Eating our 10-a-day thread

Breathmiller · 30/07/2021 10:37

I would like to try to start a project of getting my 10-a-day of fruit and veg in every day.

Anyone fancy joining me? I find groups on here of support so useful.

I know lentils and beans and chickpeas are part of it too so I will up them. I'm vegan so I'm hoping that should make things easier as I eat lentils as part of my diet anyway.

This thread is for everyone who would like to focus on 'eating the rainbow' as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Or anyone who does this already who has any hints and tips?

So on day 2 today I’ve had decent (although maybe not full) portions of
Lentils
Tomato
Spinach
Mushroom
Aubergine
Orange
Avocado
Carrot
Corn on the cob
Asparagus
Rocket

As well as a bit of leek, onion, red pepper as ingredients in some soup.
I’m not counting the grapes in my wine Blush

Breathmiller · 12/08/2021 07:56

I think everyone is doing so well. Whether you're hitting ten or more, or just thinking about it more and adding one or two more in every day, you are doing great.

I love it. I don't feel the need to calorie count or deny myself anything. Quite the opposite, it's all about what I can fit in. If I'm hungry I eat, something healthy, nutririous but also delicious. There's just no belly, head or heart space for so much food that's not so good for me. Because my belly is full of lovely fresh fruit and veg. Keep going everyone.

I'm still targeting 30 different veg and fruit each week so I'm not just eating the same 10 things every day.

In addition, next week, I'm going to start having something new each day - for example, by Thursday I might be on 25 different things, but I will actively try to eat one that I haven't yet had that week. Hoping that will increase my total a little further as sometimes I just choose similar items from day to day.

Well done tiredandbored
I am having enough trouble thinking of my 10 a day and making sure theres no wastage. But I would be interested in aiming for 30 different kinds a week.

I am struggling today, not nearly as far on as I would be at this point.

Work is a bit overwhelming, it's not as warm so I want warming foods but no time to cook and the veg I bought is lovely but needs cooking.

On 2 nights recently when Dh was away, I fancied just a massive veg stir fry for dinner. Big pan with lots of cauliflower, broccoli, mushrooms, carrot, cabbage, celery, peppers. Sauce made of 2 tbsp each oyster sauce and water, one of soy sauce. Crushed garlic and chilli and ginger pastes added.
Delish and surprisingly filling.

PyjamaFan · 12/08/2021 17:39

I like the 30 different in a week idea.

Today ..

Strawberries, nectarine and a plum for breakfast.

Soup with onions, celery, carrots, green beans, borlotti beans, lentils - probably 2 - 3 portions in a serving.

Dinner will include rainbow chard, cherry tomatoes and broccoli.

So approximately 9 servings today. Smile

Tiredandbored · 12/08/2021 18:13

Today:

  1. Sultanas
  2. Lettuce
  3. Rocket
  4. Mangetout
  5. Red pepper
  6. Tomato
  7. Beetroot
  8. Blackberries/raspberries
  9. Strawberries

If I'm hungry later I'll have either a banana or some mango as number 10.

Tiredandbored · 12/08/2021 18:17

Currently on 28 so far this week.

@Breathmiller I keep a little list of veg and fruit in my notes on my phone and just tick them off as the week goes on. It is slightly easier as we've a big family, so I can buy bags of fruit knowing they'll get used up even if I only eat one or two, but most of mine is from large salads at lunchtime and adding extra veg to evening meals.

It definitely has helped me to be motivated to get a wider range than my usuals which is good.

RhonaRed · 12/08/2021 19:47

It's a great time of year for fresh stuff.
I had a Greek salad today and the tomatoes that had been sitting on the windowsill were so good.

Today's tally was 6:

Yoghurt with apple, blueberries, date, raisins: 1 serving fruit
Greek salad: 2
Chili leftovers with extra beans, avocado, cucumber: 2
Tinned pears with the final few redcurrants from the garden as a garnish: 1
We do a larder check in August! Really nice and I remember why I keep them in. We should have eaten them last winter but I didn't like to use up tins in case we'd had to isolate!

PartTimeDomesticGoddess · 12/08/2021 21:39

I agree that it's a great time of year for fresh stuff. I've been getting veg boxes again, sometimes organic, sometimes local(ish), depending on what is in each. The organic ones do taste good, but crikey the extra dirt to wash off feels like extra work. Having said that, the runner beans, rainbow carrots and courgette that I had for dinner were amazing

Yesterday was another cricket day, but better planned than the last one and came in at 8

Blueberries
Apple
Dates
Tomato
Beetroot
Cucumber
Cauliflower Bol salad pot (2, according to the label)

Today has been
Blueberries
Raspberries
Apple
Roasted cauliflower/butternut soup (quite thick so I'm counting as 2)
Runner beans
Aubergine
Broccoli (roasted until crispy with chilli)
Rainbow carrots (roasted with cumin)
Courgette (roasted with chilli)

PartTimeDomesticGoddess · 12/08/2021 21:48

@Breathmiller I love roasted aubergine, especially now that I roast them whole. For dinner tonight DH and DD15 had salmon for dinner, DD18 and I had a roasted aubergine between us topped with yogurt, rose harrisa and sesame seeds (based on the recipe below) Lush

I started with this one

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/roast-aubergines-yogurt-harissa/amp

The one that I had topped was this one. The herbs/flavours need beefing up for my palate, but it's a good starting point

Wildernesstips · 12/08/2021 22:03

B: Watermelon, toast, small glass of carrot & orange juice -1.5
L: Poached egg and spinach on toast, tomatoes, apple - 2.5
D: Cod with beer, bacon and Savoy cabbage and onion -1.5

So 5.5 but literally can’t squeeze any more in today.

Breathmiller · 12/08/2021 22:15

Thanks parttime I'll definitely check these out. I love harissa.

