Have you ever had a terrible hair cut and told the hairdresser you hated it?

If so how did you do it?

I remember years ago getting an awful cut and colour at Toni & Guy - my hair was uneven and dark grey not blonde! And I said it was lovely, paid £159, left and cried 🤣 my boyfriend at the time went in the next day to sort it because I was embarrassed.

I never get my hair done differently now as I think I'd die of embarrassment if I had to tell them I didn't like it!

…and considered getting a new wardrobe of skintight leather pants and tasseled denim jackets to compliment my new look Grin

tale of woe

Had colour for the very first time at a really expensive Toni & Guy salon. A semi-permanent, to colour the few greys that had started to show. I have chestnut colour hair, and wanted as close a match to my natural colour as possible. I didn’t want a different colour, just wanted to cover up the grey. I said from the outset that I was nervous, as I was afraid (for some reason) it would come out with red in it. No, they said, it won’t have red in it. Colour went on, stylist blow dried it. It was bloody red. I was not happy, was told to see how I felt the next day and come back if I wanted it redone. Which I did, they put a blonde colour on it, and it was chestnut again.

Another Toni and guy story here. Had colours and cut. I was so shocked when she thought she had finished I was much more blunt than I normally would be. Told her she surely didn't think it was finished. I looked like a 14 year old goth boy. She tried to hand me the hairbrush to try and fix it myself. Long story short she did manage to sort it out and I was really pleased with the end result and did go back to her for a second time and she did a great job. Third time was again awful. At that point I gave up and found a new salon

I had my hair cut at a salon in my new home town. Nothing dramatic, just a trim at I looked a bit shaggy. It was completely uneven, long bits below the chin which didn't line up etc. I took the scissors to it when I got home and tied it up for six months.

The only decent haircuts I've had in the last 6 years were at the college training spa, but it closed last year. I'm really fed up with shitty hairdressing.

When I was a child, a hairdresser friend of the family used to cut my hair. On one visit, she cut my earlobe (she put a piece of tissue on it and I was good to go).

Cherrysoup · 31/07/2021 12:34

I have very curly hair, like springs. My mum took me to a really nice salon in a department store. The hairdresser was new. She took one look at my hair, started crying and ran away. She was persuaded to return and cut it.

Another time, I was sent to get my hair cut, I wanted a short Bob with layers, I knew this would calm the curl and be easy to style. The hairdresser was so taken with my hair that she refused to chop any off bar the very ends and just put on a shit ton of mousse to hold it in place like a helmet. Horrific.

Taoneusa · 31/07/2021 12:36

I have said “gosh, this doesn’t look nice at all! “ and “this isn’t what I asked you for!”. Didn’t pay, wore a hair band for months…

Roselilly36 · 31/07/2021 12:46

T&G are very hit and miss, had the most wonderful cut & blowdry there once, with a french hairdresser, who did a superb job, when I called to book up again she had left.

I have recently relocated, tried a local hairdresser, awful haircut, sat in the chair with my hair dripping, no towel! Then burnt me twice with the straighteners. Honestly I just wanted to escape. When she asked what I thought, I could not be enthusiastic at all. I think I said yes, tidier! What I should have said its totally shit 🤣 paid & went home.

God about 20 years ago, Rainbow Rooms in Glasgow. Asked for trim, left with short back and sides. Was howling in tears and had to get taxi home. They gave me 20 quid off but it was still over 100. I look back now and would have acted differently, wasn’t confident enough

MuchasSmoochas · 31/07/2021 12:48

And stylist had the cheek to say he knew it wasn’t what I asked for but it looked really nice! 🤦‍♀️

theneverendinglaundry · 31/07/2021 13:01

Twice - and both times I complained and got it fixed. It's embarrassing but not as embarrassing as walking around with a wonky hair cut!

I had similar there, about 20 years ago. From a shoulder-length bob to practically scalped and so many shades of highlight I looked like Mr Cadbury's parrot. I cried in the chair when I realised how bad I looked. It took the best part of two years to grow back.
NeverEnoughJs · 31/07/2021 13:10

Oh, and I was only in to cheer myself up after a rotten break-up.

Dohrehmee · 31/07/2021 14:19

Was given a really thick very short fringe. Was horrified. I was going on holiday as well after that. Had to wear a hairband. Took a whole year for the fringe to grow out.
Other time I went to a well known hairdresser who didn’t wipe the cut hairs from
My face . Was covered in acne . The other time I ask for feathers. She didn’t do them And when blow drying She burnt my bloody scalp. It was so tender. I paid for a tony and guy haircut with the head hairdressers. She kept me waiting. Did a rushed job and when I got got there was a lock of hair which was not even. I had to cut it off

