe the large carrot cake, the chocolate and red velvet gateaux cakes are very sweet I've had both of them and too similar to the chocolate sheet cake.
Has anyone had the lemon or strawberry cheesecake? It looks good and possibly not
As sweet.

I bought the carrot cake and it was truly the most awful cake ever - the carrot was in chunks not grated, the cake was kind of loose crumbed but very wet and pasty, icing so sickly sweet and the whole thing tasted of chemicals. None of my family touched it and felt such a waste throwing a massive cake away.

ScottyandWestie · 06/08/2021 22:29

Oh no, I've not tried the carrott cake but it looks impressive. We have had the chocolate one and I did t really rate it though it was popular so possibly just me.

Mmmmm Costco cakes. They are all yummy. The rectangle ones also freeze really well 'if' there is any left over. (Even with all the icing etc it defrosts really well).

saraclara · 06/08/2021 22:33

Ugh. Seriously, I'm no food snob, but they're awful. Really synthetic and sweet. Just cheap and nasty and dry.

When we were all offered discount membership at work, it ended up that every staffroom birthday involved either costco doughnuts, or their sheet cakes. I'd far rather just have had some biscuits.

I'm not hard to please, but they're really grim.

Louloubelles · 06/08/2021 22:34

I love cake but hate the big Costco cakes. It doesn’t taste like cake at all.

saraclara · 06/08/2021 22:35

It isn’t really a proper cake at all.

Agreed. I've no idea what they make it with, but it tastes like a sugar and chemical mix.

LoveFall · 06/08/2021 22:36

I am in Canada, so maybe our Costco cakes are different, but we have had many at work and they were always just fine. They disappeared rapidly every time.

Wakeupin2022 · 06/08/2021 22:40

I think they are perfect for what you want.

I'm not a fan because they are too sweet for me, but I do still have a bit or two (Blush

Dh wanted one for his 40th and was disappointed when he didn't get one (he did but me being good wife organised a surprise party after a planned family lunch).

I told him explicitly that I wanted a cake from elsewhere for my party Grin

Bluejeanjen · 06/08/2021 22:44

I like Costco but we had one of their cake at a party. It was a white one and it tasted of synthetic cream and so artificially sweet. I don’t think the Americans are particularly good at sponge cake like this. You can’t beat a proper sponge cake like what Mary Berry would make
