Counter protector for taps

We have just moved to a new house. It has a beautiful butler silk and wood counter tops. However I am finding the water splashes to the counter tops by the taps. Can we buy something to minimise this? I've tried Google and the best I can find is this but thats kinda ugly I'd like something nicer looking. Any ideas?

The best option I can think of is to paint several coats of yacht varnish on the area around the tap. You can get matte varnishes which look less obvious than the shiny varnish.

though oiling the wood seems main suggestion.

Thank you and yes I willneed to start oiling :) but I have ordered the splash guard too :)
