Things people say and you cannot believe they are actually serious...

.... this has been sort of baffling me for a few weeks tbh.

Out for lunch with a friend. She has just had her first grandchild. I made all the right noises and she said ; Well, he doesn't seem to be a very interesting baby. He doesn't even smile '. She said this with a real tone of irritation.

Baby was (then)a week old.

I was a bit taken aback. because she has had a child herself and was actually serious.

That water was absolutely the worse thing I could give a sick child. It would be damaging even dangerous for them.

ApolloandDaphne · 02/08/2021 11:33

How strange. A week old baby is never going to smile. Surely she remembers this about her own. Is she happy that she has a grandchild?

BlueLobelia · 02/08/2021 11:37

I know. So odd. From that comment (irritation and annoyance) I am wondering if she IS happy to have a GC. No idea! She never mentioned the forthcoming baby until the very last minute and then only in the context of how it may spoil a family holiday to abroad at Christmas if her DS and DIL did not come. My thought was 'Bet your DIL is on MN in a few months if not already'.

My mum complained that my newborn was always asleep. Well yes they do tend to sleep a lot Confused

Weird to be slagging off a week old baby. Does she dislike her son/ daughter by any chance? 🤔

I guessed it was her son's child rather than her daughter's

She super super proud of her DS and talks about him all the time.

She's actually really lovely and really intelligent, retired Magistrate, does loads of work for charities etc. I found it so odd. Might just have been a bad moment.

Was she maybe just trying to be funny?

BlueLobelia · 02/08/2021 11:43

No, deadly serious. Otherwise I would have laughed. I gaped like a guppy.

A friend made the same complaint about my three-week-old DD. This friend has a young DD of her own, so I was a bit surprised.

Years ago, I was sitting on a train near a pair of grandparents and their two grandchildren, a little girl of about 18 months, and a much older boy.

The grandmother held the little girl on her lap, telling her she couldn’t walk around as the floor was dirty. As the minutes went by, the little girl got increasingly bored and kept grizzling and struggling to get down. The grandparents had brought nothing to distract her, no toys, no books, no snacks or drinks. They didn’t even try to make a game of spotting things out of the train window.

Yet the grandmother kept on saying that she didn’t understand why the toddler was so miserable, how she’d never known her so miserable. In the end, she jokily threatened to throw her out of a window. Angry

I don’t understand how any grandparent could lack have such little understanding of toddlers.

When people who have kids or grandkids say they don’t care about climate change. It’s their future! Idiots, the lot of them.

I was introduced to a woman at work who whilst we were chatting, mentioned she had an 11 year old son. I said oh that's nice, she said not really, I'm sick of him, I only had him for my husband. I get that she was probably having a bad day but I was like Shock

I've met two woman who think like this, both same circumstances, got bullied into having a child they didn't really want, only for the 'father' to up and disappear either before or not long after the birth.

Sorry mine isn’t baby related but vegetarians who won’t eat food if it’s been in the same shopping bag as meat or animal products.

DH is a lifelong vegetarian so no issues with vegetarianism but I really can’t get worked up about packing perfectly sealed veggie burgers in with perfectly sealed chicken burgers.

Luckily he does not expect this but if you eat at my house I seriously cannot guarantee your cucumber wasn’t in a bag with my milk.

Haaaaa, my dad when DD was about three hours old: “Does she ever open her eyes?” First of all, I’ve only just met her to judge. Second of all…

TeapotCollection · 02/08/2021 13:26

I’ve also met a handful of women over the years who were bullied into having children they didn’t really want only for their partner to leave them not long after. Really sad

Although one of them had the cheek to have a proper go at me for being child free…
