Front or back door?

Me and my mate can’t agree on this.
In a house that has the kitchen on the street side and the door at the bottom of the stairs is by the lounge facing the garden - where is the front door???
I think it’s the door facing the street but she maintains that’s the back door because it’s by the kitchen. The door leading out into the garden she says is the front door and I call it the back door because it’s not street facing.
Just wondered what anyone else thought? It’s not important but we agreed I would ask you lot 😁
Luckily she’s sold this house so we won’t confuse each other much longer 😂

Of course the one on the street is, the street side is the front of the house regardless of room layout.

Galassia · 31/07/2021 15:15

Your friend takes drugs.

The font door is the one facing the street or at the side of the house.

The door at the back is a back door.

Livingintheclouds · 31/07/2021 15:16

The street side door, as that is the front of the house and where people would come in. How you designate the use of each room is irrelevant.

Galassia · 31/07/2021 15:16

R ^^

Bluntness100 · 31/07/2021 15:17

Is your friend ok? Front door is the door on the front of the house, and the front of the house faces the street. Its very unusual for someone to not know this.

viques · 31/07/2021 15:19

Where is the letterbox?

urbanbuddha · 31/07/2021 15:23

Where is the letterbox?

Yes, which door does the postman use?

gymbummy · 31/07/2021 15:26

Anyone else been on munsnet long enough to think this was about center parcs....

BlueSurfer · 31/07/2021 15:28

Does the door at the side enter into a hallway? If so, I think that’s the main entrance regardless of the way the house is designed. Surely it’s not normal for houses (unless something like a tiny one bedroom place) to have front doors directly out of/into a kitchen?

FabulouslyFab · 31/07/2021 15:36

@Galassia Your friend take drug 😂😂

It a fab semi with the kitchen on the street side. The street door leads into a vestibule then into the kitchen and that door has the letterbox. I guess the planners built them that way round so that the lounge window has the view of the garden rather than the street. Seems sensible to me - I wish my house was that way round 😀
I’ve not been on long enough to know about Centre Parcs? Can you enlighten me?

Wherever the letter box and house number is, is the front door.

Galassia · 31/07/2021 15:49

This is my understanding of the placement of front and back doors.

If it is positioned in A, B, or C then it is your front door. If it is positioned in D then it is your back door.

Front or back door?
BlueSurfer · 31/07/2021 15:51

I suppose it’s small enough that it doesn’t really matter as it’s down to the occupier which door they prefer to use as their front door.

There are lots of bungalows not that far from me and they are an identical design, but some of them face straight onto the road and others are at angles, so what is the front door for one would face the back garden for another.

BarbaraofSeville · 31/07/2021 15:58

If the door opens in the front garden and faces the street, it is the front garden.

If it opens into the back garden it is the back door.

If it opens at the side of the house, ie A or C in that picture, it is the side door or possibly the back door, but never the front door.

Quite unusual to have the kitchen at the front, but no reason why this is wrong.

mrsdavegrohl · 31/07/2021 17:29

My kitchen is at the front of my house, along with my front door!
My living room overlooks the back garden, and my dining room has the back door, at the back of the house.
I use my back door as my main door but I still recognise its a back door and the front door is the front lol
The front gate opens onto a foot path and has a letterbox and door number.

Bluntness100 · 31/07/2021 17:33

Well my kitchen is at the back, but my front door is very obviously th front of the house, which is also where my letter box is and door knocker.

Pearlywunzel · 31/07/2021 17:37

Our letter box is in our back door, which is really a side door onto the driveway. Our house number is on our front door but it doesn't work to have the letterbox there. DH and I disagree on terminology for the back door.

FabulouslyFab · 31/07/2021 18:23

Lols - fabulous, thank you all!

trumpisagit · 31/07/2021 18:46

We have 2 doors to the front of the house. 1 porch to hallway (front door), other utility room (I call this the side door, DH confusingly calls it the back door).

AfternoonToffee · 31/07/2021 18:47

Are you in the North? If you are then there is a high probability that the street side is the back door. I would agree with her though on the general principle.

CremeEggThief · 31/07/2021 19:12

Where I live, we all use our back door as the main door, and parking is only available at the back. But it's still the back door!

1FootInTheRave · 31/07/2021 19:14

Not the content I expected opening this post Blush

newnortherner111 · 31/07/2021 19:54

@1FootInTheRave neither did I.

Seems a very 'northern' discussion. Next we shall debate what time dinner is, and whether you can watch Loose Women or Coronation Street whilst eating dinner (other tv shows are available)!!!

Which north? I've never heard it described this way round in Yorkshire.
AfternoonToffee · 31/07/2021 20:59

Certainly in many parts of County Durham, and it isn't described as that it really is that. There will be a road at the back and the fronts look into gardens or grassed areas.
