I bought something earlier. Instead of the confirmation text I usually receive I got

We are LAPSUS$, remember our name, we have your userdata. we have EE's, BT and Orange source code. If EE pay us 4 millions USD in XMR before the 20th august, we will delete everything from our servers.

I've deleted the bit that looked like a dodgy link. We rang ee and they just said to forward it to ofcom.

Just sounds like a scam, I would ignore.

StealthPolarBear · 01/08/2021 22:29

But it did come from the usual number. And I didn't get my confirmation

The number can be easily faked - send the message from a computer with an ‘identifying’ source number

It could be coincidental spam, linked to the thing you bought, or you have accidentally bought from a fake source

Report the email by forwarding as linked below

support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204759

Check your bank account etc and consider password changes etc

BertieBotts · 01/08/2021 22:38

Number spoofing is incredibly easy to do. It's weird you didn't get a confirmation, if you were expecting one. I don't use iTunes so not sure how it normally works.

Tommika · 01/08/2021 22:39

(((If you have a different device available then you can use that to check the account and change passwords etc in case you have run some dodgy software))))

If you have worries then run some antivirus and anti malware software

StealthPolarBear · 02/08/2021 12:28

Yes sorry I did wonder about number spoofing. But I don't understand hy I've not had a confirmation as I expected, or one for something I bought since.
We pay for this stuff through our ee bill so hopefully low risk.

Hi @StealthPolarBear
would you mind letting me know how soon after you made the purchase did you get that message?
Was it some time after the purchase or when you'd usually expect to get the confirmation message?

StealthPolarBear · 02/08/2021 19:05

Instantly, as I usually would get the confirmation.

You pay for stuff on iTunes through your EE bill?

StealthPolarBear · 02/08/2021 19:12

Yes apparently. I log onto iTunes using the family apple id and that is connected to our ee bill.

Well, you learn something new every day Smile

I’d be tempted to switch it to pay through a credit card if I were you. I suspect you’d be better protected if anything did go wrong.

SuperSecretSquirrels · 02/08/2021 19:16

(Oops - quoted wrong post)

StealthPolarBear · 02/08/2021 19:24

Ooh not sure. I was all set to cancel my credit card until I realised it was this set up. Dh can see what we pay for on ee. For some reason this seems safer. Could be wrong.
If this is a ransom attack thing I'm surprised more people haven't seen it. I've had no more confirmations since, I'd expect to get them.
I'm starting to think maybe I should change my payment method...

OP posts:
TempNameChangexx · 02/08/2021 23:56

I'd suggest calling EE and checking whether the payment went through or not.

They seem to be aware of the issue, judging by this post on the EE Community: community.ee.co.uk/t5/Online-safety/Lapsus-Text/m-p/1067036#M6373

StealthPolarBear · 03/08/2021 08:12

We did, they couldn't have been less interested, just told us to fwd it to ofcom.
Thanks for the link, was hoping to see this had popped up elsewhere.
