Any carrot farmers ? 🥕

In the last couple of months I’ve noticed the carrots have changed. They’re tasteless, bright orange and hard.
Does anyone know why, and where can I buy proper carrots ?

your local farm shop?

DinosaurDiana · 01/08/2021 18:07

I buy the organic ones from the supermarket- Asda or Tesco- they are bit more tasty than regular ones.

Ok thanks, I’ll try them. I just wondered if they were GM carrots or something.

I'm a carrot allotmenteer although not a farmer

We picked the last of the over wintered carrots in about March and this season's are just beginning to be ready now. I would guess your tasteless ones have been in cold storage and have gone a bit starchy and tasteless.

It’s just that they’re more pointed than the usual carrots, brighter in colour, and harder. I thought they might be a different ‘make’ of carrot.
I’ll try organic for now, thanks.

DS is carrot mad and eats tons of them and can tell where I have bought them by taste! He swears Aldi carrots are the best!

Crop scientist rather than carrot farmer - if they look that different then yes, they will be a different variety. Not GM, there are lots of different varieties of carrot out there, all bred the old-fashioned way. Try a different shop (i.e. Tesco rather than Sainsbury's, not just a different branch of the same shop) and look hard at the carrots before you buy them to make sure they actually aren't the nasty ones.

Might just be that the supermarket you use has changed supplier.

Thanks. I shall look for darker orange carrots with a rounded end.
