Go on, get in there, you already know that once you’ve done it you will feel brilliant about it....go, you deserve the feeling of what comes after.

TheChosenTwo · 03/08/2021 08:48

All very true. I will go in. To the changing room to drop my bag off and probably procrastinate in there for 10 minutes too!
Why am I so nervous?! This is ridiculous Grin

PT here. OP get your butt in the gym and out the car park (unless you're willing to work out in the car park Grin).

Your body is a work of the most mind-blowing and elegant, sophisticated biological design on earth, greater than any technology any human could ever design or construct. It's designed to run on exercise, good food and sleep or it will malfunction. So go get the exercise part ticked off!

Btw you look great without seeing you, you look great, don't be self conscious, everyone will be focusing on themselves and all trainers will be silently cheering on from the side lines (not judging).

Also if you start putting in some decent strength work it will boost your Testosterone and make you feel more confident and willing to take risks so thats always a good strategy to make you feel more confident, also if you listen to motivating workout music in the car it'll make you feel too hyper not to go in.
dontgobaconmyheart · 03/08/2021 09:26

Ahh OP don't be so hard on yourself, you don't need to 'grow up'. It's fine and normal to feel anxiety or feel self consciousness, it's societies fault for the pressures on us as women, that's not your own failing.

The only way out is through, it might not be fun but it'll be fine and eventually you won't even notice anymore because you'll be focused on the benefits instead.

HelloCanYouHearMe · 03/08/2021 09:32

I used to be you OP.

Get an induction booked to refresh your knowledge on how the machines work and maybe get them to create a programme for you to work to, if they offer that. Book onto some classes too - i do bodypump and spin (bonus being spin is in the dark, no-one can see you!)

Headphones on, focus and you'll be fine. Promise 🏋️‍♀️

TheChosenTwo · 03/08/2021 10:00

I’m back in the car, I survived, thanks for the virtual shove, I needed it!
I’ve never been the fittest but I’ve always tried to keep myself in half decent shape. We rejoined primarily for Dh who has an injury and can’t play football anymore but was really missing exercise.
I’m glad I went in but was a bit intimidated to do very much so just stuck to what I already know, there’s a few new things there that I was trying to watch people on but because of how the gym is laid out it makes it pretty difficult (although nice when you’re actually
On the equipment that lots of people aren’t just staring!).
I’ve commented on these threads before encouraging people that no one else is looking at them and everyone is just focussed on themselves but I suppose I don’t ever and won’t ever feel like I belong in the gym so will probably always feel a bit self conscious!

The do offer tailor made programmes but this is how I fell into getting a PT years ago and I find it hard to say no to being sold to Grin
I think I need to find a gym buddy.
I do feel really good for having gone but I know that I let myself down a little bit by not challenging myself too much however just getting through the bloody door was a challenge today so I’m letting it slide for today Grin
A big thanks to everyone for the encouragement, I needed it this morning and you were all right about everything, it was totally fine. I also managed to watch the women’s cycling pursuit, GB took silver to an utterly incredible German WR effort!
I’m taking the dc to the gym tomorrow for a swim and will probably be back there myself on Thursday.

Congratulations OP! Glad you enjoyed yourself. Maybe keep us posted about your progress in this thread! Have you got any fitness goals - a 5k run or to lift a certain weight?

TheChosenTwo · 03/08/2021 11:16

I’m running the London marathon in October!
I’m up to about 14 miles at the moment so still a long way to go but as i say, I’ve always tried to keep up a base level of fitness over the years for my own head sake more than anything else.
I’d just like to be a bit more confident at the bloody gym - I have no idea why I feel I don’t belong there Confused

I'm booked to rejoin today at 4 😱😱. Dreading it. We'll done op

TheChosenTwo · 03/08/2021 14:01

Hooray @MrsTaytodarling - are you in the SE?! Imagine if you were at the same one as me and we could go together!
Good for you Flowers

OP posts:
MrsTaytodarling · 03/08/2021 14:04

@TheChosenTwo I'm in Ireland so no chance of us together I'm afraid

TheChosenTwo · 03/08/2021 14:40

Ahh that’s a shame! Good luck for this afternoon, what prompted you to rejoin?

OP posts:
Letsnotargue · 03/08/2021 15:12

I tried to join a gym yesterday. Annoyingly they don’t put their prices on the website so after a nice tour and sit down chat it turns out they want silly money for a joint membership. If I was the kind of person who would go everyday and enjoy it then it might be worth it. But seeing as I sort of begrudge going anyway, knowing I’d paid so much money for the privilege would probably
put me off completely.

Well done for rejoining and going. Although if I could run 14 miles I’d probably decide I was fit enough and not bother. I have such a strange relationship with exercise and the gym. Do you have any advice for someone who would love to be fit but can’t quite be arsed?

TheChosenTwo · 03/08/2021 17:51

@Letsnotargue very similar sounding to the gym we rejoined! Bloody wanky pretentious place but it’s literally less than a mile from us at the end of our road and the spa facilities are lovely so it’s an easy choice.
We had membership for the whole family for years and gave it up because we’d got to the point where we hadn’t used it for maybe about a year Confused
If you know you can’t be bothered though I’d think again, there isn’t much that can’t be found on YouTube for things like HIIT workouts, weights workouts, yoga/Pilates stuff etc, all for free.
I’m not really fit, the 14 miles was the hardest and most painful few hours of my life and I walked a few times too, I’m most likely going to be crawling to the finish line if I even make it to the starting line.
But I really wanted to go and show solidarity with dh, he’s gotten really unfit and feeling crap about himself, we don’t really go together as we have 3dc and various ones are in and out at different times and the youngest isn’t able to stay home alone but it kind of spurs the other one on. It gets a bit competitive Grin

Bizjustgotreal · 03/08/2021 18:42

Ahh nice! London Marathon is notoriously difficult to get into!

Best of luck! I've done one marathon and I remember it being a case of one foot in front of the other, even if that means walking. I walked the last 10km I seem to recall

Letsnotargue · 03/08/2021 20:07

@TheChosenTwo thanks. I’ve got online stuff to do at home but thought I could do with a kick to get going again. Maybe I need to redo couch to 5k to give myself some kind of structure.

I get the feeling the gym we went to yesterday was ahead of the game when it first opened, but it’s showing it’s age a bit now and it wasn’t enough to wow my bank details out of me.

Good luck with your training for the marathon, and to your DH with his fitness journey.

TheChosenTwo · 03/08/2021 20:42

@Bizjustgotreal I have entered the ballot every year for about 10 years and was shocked to finally win a place!
Well done to you for completing one, I will only ever do one once, the training is an absolute killer.

@Letsnotargue couch 2 5k is what I started again with during one of the (many!) lockdowns. It’s quite a good plan and really breaks it down into small steps building up stamina. I’d definitely go down that route tbh rather than forking out in gym membership if you’re insure about how much you’d get out of it.
Ours has always seemed to be maintained to a pretty good standard and they have regular refits and update things so it’s all quite fresh.
Thanks for the good wishes, I’m hoping we can keep the positive momentum going!