Well after a near teary meltdown to DH earlier (nearly). Tired, overwhelmed with extra work, house stuff, extended family stuff and some other health stuff going on I then had to go out again to work til 9. One of the things I was bleating about was how i wouldn't reach my 10 today because I had no time to cook and it makes me feel so much better.

Well, I came home to the most delicious plate of food.
Braised sweetheart cabbage with fresh fennel and chilli. Roasted veg, caramelised roast carrots and a cauliflower and leek bake. . It was all so delicious. Just veg flavoured with more fresh veg and herbs. So after a tricky start to the day...

Lunch

  1. Avocado/lemon
  2. Dates
  3. Beans
  4. Raisins
Dinner
  1. Cabbage
  2. Fennel
  3. Cauliflower
  4. Red Pepper
  5. Onion
10. Carrot 11. Beetroot 12. Leek

He's a keeper.

Breathmiller · 12/08/2021 22:18

And very well done everyone else.

I definitely need to get onto soup. Throughout autumn and winter I always have home made soup on the go. It's time to get the soup on the go. And houmous, i need to have a constant supply of homemade houmous.

Will join in tomorrow 👏🍒🍓🍇🍎🍉🍑🍊🌱🍆🥒🥔🌶🌶🌽🥕🥦🍅🥗🧅

PartTimeDomesticGoddess · 12/08/2021 23:02

@Breathmiller wow, that sounds delicious. I love my DH dearly but he'd rather put up a shelf than cook 🙄😂

It's been a few years now but relative to our 19 year marriage it's a new venture that he has taken on with gusto. He barely used to cook, now he is never happier when cooking meals for everyone. He makes his own bread, experiments with new recipes and cooks most days for us all. He's become like some New York Jewish mother who just wants to feed everyone. It's lush.

I have a what'sapp group with my older kids and I often share recipes on there with them. They think it's a magic chat as often I put a recipe up because i think they would like it and a couple of hours later it appears in a photo because he's made it. Tis magic indeed.

Well i wasn't sure how I'd make it today as I didn't eat all day. Not great I know but i didn't get a minute.

And when I got home I would normally hit the crisps and chocolate. But, I had h/m houmous with carrots and celery instead and it felt so much better. And olives.

I did have a handful of crisps too but not the family size bag (and the rest) that I'd usually have. They were nice but to be honest i prefered the carrots with the houmous

So today i made it to...

  1. Olives
  2. Corn
  3. Carrots
  4. Houmous
  5. Celery
  6. Plums
  7. Onion
  8. Raspberries
  9. Mango

I have some cherries or baked tomatoes if I fancy a snack later but I'm pretty full so I won't force it if don't want to.

OP posts:
RhonaRed · 13/08/2021 23:39

Breathmiller that's a good result!

I made it to at least 7 with:

Melon 1+
Tomatoes, lettuce, cannellini beans and olives: 2
Carrot sticks 1
Onion, mushroom, courgette, cannellini beans baked together: 1+ serving
Broccolli 1
Pak choi 1

Wildernesstips · 14/08/2021 07:13

So 6 portions yesterday:
Watermelon, fruit juice
Hummus, carrot, apple
Savoy cabbage

Breathmiller · 14/08/2021 07:44

Well done RhonaRed and Wilderness

Here's some inspiration for today.
🍉🍌🍆🫒🍅🌽🥦🫑🥒🥕

Reading everyone else's really helps as does having this thread to hold me accountable. When i got home from work yesterday the thought of having to come on and say I'd made none spurred me on. And I don't have my usual Saturday morning crisp hangover. But i don't feel i missed out either. I still had ice cream, i just had raspberries with it. I still had some crisps which i enjoyed but I filled up first on carrots and celery and olives and houmous. Much better.

PartTimeDomesticGoddess · 14/08/2021 10:52

@Breathmiller how lovely (having him get into cooking like that!) And great result yesterday 😊

We ate out last night, massively over ordered but took our leftovers home with us. That meant I didn't feel bad about not eating huge amounts there and could spread it over 2 meals (smaller portion at 11:30 before bed 😂) which suited me much better
It's harder to pack the veg in when eating out, but I think I still managed 8

Raspberries
Nectarine
Dates
Cherry tomatoes
Bol Mediterranean roasted veg salad pot (2 portions)
At least 2 portions across dinner (stir fry veg, tofu curry and stir fry)

Breathmiller · 14/08/2021 20:29

Well, I'm not sure what I've had portion size today. I did have a thai takeaway tonight though that had loads of veg. But i doubt much was a full portion. So the list is about the different kinds of veg rather than full portions.

  1. Apple
  2. Cauliflower
  3. Sweet potato
  4. Aubergine
  5. Baby corn
  6. Onion
  7. Broccoli
  8. Sweetcorn
OP posts:
TheNarwhalBalloon · 14/08/2021 22:19

I've been eating badly so really made an effort today and managed
Strawberries
Grapes
Spinach
Tomatoes
Puy lentils
Beetroot
Apple
Carrots
Sugar Snaps
Peppers
Broccoli
Sweetcorn
Peas
Satsuma!
Hadn't actually realised it was so many until I wrote that. It wasn't a full portion of each type but I feel fairly confident I got to 10 portions quantity wise.

RhonaRed · 14/08/2021 22:20

Raisins, dates 1
Hummus, beetroot, tomatoes, lettuce 2
Peach 1
Onions, mushroom, carrot, peppers 2
Courgette 1
Pak choi 1

I went out for lunch and felt I had to go for salad.😄 The challenge is working, though not up to managing 10.

Well done Breathmiller. I feel better for the additions to my diet too.
I finished my jar of olives last night (with my fermented grape juice😉) I usually forget the last few but I'm definitely focussed on my veg this week!
