Could anyone advise what smell this is?

Inspired by another thread of mine that triggered a memory.

I had a boyfriend about 7 years ago now and he had a little flat. Inside the flat there was this airing cupboard that he kept towels in.

I can't really describe it but the cupboard (a sort of airing cupboard), smelt amazing. It was like this damp smell that just smelt so good.

Was it damp? Can't think of anywhere I'd be able to go and smell to see if so Grin

A friend had something similar when I was younger that I remember I kept sniffing. I asked her about it and she said it smelt bad Hmm Not eww, just not a pleasant smell

Does anyone know what I was smelling?

Ok. Is it like, the smell of old stone spaces that you get in churches or for example areas of castles? Damp mixed with airy stone but a sort of draughty smell?

I don’t know how to describe it better than that and probably sound mad but I love that.

I would definitely describe it as draughty! That's it!

Not sure about a church smelling like I'm trying to describe? They smell all old to me but that's probably because I've only been inside Catholic ones Grin

Oh yes! My grandparents had a room they kept logs in that smelt wonderful. Damp but woody, in an old stone room. If I smelt it today I'd recognise it immediately.

😂
Only other place I have smelt it is certain areas of a church but not the church in general, usually in the more underground bits! To me it smells really fresh and lovely but I’ve never got anyone else to agree Confused

Do you like the smell of rain on dry warm tarmac too OP? The smell you describe doesn't sound nice to me but I know people that love that tarmac smell and I can't bare it

That was my pregnancy craving in all 3 pregnancies. A smell of damp stone. It drove me absolutely insane because I couldn't recreate it.

Wow. Scary memories.

Both of our airing cupboards have had the same smell. The holes for the pipes going in and out let the smell of the floorboards in. It’s warm, the warm copper pipes smell. The warm water tank. The hot pipes are so close to the wood they make them smell.

Mine too!! It was the only “craving” I had.

ooo our basement in our house used to smell like this! Kind of like the inside wood of a house mixed with concrete/stone and a bit damp - but smelt sweet and really pleasant to me.

Chickenyhead · 01/08/2021 20:08

Me too.

Drove me to distraction. I sniffed everything hunting it out. If I had found a cupboard that smelt like it, I wouldn't have left.

My grandads cellar smelt amazing.. damp, woody and stone.
