WWYD. Holiday let stinks of cigarette smoke

Have arrived at holiday lodge to find that our non smoking lodge hired for the week absolutely reeks of smoke. Staff know this is the case and I've decided be what they can but it still stinks. Issue is that the site is fully booked, we have driven 6 hours to be here, booked several trips and meals in the area and a train journey from local station. Shopping delivery booked for tonight. No option of moving lodges. What would be a reasonable outcome to expect the site staff to do? They have given us a free drink so far. Sounds as if they have forfeited previous guests deposit but that doesn't help us. It is by no means a cheap holiday either. WWYD?

Does the bedding smell? The sofa cushions?

Disfordarkchocolate · 06/08/2021 17:18

I'd expect them to get in there and clean it. Carpets and soft furnishings can easily be cleaned in a few hours. That and an extra clean and a good air should help but I'd be fuming.

Maybe you should negotiate a partial refund, perhaps equivalent to the previous occupants' forfeited deposit?

If it’s that bad I’m afraid I couldn’t stay there.

Is there an air B and B or a hotel you could go to and see if the lodge people can thoroughly deep clean your lodge?

SometimesIFeedTheSparrows · 06/08/2021 17:23

If it's Forest Holidays I wouldn't expect much - last time we went we paid for early entry, but the cabin wasn't ready until 20 minutes before the usual check in, and then when we got in the cleaners had carefully turned each of the jizz stained sofa cushions around so it wasn't immediately obvious someone had wanked all over them it was

There was lots else wrong as well but they wouldn't even refund us the early check in and we didn't get an apology about the cum cushions either.

I would get them to try to get the smell out somehow. Have they tried at all? They should have used-

Prices candles do one that eliminates cigarette smoke.

Baking powder on soft furnishings and then hoovered off. All soft furnishings that can be removed replaced- they should have spares.

A powerful air freshener- I have Neutradol which eliminates rather than masks odours.

Ground coffee in a dish to absorb odours. Ditto baking powder.

I run holiday lets and would have done all the above before you arrived.

WWYD? Light up! Wink

DogsSausages · 06/08/2021 17:26

Personally I would expect them to pay for you to stay in a hotel, you specified non smoking, if they knew there was a smoker in there they should have deep cleaned and not rented it out as a non smoking lodge.

MissyB1 · 06/08/2021 17:27

You need at least 50% refund if you are staying.. Personally I couldn't stand it, I would feel sick with the smell. I would have to leave and insist on 100% refund.

dancemom · 06/08/2021 17:27

One night free / cost of alternative accommodation elsewhere while they do a deep clean.

Vile smell

Twatterati · 06/08/2021 17:30

Urghhhh, I feel for you as that will stink.

If you've no alternative but to stay then get as many windows open as possible and also see if you can get some of the Febreze fabric freshener (NOT the regular air freshener) as this does work and can be sprayed on carpets, curtains, soft furnishings etc.

If you use social media it's worth complaining, naming and shaming as this often gets better results more quickly than a face to face complaint. You should definitely get some sort of recompense so decide what you'd be happy with and start asking for it.

Kindlethefourth · 06/08/2021 17:31

Thanks all. I think they were hoping we wouldn't complain...........waiting to see what else they have tried to get rid of the smell and will then negotiate with main company (Hoseasons).

Is there another hoseasons site near that you can transfer to, keeping the previous occupants deposit doesnt help you at all, you arrived believing it to be a non smoking lodge.

Kindlethefourth · 06/08/2021 21:14

Thanks for all the helpful replies. No other accommodation available so we were offered a night in a hotel before travelling home with full refund or 50% off the total. Lots of effort made in the interim to clean and air the lodge. We accepted the 50% on basis that finding another holiday in area would be nigh on impossible. Very impressed in way it was dealt with.
