Is there a name for this and do you experience it?

Occasionally I will get a taste in my mouth and or smell a food that I have not eaten in a very long while, decades even!

No one around me is experiencing it so it’s not an aroma in the air but a definite taste and smell particular to me.

I suppose it could be a craving but it happens randomly with no rhyme or reason.

In the last few minutes I could taste Neapolitan ice cream which I probably haven’t eaten in thirty years!

I know there are olfactory hallucinations. I had that last year, no idea. I could smell smoke inside.

Maybe?

I have a form of synesthesia but not this one which made me Google.

No idea why links aren't working sorry search Lexical Gustatory Synesthesia

Yes. I'll sometimes get a 'taste' of something and then really crave it - a steak sauce we hadn't had for years, sweets, a sandwich ingredient.

I also have auditory hallucinations of music playing quietly somewhere, but apparently that's a side effect of my Ménière's disease & tinnitus.

Thank you. I had hear of synesthesia but thought it was only word associated based!

Interesting reading and I will research further.

I have this! I am epileptic though and it's linked to this. If it wasn't so disconcerting it would be very interesting Grin especially as when I am post ictal (period after seizure) I genuinely believe I am back in the past (eg living at my old address from years back and knowing the postcode etc even tho I don't "remember" it in RL normally!) I also believe my DC are little again sometimes. At these times I have no memory "beyond" the age I think they are - eg I am convinced DS is 8 and don't know anything of the last 12 years. I don't recognise my house etc.

Brains are so interesting and we know so little about them, I think.

I have had this since having Covid last year. I can't detect real tastes and smells, just these imaginary ones
