What type/tog duvet do I need? Help me please!

I have a 13.5 tog super king size duvet for my king size bed. It is too warm and heavy for the summer so I have been using a 4.5 tog double duvet for the past few weeks. This means DH can't sleep in our bed as there is not enough duvet for us both. I am sleeping like a dream with this duvet as it is so light and feels barely there.

I plan to buy a lighter super king size duvet tomorrow. What do I need? I run very warm but DH is always colder. The one in the spare room is 10.5 tog I think and DH likes that but I wondered if a 7.5 tog might be better.

What do you folks have? I am open to recommendations.

I wouldn't want more than a 4 tog in summer, I switched ours over in May. Winter one is 7 tog but we have a weighted blanket each on top.

kowari · 01/08/2021 17:52

If you have a king size bed then why not just have two singles to suit.

7 tog wouldn't work here in the winter. Our house gets very cold and the Scottish winters can be harsh!

I have 4.5 tog all year round. I run hot and DH is like a radiator at night!

You could always go for two singles so you each have the right tog for you?

RandomMess · 01/08/2021 17:55

We have a single duvet each of different togs.

EastWestWhosBest · 01/08/2021 17:55

I’ve gone to a wool duvet and I don’t need to change it. Toasty warm in the winter and cool enough in the summer.

ApolloandDaphne · 01/08/2021 17:59

Hmm. The two single duvets makes sense but I am reluctant to part with my expensive White Company super king bedding. I need to discuss this with DH.

We have a 4.5 tog, 7.5 tog, 10.5 tog and 13 tog duvet and depending on external temperatures we vary the duvet. But the 13 tog one is rarely used.

I'm in a new build in the south west so even though I only have the heating at 17 and off at night, it holds the heat well.

You already have a winter one anyway, so I'd get single ones in a 4 tog and 7 (or 10) tog for summer.

I've heard there are ones that are different tog each side but I imagine they would cost much more.
RandomMess · 01/08/2021 18:09

Personally I have wool a 3 tog and a 9 tog and spend most of the summer with just a duvet cover!

You could use your super King duvet covers as throws.

Sgtmajormummy · 01/08/2021 18:10

Just safety pin (nappy pin) two singles of different weights and put them in a super king cover.
Singles are 135cm wide and SK are 260. Overlap 10cm and Bob’s your uncle!

PeonyTime · 01/08/2021 18:13

Weve just moved to 1.5tog duvets.
Think I put a 10.5 on in winter, and usually a 4.5 in summer, but weve all been baking.

An alternative to the 2 singles is to have a whatever the warmest person wants as a super king sized, and have an additional single for the person who runs cooler.

Abracadabra12345 · 01/08/2021 18:18

We stayed in a king sized bed in Salzburg and they used two single duvets. I loved it!

Redglitter · 01/08/2021 18:20

I've got a 1 tog duvet for the summer and 4 tog for the winter

countrygirl99 · 01/08/2021 18:25

We have separate duvets. DH has a 10.5 all year round. I have a 4.5 in winter and an empty duvet cover in summer.

RandomMess · 01/08/2021 18:25

Single duvets =

No draft down your back
No getting it whipped off you when your partner wraps themselves up in it as they turn over
No having to cling onto your corner for dear life
No confusion when your DP has rotated the entire thing 180 degrees
No sweltering when they fling it off and you have it folded in half on top of you
Easier to change and wash

I love our single duvets 😆

BackforGood · 01/08/2021 18:35

dh and I have very different body temperatures.

We share a ridiculously too thin / light duvet and then I also have a single one on top, on my side as our way of working round it.

RandomMess · 01/08/2021 18:37

Actually his speciality was rotating it 90 degrees and then stealing my half because he was cold as his feet were sticking out the bottom 🙄

Ooh this could work. I could get a 7.5 tog super king one and if DH finds it too cold he could also have the 4.5 tog one to wrap round him underneath.

We also have two single duvets. A huge improvement over one big one that always ended up wound around DH.

RandomMess · 01/08/2021 18:46

separate rooms or even beds are even better than separate duvets Wink

We have been doing separate rooms over the summer which is the best solution but we are due to have a few sets of visitors over the next few months so DH will have to come back to our bed again!

Urgh how unfortunate!!

iwannascream · 01/08/2021 19:12

You can actually but a duvet that is 7.5 tog and 10.5 tog joined together. I've currently got 13.5tog and 10.5tog in a super kingsize for me and husband its the best thing i've ever bought, no more moaning about being to hot or too cold. Argos have them as do Dunelm ours is a Silent Night
