Trying to write a description for my new business but

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 04/08/2021 15:33

I don't know how Confused I've been trying to write it for the last 2 days but I open up the page and just stare blankly at the screen. Why is it so difficult to write about yourself and what you're offering? Confused Where do I start? Should I do an introduction about myself or just skip that and go straight to the businessy stuff?

If you met me waiting at a bus stop and we started chatting and I asked you what you did, what would you tell me.

Say the words and write them down.

Have the enthusiasm you would use to describe it to a friend or stranger.

ILoveShula · 04/08/2021 15:41

Something like

Oh I am a sole trader working as a home handyperson. I go to people's houses and do odd repairs for them.

...

Probably something like I run my own business building flatpack furniture for people who can't/don't want to. If I were to elaborate I'd go on to say that I'd been a SAHM for 10 years (since I was 19) and because my CV was so dreadful, no-one wanted to hire me. My husband pointed out that I enjoy and am good at doing flatpack so I could make a business out of it, so I did.

I'd PR that a bit - make it sound like a quality, rather than something you're doing because you can't find a job!

Where is the description for?

Mostly, people want to know what you do and who for.

So you help people to build flat-pack furniture in the XX area, so they get the convenience without the stress, or whatever. Keep writing and refining it until you hit gold.

Then if it's somewhere longer form, details on any insurances etc would be good, and some testimonials. But that'll vary depending on where this is for!

Hoppinggreen · 04/08/2021 16:00

I don’t think that the SAHM that nobody wanted to hire bit is relevant.
What you need is an elevator pitch.
I offer a service that helps people who can’t or dont want to build their own flat pack furniture by doing it for them in their own home

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 04/08/2021 16:05

@TakeYourFinalPosition it's for my Facebook page that I'm setting up.

@Hoppinggreen yeah, it's not the best angle is it? I've never had to really write anything about myself before so it's actually a lot harder than you'd think Confused

You come across as friendly, and are offering a stress-free solution to those with neither the time or inclination to fiddle about with screws and bolts.

Flatpack is great if you live in a house where for example, the stairs are narrow with low ceiling height, and someone might prefer a woman to assemble their wardrobe, or if you are single and living alone,ready-built furniture is too heavy and cumbersome for one person.

it is very hard to sell yourself. I can remember struggling with it because if I asked friends, they'd say something crap like 'you're a good cook' when a pot noodle is about my limit.

Now you really are good at assembling flatpack and can make it a solid piece of furniture.

Horehound · 04/08/2021 16:24

I think I'd put something like
These days we find it hard to juggle everyday life and when additional tasks crop up it's good to have a business you can rely on to take these tasks over and deliver them in a cost/time efficient manner...that's why I, at company name, have created xyz to opportunities to take over these tasks leaving you to enjoy your leisure time I'm a way that suits you.

Then a little bit about you and then more about the company and then links to each section of your site.

PieceOfString · 04/08/2021 16:31

Start with something snappy/brief like 'I turn your flat pack into furniture with you having to touch a tool or read any instructions.'
Then from there explain your service including what sort of customers might need your service.
So something like 'are you time-poor hate reading instructions, always have a piece left over...
Just make sure you proof read it before it goes live spelling mistake etc are really off putting.

ILoveShula · 04/08/2021 16:31

I would make it more informal, and use statements directed at the reader.

e.g.
Finding it hard to juggle everyday life when additional tasks crop up? Need someone you can rely on to take these tasks over and deliver them in a cost/time efficient manner?..

PieceOfString · 04/08/2021 16:33

Waffle is bad. Say what you do. Why hire you. Who should hire you.

MaybeWeShouldGoToEastbourne · 04/08/2021 16:44

“Flat pack furniture is great value but can be such a hassle - let us at (business name) take the stress away!”

You could even explain the value of the service with an example of the cost of flat pack plus build service vs. Ready built - this would highlight why your potential customers should use you

E.g Average pre-built wardrobe cost £XXX

Average flat pack wardrobe cost £X plus build service £X = £XX

Saving = £X!

Still cheaper than ready built but without any hassle! And turns the focus into the saving the customer makes rather than the cost of having you build the item

ShitShop · 04/08/2021 16:45

60 second pitch/elevator pitch:

What is the problem you’re trying to solve?

How will you solve it?

What are the features of your service and how do they benefit the customer?

What do you want them to do next.

Example:

“Don’t you hate it when you get home from your favourite Swedish furniture store, open up the box and see the 15 page instruction booklet with 250 pieces? All you want is a cup of a tea and a cinnamon bun, but now you have to start building it all!

Well luckily for you, I love building flat pack furniture. Introducing Flat Pack Hero - I can build your new drawers, cupboards and beds in the time it would take you to work out which one is flange B.

  • I can collect your flat pack boxes from XX stores
  • I build and attach safely to the wall any larger pieces
  • I will dispose of the cardboard and packaging responsibly (may be better not to do this, but just for an idea of services you might offer)
  • I also offer a customisation service painting and finishing etc
  • Prices start at £xx an item/hour so it’s a cost effective way of getting ‘ready-built’ furniture, but with all the design choices from your favourite stores.

So if you’re planning a room refurbishment and want the budget friendly convenience of flat pack without the hassle of building it, give me a call.

Might be shit, but that’s what I’m thinking!

Supersimkin2 · 04/08/2021 17:18

People are interested in what you might be doing to improve their lives, not your own. So hold off on your life story until the end - give examples of furniture you assemble with prices, and recommendations from real customers if you have them (not your husband).

Polkadots2021 · 04/08/2021 17:57

I'd say exactly what people want to hear...

'Love buying furniture but hate the nightmare of constructing it when you get home? Let me take the stress away completely. I'm your flat pack angel, ready to help. I'm friendly, competitively priced, love putting together flat pack furniture together & I always clean up before I go! Give me a call to bring the happiness back to choosing beautiful furniture for your beautiful home-I'm just a phone call or email away!'

Or similar Grin
