Nice treat Restaurant recommendations around Buckinghamshire/Oxfordshire/Warwickshire general area

Hello.

DH and I have a table booked at the Hand and Flowers in Marlow in a couple of weeks. It's our treat restaurant, we always go once a year.

However. I've just had a look at the menu and the prices have literally almost doubled in some cases. It's always been pricey, as you'd expect from a 2 Michelin star place and that's fine as I said it's a yearly treat. But the starters now range from £26.50 - £42.50, mains £58-87 and desserts are all £26.50. The food is bloody lovely there but I am not paying nearly ninety quid for a steak (especially when it was £50 pre lockdown). I get that places have to increase prices because they've been closed but my god.

Anyway, so we're looking for somewhere else nice. Can anyone send recommendations for places that are really nice but not too fussy food, not too formal and a little bit more sensible on the prices?

Hopeful bump for the evening crowd.

How about somewhere in Bray? The Fat Duck or The Waterside. Generally they’d be booked up months in advance I suppose but you could enquire?

I think The Ship in Marlow is meant to be good. (Hope I’ve remembered the right name and am not sending you somewhere that’s spit and sawdust)!

yodaforpresident · 04/08/2021 20:12

The Swan, Denham 😋

Yumsnet · 04/08/2021 20:15

The Ship is a pub rather than a restaurant/place to go to eat. I think you probably mean The Coach which is on the same road, it’s owned by Tom Kerridge 👍

The Fat Duck is Heston isn't it? I'm not sure I'm in the market for snail porridge! It's a shame because the H&F does amazing but fairly fuss free food (well I'm sure it's not fuss free to make but it's basically a really good piece of meat/fish, amazing sauces and beautiful veg) Which we like! But the prices are just getting too steep now. I've had their duck parfait stater several times over the years, it's delish. First time it was £16.50. It's not £10 more now for the same thing!

The Coach is the sister pub to the H&F. It's really nice but you can't book I don't think it's a turn up and eat place.

On the edge of your area, but Orwell's is lovely:

Sorry, that link is wrong, but just search for Orwell's!

Other side of Marlow bridge, if you like Indian food is Sindhu by Atul Kochhar.

We had the tasting menu and combined it with H&F pre-menu increases (which I’ve just looked up and are bloody shocking).

Could you do Sindhu for dinner and a cheaper set lunch at H&F the following day?

Blueuggboots · 04/08/2021 20:54

www.nuttreeinn.co.uk is great.

My favourite restaurant is in Warwick

www.tailorsrestaurant.co.uk

STUNNING! Very small restaurant but the food is absolutely amazing.

Parrotanne · 04/08/2021 21:37

Oh I did mean the Coach! Thank you @Yumsnet!

KittyMcKitty · 04/08/2021 21:49

The Coach is v nice but like all of the 3 Kerridge places in Marlow v expensive (and unless they’ve changed since COVID you can’t book) - it’s also v cramped inside. Agree regarding H&F prices have got silly (even pre COVID) - it wasn’t that many years ago they did the £14 set lunch!

I agree re Sindhu and it’s a fab location. The Vanilla Pod’s nice.

The Fat Duck is going to be pricier then H&F. There’s the Crooked Billet in Stoke Row or Shaun Dickens at the Boathouse in Henley. Or Le Manoir but that’s not cheap.

There are plenty of nice places to eat in Marlow but it depends whether you want a destination type restaurant.

TeaandHobnobs · 04/08/2021 21:53

The Beehive in White Waltham is nice - good food without being horrendously wanky

TeaandHobnobs · 04/08/2021 21:53

Caldesi in Campagna in Bray also awesome

BlackeyedPetitsPois · 04/08/2021 22:00

@Blueuggboots I definitely second Tailors in warwick. Beautiful food.

gurglebelly · 04/08/2021 22:02

The Artichoke in Amersham Old Town is lovely

Oooh yes, I second this

The H&F is great. But I balk at £87 for a steak.

I've had that dish. It's a beautiful fillet steak, some lovely chips, 2 onion rings and a bearnaise sauce. It's bloody yummy. But it is not worth £87!!! Confused

Either;

Olivier at the Red Lion in Watlington

or

The Mash Inn at Radnage (amazing tasting menu)

Second the rec for The Beehive in White Waltham.
