What could I say to the person who dented my car with a trolley?

I have just been to a shop and I came out to find two dents in the side of my car, and a note on the windscreen apologising for hitting it with a trolley. The person has left their name and phone number, which was decent of them, but I'm not sure if it worth contacting them, or what I could say? It's different to if a car hit it and I could go through the insurance, isn't it?

I only got my car back from the garage yesterday and it took a month to repair following a no-fault accident. I'm not having much luck lately!

Thank you for any advice.

Ah that’s annoying.

I think it was decent of them to leave a note - people should but I suspect plenty wouldn’t. I would get a quote to fix the dents, send a polite message thanking them for their details and enclosing the quote and asking how is the best way for them to pay? (Assuming you want to charge them)

I think I would ring and see if it actually is their number and thank them if so but no further action.

Chances are someone else saw them so it and they have left a made up number or even a number for London Zoo!

If I dented a car with a trolley I would leave a note and fully expect the person to get in touch so we could discuss a quote for repair that I would be expecting to pay for. I assume that's why they left their number. I would text them and just say you are the owner of the car then see if they volunteer to pay.

Exactly this. If they've left a note I would hope they were honest enough to have given their actual number and want to pay to repair your car.

Thank you for your replies. I think it is the correct number - I put into WhatsApp and it brings up a family picture. I suppose it could be a random number, but the note was nice and I suspect not.

I'm just not sure what to actually put in a message. I hate talking about money Blush. And would you wait until you have quotes, or get in touch today?

Sorry - I sound a bit useless, but I really lack confidence with this sort of thing. It was so much less personal going through the insurance!

He or she might be nervous about your reaction so maybe get in touch today and say thanks for the note, I’ll get a quote and be in touch?

When I left a note on someone’s car because I pranged it I was terrified they would ring and have a go at me so maybe contact sooner rather than later to acknowledge their note would be good.

Esspee · 31/07/2021 14:22

I would thank them for their note and say I will be getting a quote for the damage.

DishingOutDone · 31/07/2021 14:37

I'd get a quote; maybe its not going to be that expensive?

AlanThePig · 31/07/2021 14:39

We had a mobile dent guy come and remove a few annoying little dents in one of our cars earlier this year. From memory it was about £180 to fix, but one was a in a tricky place.

Ask on your local FB if there is a dent guy and get a quote, he should be able to give it to you from a picture. Then screenshot that and send to the person via WhatsApp.

Agree with others - message today saying

‘Hi, it was my car that you dented today. Thank you very much for leaving the note. I’ll get a couple of quotes for the repair and drop you a line next week. Thanks’

I’d hope you’ll get a message back saying ‘Hi, sorry again, that sounds good’

And then once you’ve got 2 quotes go back with ‘Hi, I got a couple of quotes for the repair, the cheaper one comes in at £xxx - shall I provide bank details or would you rather pay them directly?’

‘

mollycobbles · 31/07/2021 16:57

Thank you all. I sent the message and got a reply saying sorry again and she'd wait to hear from me.