RuleOfCat · 31/07/2021 14:45

There have been two incidents over the years. The first was a chain of salons in mainland Europe, I think based in France. The cut wasn't awful but also was very much not what I'd asked for. I'd have ignored it and chalked it up to experience - but they phoned me the next day to ask if I was happy with the cut, so at that point I said, no not really. So they invited me back to sort it out, which already made me a bit uncomfortable, and once there I was sent to the stylist who'd done the original cut, she was really pissed off and spent a while huffing and saying there was nothing wrong with the cut. Well no, I had only said it wasn't the bob I'd asked for but some sort of complicated layered thing instead. She gave me some 'styling tips' and then I left. Obviously never went back. Later I heard from others that the chain was notorious for having its 'cuts if the season' and were trained to only do those specific cuts, whatever the client asked for. Sadly, I wasn't told that beforehand.
The second incident was a dyeing disaster: I went with about an inch of roots showing and wanted that covered up obviously. When she was finished and had done the blow dry there was still a very noticeable difference between the roots and the rest of the hair. So they offered to do the roots again with a colour match, and the moment it went on my head it started burning - obviously you're not supposed to do two applications back to back. I left, had dodgy roots growing out for months, and have never had a professional dye job again - just do it with henna myself, always works fine. The salon was just incompetent, despite claiming to be 'colour specialists'. Closed a few years later.

Roselilly36 · 31/07/2021 14:45

@Dohrehmee I can empathise if you had seen my fringe, it was so short & severe looking, I looked permanently startled 😱 usually my fringe needs trimming again in a couple of weeks, not this time! Hasn’t needed it since the hairdresser from hell cut it, in the middle of May!

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 31/07/2021 14:51

This is the reason I grew my fringe out. Was sick of the severe and uneven cuts.

I also learned to box dye my hair in lockdown and have to say there was no difference to the £110 colour job I pay for usually!

Nothing too disastrous but I was unhappy with the style a few times when I was younger, not assertive enough to say anything, just slunk out and hoped I didn't see anyone I knew on the way home.

I'm sure hairdressers would prefer you to say something at the time so that they can put it right.

youaresunshine · 31/07/2021 15:47

Had a hair cut where I realised the stylist was short staffed and had a queue of people waiting. I did offer to come back but she insisted as I was booked in first.
Sat in the chair after asking for a wet cut and blow dry. She said since I washed my hair the day before, I didn't need it washed again. I have superfine hair that gets greasy so quickly. She whipped the hair staightners out and proceeded to straighten my wispy, fine hair. I also have a super round face and never wear my hear straight or up as I feel so exposed and self conscious. I was too embarrassed to say anything as I sat there staring at myself in the mirror looking like an egg with a wig on top. It was awful. So obviously, I went and paid only her card machine wasn't working so I paid half in cash and actually went home to get the rest of the money to pay her all whilst wearing this shit hair cut. The worst bit was as I went back to the salon a customer looked at me (I wonder if it looked like I was pushing in or something as I went straight over to the till) looked at the state of my hair and asked me if I going or coming. I threw the money down and left.
Got home and washed my hair and it was longer on one side than the other.

LilyRose88 · 31/07/2021 15:55

My unsatisfactory haircut was from Toni & Guy too. I was very specific about what I wanted and how much I wanted cut off the length. I also said that I didn't want my hair to be straightened with straighteners afterwards. I got a minimal trim with about 0.5 cm off the length and zero styling apart from very enthusiastic use of GHDs which actual fizzled on my hair, producing an alarming smell of burning.

I told the stylist that I wasn't happy with it partway through as he hadn't cut enough off it. He told me that it would look very nice when he had finished it. He did not cut any more off the length or do any styling (thinning or shaping) and when I asked him not to use the GHDs he told me that he had to use them to 'show me the style'!

I complained to the receptionist and manager and they both told me that my hair looked lovely. And then charged me £70 for the privilege of having 0.5 cm cut off my hair and it being straightened to within an inch of its life. Needless to say I have never gone back to Toni & Guy.

SecretWitch · 31/07/2021 16:04

Back in the eighties, I had shoulder length hair and really wanted ringlets. I booked in for a perm. My stylist was really touting the new “ apple pectin perm”. I agreed. Left the salon several hours later and showed my mother. She marched back to the salon and requested a refund. I couldn’t see it but there was a chunk of hair missing in the back. Apparently those apple perms were notorious for burning hair. It took a good year for my hair to grow back. I’v

Ilikechips · 31/07/2021 16:09

Interesting that a lot of the bad stories are from toni and guy salons. The staff are trained in house entirely there!

ForeverSinging · 31/07/2021 16:12

I'd forgotten this but when I was a lot younger I wanted to go blonde and ended up orange. I wasn't a complainer but it looked so bad I just had to speak up. These days I wouldn't hesitate. I went back the next day and a few hours later I was blonde.

thinkingaboutitall · 31/07/2021 16:14

One side of my long bob was longer than the other; the manager evened it out, gave me an olaplex treatment/blow dry for the inconvenience and a 2nd free cut/blowdry for the next time I came in.
